Fashion scandals, like the industry, go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Here's a look at some of our favorite from the past decade, like Sarah Palin's RNC-sponsored shopping spree, Miley Cyrus' scandalous Vanity Fair shoot (so much back!), and Michelle Obama's right to bare arms.

Oh, I know you love a good scandal. How do I know this? Because everyone does. A good scandal amuses us, indulges our schadenfreude and distracts us from other more ‘real’ and depressing news stories. And as someone who studies trends and fashion news all day long, I can tell you the fashion world has some good ones. So as the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, I decided to make a list of my top 10 favorite fashion-related scandals. I’ve included any story involving clothes or relating to the fashion industry. Many of these stories were ridiculous, but they got the headlines and we couldn’t get enough of them. And the decade’s not even over — we’ve got a few more weeks to discover this decade’s own ‘blue dress’!

But in the meantime, we’ve got Naomi, Kate, Miley, Martha, Bjork, Michelle and more….

                                   ************************

Former Johnny Depp lover, actress and general bad-ass Winona Ryder shocked the world when she was arrested for shoplifting in December 2001. Ryder was caught on the security cameras swiping over $5,000 worth of loot from Saks in Beverly Hills. Ryder then had the book thrown at her with probation, community service, drug counseling, fines and restitution. She then dyed her hair blonde and stared in an Adam Sandler movie. Now she’s Spock’s mom. Pretty decent comeback.

Naomi Campbell may have been one of the hottest supermodels of the 90s, but the in Aughts she began to reveal her ugly side. First Campbell was sued in 2000 for allegedly beating an assistant. Then again in 2003 for throwing a phone at another assistant. Finally in 2006 she got slapped with a felony charge for throwing yet another (Swarovski crystal-encrusted) phone, this time at her housekeeper’s head. She eventually plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge, was forced to clean the subway where she A) wore stiletto boots and B) still looked amazing.

Speaking of 90s super models, Kate Moss, the iconic poster child for 1990s heroin chic look, found herself at the center of a scandal involving a different controlled substance. In 2005 British tabloid the Daily Mirror published photos of Moss snorting cocaine accompanied by the massive headline “Cocaine Kate”, thus getting her dropped from multiple ad campaigns. However, because she is a supermodel and not, say, a kindergarten teacher, the whole cocaine-party-girl thing didn’t really hurt her image and she quickly bounced back, signing on a Dior campaign and landing the cover of W in November 2005. However, Moss created something of a mini-scandal a week ago when she was quoted in Women’s Wear Daily saying “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” Hilarious, Kate. Obnoxious and untrue, but hilarious.

What could be better for the slowpoke day-before-Thanksgiving than a glittering White House State Dinner, with its photos to page through (Michelle Obama’s looks like a beautiful Oscar! Desiree Rogers is in Commes Des Garcons!) and its guest list to parse (where was Richard Holbrooke? Chris Dodd made the cut but Harry Reid didn’t? Hey! I forgot all about M. Night Shymalan!)

It is a perfect story for a slow day, with tidbits like the menu (Prawns! Red lentil soup! Arugula!) and the fashion (Michelle Obama’s dress was made by designer Naeem Khan — and seriously? Desiree Rogers FTW!). The arrivals video from C-SPAN is sort of awkwardly mesmerizing — its actually sort of fun to watch the impromptu interactions that occur (Melody Barnes looks as happy as if she’s going to the prom, and as lovely, too; by contrast, David Geffen and his boyfriend Jeremy Lingvall looked a little stiff, especially coming after a joke-cracking Brian Williams).

Glynnis MacNicol has a thorough round-up of the festivities culled from the Twitter stream of her fave, CBS’ Mark Knoller); he did not, however, mention the preponderance of boring black at the dinner. Watching the arrivals on C-SPAN I was struck by how much more exciting and glamorous it is to wear color (Valerie Jarrett in bleh black was a disappointment). Standouts were Michelle Fenty, wife of D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty; Bhavna Shyamalan and her stunning hair; Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm; U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, who wore black but with a fabulous and interesting neckline, plus a colorful wrap and Katie Couric, respelendent in blue-purple. Actually blue was the hue last night, come to think of it — other standouts included Alfre Woodard and Jane Williams, wife of Brian, both smashing in rich color. Below, our pick of the best photos (and outfits!) from the night. Alas, couldn’t find a picture of Hillary Clinton. I bet she wore color.
