Mike Huckabee weighed in on a debate over a church allowing Muslims to worship at their facilities, and his comments have drawn criticism from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights group. In a statement released Monday, the Council suggested that Huckabee do more research into Islam, calling his comment not only insensitive, but inaccurate as well.

The debate continues over a small church allowing Muslims to worship in their building while a nearby mosque was under construction. On Fox News today, Steve Stone, Pastor at the church explained why he thought the decision was right, while Dr. Alex McFarland echoed the recent sentiments of Mike Huckabee that such a seemingly kind gesture is, in their opinion, a horribly unchristian action.

Devout Christian Mike Huckabee is having a hard time understanding the concept of charity. The former Arkansas governor and potential 2012 hopeful visited Fox and Friends to discuss a small church that had allowed Muslims to worship when mosques in the area proved too small or were under construction, something he considered shocking and the beginning of a slippery slope: “Should the church be rented out to show adult movies on the weekend?”

There was some unrest on Real Time with Bill Maher tonight – both among the panelists and in the audience. Maher and guest Tavis Smiley couldn’t agree on the relative treatment of women in Muslim countries and America, leading to some spirited debate and some strong attacks on Muslim countries from Maher. That is, until one audience member interrupted the show with a shouting rant before getting kicked out.

The violent sexual assault CBS correspondent Lara Logan sustained while covering celebrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square led many to wonder about the safety of journalists – particularly female reporters – as they cover tense situations in foreign countries.

ABC News correspondent Ashleigh Banfield addresses those concerns head-on in a column she penned for The New York Post, telling concerned readers that sexual violence against female reporters are a “sad little secret”… that may not be so secret after all.

Two years into the Obama presidency, the issue of where he was born and what religion he follows somehow continues to be an issue for many on the far right, and now House Speaker John Boehner is coming under fire for telling NBC’s David Gregory that it’s “not my job” to dispel those rumors. Bill O’Reilly dedicated his regular panel with Juan Williams and Mary Katharine Ham tonight to the matter, railing passionately about why giving the matter airtime was destructive.

Bill O’Reilly is not exactly the biggest ally A-list do-gooders like George Clooney and Angelina Jolie can count on to support their work abroad. But while usually skeptical, O’Reilly found himself defending their cause in the Darfur region of Sudan as his guest, former CIA intelligence officer Michael Scheuer, accused them of helping Osama Bin Laden‘s cause.

Republican Representative Peter King, the soon-to-be Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, appeared on Fox News Channel with host Jamie Colby and discussed his plans to hold hearings on the “radicalization” of Muslim Americans.

A Reddit user has posted a pretty amazing picture which he or she has entitled, simply, “Hatred.” The picture is of a truck which boasts, not one, but 18 of the most offensive, anti-Muslim bumper stickers you’re gonna see. Clearly calling Muslims “disgusting maggots” makes this driver feel like a tough guy. However, he’s driving a Ford F-150 and, as Howie Long, manliest man ever will tell you, that means he’s a total girlie man.

And the world’s most exciting semantics and mathematic debate continues! The argument over Glenn Beck’s assertion that 10% of Muslims were terrorists had gotten a new participant this weekend when Fareed Zakaria pointed out that, by Beck’s own definition, he would be a terrorist himself. Today, Beck responded with his own extension of logic that by pointing out that, by Zakaria’s definition, were Beck to vocally advocate the CNN host’s violent death, he “wouldn’t be in trouble.” Whoa. This argument took a hard left turn at some point.

Fareed Zakaria, who occasionally throws fairly well-disguised bombs from his perches at CNN and Time in a manner so serene many fail to notice– is taking on his cable news stylistic opposite, Glenn Beck– or at the very least, his math skills. In his trademark soothing tones, Zakaria gave Beck a math lesson on those 10%, or 157 million, “Muslim terrorists” Beck claimed were plotting to attack America– namely, that that figure is “1000% wrong.”

