Nancy Grace And Dan Abrams Spar Over Casey Anthony Pregnancy Rumors

On Thursday, HLN host Nancy Grace joined ABC legal analyst and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams on Good Morning America to discuss — and disagree on — the pregnancy rumors floated by Casey Anthony‘s defense. Namely, the idea that her own dad, George Anthony, had fathered Caylee Anthony.

At one point in the segment, Abrams noted that Anthony’s defense team planned and presented a defense that was “sort of consistent” with what Anthony had been saying.

“Dan,” cried Grace, “you are putting perfume on the pig! What the defense did was, they look at all their choices and they picked the defense that suited them. Because, again, let me reiterate if you two men didn’t hear me, by my own count — and I don’t know the half of it — there are thirteen stories as to who Caylee’s father could be. And now she’s trying to pin it on George yet again? What more does that man have to go through?”

Abrams attempted to shift the focus away from pregnancy rumors and onto Anthony’s theories about her father’s role in her daughter’s death, when Grace interjected that the pregnancy rumors are indeed important because “that was the crux of the case”…. even though “it may not be important to you.”

Nancy Grace Angrily Cuts Mic Of Joran van der Sloot Friend: ‘Take Him Off The Screen!’

In a contentious interview, HLN’s Nancy Grace cut off the mic of Joran van der Sloot friend John Ludwick after he blamed Sloot’s victim for her murder. “You are saying that the murder victim who endured a brutal beating a super human strangulation where her neck bone was crushed, the room covered in blood, her clothes ripped off of her postmortem and left that way to be found, it’s her fault?!” Grace exclaimed incredulously. “Sir, you know what, cut his mic, John Ludwick, I reserve this for very very few people, but you sir, are a fool. And what you have said sets victims rights back, hmmm, maybe a couple hundred years, take him off the screen, I don’t wanna look at him anymore!”

Ludwick had earlier defended van der Sloot, saying he didn’t deserve the death penalty and that it was a crime of passion.

“She put herself in the situation Nancy!” Ludwick argued. “As soon as she found out who he was, she should have left, she shouldn’t have started an argument and fighting with him, and being in an isolated area…If I was a woman and I was in her situation I surely wouldn’t have stood around to ask him that question, I would have got out of there.”

Watch Nancy Grace Freak Out Over Mere Mention Of Casey Anthony’s Lawyers

Nancy Grace was in a particularly spirited Casey Anthony tizzy during her show last night on HLN, after passionately disputing that new “Tot Mom” videos were leaked to the internet as a result of hacking. “Whoa stop, Trisha! You just hurt my ear! That’s what her lawyer said!?” Grace exclaimed. “Her lawyers also said George Anthony molested her and Lee Anthony molested her. Remember that!? They also said the baby died in the swimming pool and that George Anthony, a former cop, went and threw the body in a pet cemetery out in the woods to decompose. Yeah, they said that too. So what do I care what they said? Why are you telling me that?”

Grace humorously made a pained expression as a legal correspondent stood by as the HLN anchor continued her over-the-top shtick. Eventually, the segment moved on, but not before hitting Anthony again because she failed to file a police report that her computer was allegedly hacked.

A day after the Casey Anthony video diary clip leaked on YouTube, featuring a blonde, glasses-wearing Anthony talking about her new adopted dog, among other things, there is still a question about whether the video was actually “leaked,” or if Anthony and her team strategically released it in a cleverly orchestrated move to get some attention.

Nancy Grace and Dan Abrams appeared on Good Morning America Friday morning, and sparred over the origins of the video.

Grace, who famously railed against Anthony during her trial last year, immediately went for the jugular, saying that she’s not buying the “leak,” defense.

“Everything they or their client has said regarding this matter has been a big lie,” Grace shouted. “According to my count, she mentioned herself 48 times! In my mind, this is a calculated move to stir up interest in herself.”

Abrams, the founder of Mediaite, agreed that Anthony is “radioactive,” but added that, “it doesn’t mean people won’t go to her like they want to watch a car wreck.”

Grace countered by saying “of course” she leaked it for monetary gain, pointing out that Anthony had mentioned audio recordings that she made earlier. “What?” Grace asked. “For a book? Who’s going to buy that?” When Abrams tried to make a point, Grace asked him if he noticed how she was all done up for the video. “Come on, Dan!” Grace implored. “You had to notice the low-cut shirt!”

