The most important thing in both cases is to stay in contact with the people you love. If you are being abused, those are the people who can help you. If an elder in your life is abused, your frequent contact will enable you to notice if something’s amiss.

The other thing Abrams pointed out was that there’s no difference between elder abuse and just abuse. It’s all a crime. However, there are differences in the types of abuse in these situations. There’s physical abuse which may be easier to report, and financial which may be more difficult as, Abrams explained, you have to prove who “had authorization to spend money.

Abrams finished by saying that, if people really think there is abuse of any kind occurring, they should certainly think about reporting it to the police but make sure to “arm yourself with the facts.”