On his radio show today, Glenn Beck was lamenting the fact that no media outlets (Fox News included!) were covering the growing scourge of Communists and Socialists preaching a violent overthrow here in America. He even proposed that 0.5% of Americans may be violent radicals. Of course, that figure isn’t something you’re likely to hear about since it was handily overshadowed by another stat the host used: Beck guessed that 10% of Muslims are terrorists. You hear that sound? That’s 100% of The View hosts angrily leaving the room. Yeah, even Hasselbeck.

Bill O’Reilly is not letting the issue of Muslim go, even if it cost him Joy Behar‘s company on The View. O’Reilly invited Ahmed Rehab of the Council on American-Islamic Relations on the program earlier tonight for a lively debate in which he accused Rehab of dodging his question on whether Iran is a threat to America, Ahmed alleged the same thing about his Iranian question, and it didn’t get much more conciliatory from there.

Last week, a number of newspapers, including the Washington Post, decided not to run Sunday’s Non Sequitur comic. The cartoon featured a parody of the the popular Where’s Waldo? series of children’s books with the caption “Picture book title voted least likely to ever find a publisher…” followed by a drawing of a charming park scene and the answer/punchline: “Where’s Muhammad?” Andrew Alexander, the Post’s Omsbudsman, has now written a letter stating the paper’s editors were wrong for removing the cartoon.

Indoctrination alert! The superintendant of Wellesley Middle School has apologized to parents after a video of a field trip to a Islamic cultural center has surfaced. During the field trip, which was part of a Social Studies unit on different faiths and cultures, a group of sixth grade boys were videotaped joining in with some men in prayer. Americans for Peace and Tolerance (a tolerant group that has an Islamic “Terror Map” on their website) passed out fliers with pictures of the video and an uproar quickly followed.

Though The New Republic is a magazine that generally leans left-of-center, its Editor-in-Chief, Martin Peretz, doesn’t always agree with the generally liberal New York Times. On September 4, Peretz wrote a blog post that questioned a Times editorial, which had expressed dismay at many Americans’ “sadly wary misunderstanding of Muslim-Americans.”

Hey, remember that meme from the past few weeks that Conservatives and Fox News were stoking anti-Muslim sentiment by harping on that whole Mosque thing? Well, don’t worry about it! That’s right, Bill O’Reilly’s Culture Warriors were on the case to explain how that whole thing was completely overblown because, guess what? Americans hate Jews more!

Ok, what’s more depressing? The fact that, in the year 2010, a group of Muslims (ie. practitioners of the second largest religion in the world) have to film a video where they seriously and without irony promise not to take over the country or the fact that the video succeeds in making them seem less like terrorists but accidentally makes them look like the aliens from the remake of V. Seriously, if any Fox News personalities start filing reports that Muslims like to hide in their space ships and eat gerbils, I’m going to lose my mind.

Please let August end! It’s like a bizarre parallel universe, a Bermuda Triangle of months, where non-stories dominate the headlines, flight attendants become national heroes, and the most progressive view on our president’s religion comes from…Fox & Friends? Whaaa?

For most people following the strange, seemingly endless tale of mutual offense that is the Park 51 Islamic community center debate, it always appeared that the main debate was one of sensitivity– whether Americans were being sensitive enough to moderate Muslims in being hostile to them because others attack America in Islam’s name. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was surprised today by an out-of-left-field birther question from a Fox News reporter. Despite what this sounds like, Fox News’ Wendell Goler was following up a question about the White House’s take on racial profiling with an interesting notion: have the birthers made Muslim-American outreach awkward for President Obama?

“We have to use profiling. And I mean be very serious and harsh about the profiling,” said retired Lt. General Tom McInerney of the U.S. Air Force, suggesting that the United States adopt the profiling guidelines of Israel in order to protect ourselves from an airline attack. “If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched,” he said. If we don’t do that, we’re going to lose an airliner, he explained.