Kathy Griffin Tells Anderson Cooper She Will Be ‘Recreating Nancy Grace’s Nip Slip’ On New Year’s Eve

Tomorrow marks the fifth anniversary of the first New Year’s Eve in which Anderson Cooper courageously accepted co-hosting CNN’s last broadcast of the year with unpredictable comedienne Kathy Griffin, and she has yet to disappoint in the ways she inspires, as Cooper put it, “dread” in her co-host. Tonight she appeared on Anderson Cooper 360º to discuss tomorrow’s ceremonies, and promised various stages of undress– and possibly a drive-by disturbance of Paul Begala.

Griffin slipped easily into her role of annoying or ridiculing Cooper lighthearted, starting by pointing out that he has an “overly giant font” on his Blackberry, like a grandmother would. After a few Ryan Seacrest jabs, Cooper politely asked how worried he should be about Griffin. “You should be very worried,” she advised, and out of the blue asked what Paul Begala was up to for New Year’s. Cooper didn’t know, but offered that they could call him on air.

Griffin also gave away one of her big “unveils” for tomorrow: “we will be recreating Nancy Grace‘s nip slip… I will be showing one full breast because it’s nature and it’s beautiful.” Cooper tried to move past this shocking revelation to questions about Grace and her HLN colleague Jane Velez-Mitchell, but the threat still stands.

The Mediaite Muppet Show: Media Figures And Their Muppet Equivalents

Back when Mediaite was still in its infancy, when all the writers you know and love were adorable baby versions of themselves being cared for by a mysterious, sock-wearing woman named Nanny, a tradition was formed. Whenever the holidays would roll around, the Mediaite brain trust would choose the big pop cultural event of the year and find all the media counterparts for the various characters. At the time, back in the sepia-toned days of 2009, that cultural event was Harry Potter. Well, now it’s 2011, and Potter-mania is all wrapped up thanks to that shock twist ending in the last film that revealed the whole story was taking place (SPOILERS!) inside Sirius Black’s snow globe. That means we need a new fictional world and, if you’ve gone anywhere near a television in the past few months, the choice is clear.

Unfortunately, that clear choice (characters from Ken Burns’ prohibition documentary) was shot down by our editors, so we’re moving on to our second choice; The Muppets!

So gather round, pull your favorite chicken or pig close, and make sure all your Wakka’s are Wakked, because it’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time to meet the Muppets on Muppet Mediaite!

Morning Joe Wonders Where Have All The Conservative Intellectuals Gone?

The title question makes for a bad Paula Cole record, but a good basis for discussion on this morning’s Morning Joe. Co-host Mika Brzezinski led a discussion of the current GOP presidential field’s frequent brain power outages, such as Herman Cain‘s Libya whiff and Rick Perry‘s debate mega-stumble, pegged to op-eds by The Washington Post‘s Kathleen Parker and Newsweek‘s Paul Begala.

As tempting as it is to respond to that query with the obvious answer (they’re drinking Tranya somewhere with Sasquatch and Batboy), Begala has a point. Back in my day, Republicans were the boring ones, who could put you to sleep like human Allegra pills with policy mumbo-jumbo and philosophical gibberish. Now, as both Begala and Parker point out, the conservative ecosystem produces a bumper crop of dumbed-down candidates who wilt under the slightest intellectual glare.

Begala sees Republican anti-intellectualism as a means to sell economic elitism “By wrapping it in populist anti-intellectualism. Let’s teach those Harvard pointy-heads a lesson: cut taxes for billionaires!”

Parker tied her critiques of Perry and Cain to the rise of Sarah Palin, aptly comparing the pair’s attempts at damage control to Palin’s famous winking. She sums up her column by saying, “A funny line is worth a laugh, a song may buy you lunch, but in the end, there’s no winking one’s way to the White House.”

The dumbing down of the Republican Party long predates Sarah Palin (some would argue that she dumbed herself down to fit the vogue), though. While there were lesser milestones to the endumbening of politics in general (the Nixon-Kennedy debate, the rise of Ronald Reagan), the 2000 election drew a bright line between conservatism and intellectualism. Abetted by the mainstream media, conservatives attacked Democrat Al Gore for being an “intellectual elite,” and asked voters to elect the guy they’d rather have a beer with.

Aside from being a conscious strategy, I think this phenomenon was the natural result of conservatism’s regressive trajectory. Conservatism used to be about providing a check on progress, about moving forward, but with extreme, often painful caution. Sometime during the 90s, though, even that slow progress achieved a critical mass that created a conservative panic, and made them go from a lower gear of progress into gunning it in reverse.

Even though Gore won that election, which was later awarded to George W. Bush, conservatives decided the strategy had worked, and continued the attack against John Kerry in 2004. By 2008, intellect had become a full-blown liability for then-Sen. Barack Obama, and while it’s easy to blame conservatives for this, none of this could ever have succeeded without the mainstream media’s enthusiastic participation.

The Morning Joe panel touched on some of this, but midway through the clip, made a decent observation while off on a tangent about Mika checking her tweets during the show. Mike Barnicle observed, “Ten years ago, you would think about a person — you’d think about an issue, you’d think about whatever it is you were thinking about. And now people tweet it. Instead of thinking.”

Without a doubt, the shrinking of the news cycle, along with the national attention span, has contributed greatly to the lowering of the common denominator, but just as it rewards politicians and media figures who cater to that microscopic attention span, so, too, does the audience reward that lack of substance. As part of a staff that works hard to provide smart reporting and commentary on politics and the media, it can be frustrating when all of that hard work is eclipsed, many times over, by a Nancy Grace nip slip. Maybe America is getting the anti-intellectual culture it deserves.

Early Thursday morning, Mediaite founder Dan Abrams appeared on Good Morning America, alongside Nancy Grace, to discuss the Conrad Murray verdict. At the very end of their segment, Abrams went off-topic and congratulated Grace on her Dancing With The Stars success, mentioning her now-famous cartwheel. As the show went to break, Grace told Abrams to unbutton his shirt, because he was going to do one.

Back from commercial and the local weather update, the duo broke from a slow dance in the middle of Times Square. Grace pulled off a textbook cartwheel. Abrams then went for it. He had a nice run-up, did an unnecessarily small jump, then…. did something. This may have been the first cartwheel Abrams has ever attempted, and if you listen closely after, as Grace consoles him and the GMA crew openly mock the attempt, it almost sounds like he said he’d never done one before. Rick Perry tweeted that he was embarrassed for him. Law students everywhere began practicing cartwheels in case they, someday, become legal analysts and are forced to do one on national television after being goaded by a fellow legal analyst.

This Happened: Nancy Grace Performs A Cartwheel On DWTS

“What is the best thing in the world?” you are likely asking, chin resting on hand. Cake? Puppies? A cake in the shape of a puppy? A puppy in the shape of a cake? The answer is “No, wrong, none of those things!” Because the best thing in the world is Nancy Grace doing a cartwheel in a swishy gold dress on Dancing with the Stars. I mean. Right? Obvious answer.

So here is Nancy Grace, a woman who is a good dancer. She is such a good dancer that we should all focus on how good her dance moves are and how pretty that swishy gold dress is and not worry about whether this or that or the other was flashed on national television. She is putting the “grace” in “Nancy Grace,” so stop it.

Just enjoy all the dancing, and how good it is.

Dan and Nancy Show Continues: Abrams Mocks Grace For Saying It’s A Crime To Inject Dead Body

Closing arguments began this week in the Conrad Murray case, and Good Morning America brought together their legal “Dream Team” to assess the situation. Mediaite founder Dan Abrams and HLN’s Nancy Grace butted heads in their analysis of the case. “Nobody’s on trial because it’s not a crime to be awake. It’s a crime to be dead by having propofol shot into your dead body until all of your organs are saturated with a powerful, surgical anesthetic that is not to be used outside the operating room. Those guys didn’t know what they were talking about!” exclaimed Grace. “It’s actually not a crime to be putting drugs into a dead body,” Abrams snarkily rebutted. “But if you put it in a live body, that is a crime.”

“Good grief!” Grace shot back.

Abrams went on to argue that that the prosecution’s closing argument was a bit stronger than the defense. “I think the defense was smart to bring up this idea of if it wasn’t Michael Jackson, we might not be here today.” Abrams observed. “The problem with the way they did it was, I think the constant reference, for example, to ‘this not a reality show’, was a bit condescending to the jury. Like they don’t know they’re there for a trial and they need to be reminded it isn’t a reality show, I think is dangerous water for the defense.”

Grace agreed with Abrams’ analysis. “I was offended by suggesting that a homicide trial is somehow akin to a reality show,” Grace said. “One thing for the defense is, that they really didn’t have a lot to work with because their big theory is that Michael Jackson self-administered propofol. Come on! The syringe by the bed is a 10cc. When you give children Benadryl, they get 5mls. There’s no way that if Jackson had shot himself up with 10ccs, that all of his organs — he was saturated with propofol — you’re not getting that out of one syringe. It’s not going to happen.”

GMA anchor George Stephanopoulos asked if the case would have gotten the traction it did if it involved anyone besides Michael Jackson.

Abrams pointed out a person being overdosed on propofol by their private physician is the sort of thing that would really only happen to a celebrity. “The propofol shouldn’t have been in the room, period,” he added.

“Four gallons, Dan!” Grace interjected. “Four gallons. Think of a gallon of milk. Four gallons of propofol! And he told the jury, ‘I’m trying to wean him?’ Okay.”

Friday Ratings: MSNBC Beats FOX At 9 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m. (In Demo)

Friday nights are always a little weird — MSNBC shows prison documentaries, and plenty of 25-54 year-olds are out from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., doing 25 to 54 year-old things. But Friday night had a few other elements in the mix — Monica Crowley was guest-hosting for Sean Hannity at 9:00, while On The Record ran a special on the economy at 10:00. The result? An unorthodox night of numbers, with FOX taking the first four time slots and MSNBC taking the final three (FOX, it must be noted, ruled primetime overall, continuing its dominance).

Some observations from Friday:

Rachel Maddow won the 9 p.m. slot by an estimated 3,000 viewers in the demo against Crowley (193,000 to 190,000). Piers Morgan, who finished third, with 174,000, just missed doubling up Dr. Drew, who landed in fourth with 74,000.

FOX actually finished third in the demo at 10 p.m., with the On The Record special finishing behind MSNBC Investigates and an Anderson Cooper re-run. Cooper’s first run at 8 p.m. was good for second place in the time slot, well ahead of Ed Schultz, but still far behind Bill O’Reilly.

Joy Behar pulled in a miserable 47,000 viewers in the demo at 10 p.m.

John King (at 6 p.m.) and Chris Matthews (at 5 p.m.) were the only two shows to finish behind any of the HLN shows all night. In fact, Crowley’s guest-hosting spin on Hannity at 9:00 beat Dr. Drew, Behar, and Showbiz Tonight‘s numbers…combined.

Monday Ratings: Nancy Grace Dances Her Way To Second Place at 8 p.m.

When MSNBC decided to move Lawrence O’Donnell to 10 p.m. and put Ed Schultz in his time slot, they had to be hoping for better results than a third-place finish at 8 p.m., especially on his debut night. But Schultz’s first appearance at 8:00 was merely the side story to Nancy Grace‘s second-place finish in the time slot (for viewers in the 25-54 year-old demo); Grace beat Schultz, 208,000 viewers to 201,000.

While FOX continued to dominate, MSNBC — despite the Schultz slippage — finished ahead of CNN in every time slot. And the night’s only show, on any network, to dip below the 100,000 viewer threshold in the 25-54 demo was the 11 p.m. repeat of Erin Burnett, which pulled in 74,000 viewers in the demo. Dr. Drew came perilously close to joining the club, with 102,000 at 9 p.m.

Some other nuggets from Monday’s numbers:

Greta Van Susteren finished first at 10 p.m., although she had the lowest first-run numbers of the night on FOX (an O’Reilly repeat was the lowest). Lawrence O’Donnell finished in second in his first night at 10:00, comfortably beating an Anderson Cooper repeat and a Joy Behar first-run. In fact, O’Donnell was closer to Van Susteren’s numbers than he was to Cooper’s or Behar’s.

Chris Matthews and Schultz both topped Rachel Maddow‘s numbers on the MSNBC slate.

Piers Morgan‘s first run at 9 p.m. and Cooper’s 10 p.m. repeat were the only CNN shows to not finish in fourth place in their time slots in the 25-54 demo.

HLN scored three second-place finishes in the 25-54 demo.

Friday’s Ratings: Lawrence O’Donnell Bids Adieu To 8 p.m. Time Slot By Finishing Second

While FOX continued to pounce all comers in the ratings, it was MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell who made for the most intriguing storyline: Friday marked his last show at 8 p.m. (he’s being swapped with Ed Schultz and starts broadcasting at 10 p.m. tonight), and he went out with a bang, finishing in second place behind Bill O’Reilly in the time slot, (among adults, 25-54). Even more impressive, especially for those not interested in demos, was that O’Donnell was the only non-FOX show to attract over one million total viewers. He had the most total viewers of any show on MSNBC on Friday night.

Some other fun facts from Friday:

Greta Van Susteren had a strong night, grabbing more 25-54 viewers than Brett Baier managed earlier on the FOX schedule.

Dr. Drew and Joy Behar couldn’t manage to break six digits in the demo, as both finished with under 85,000 viewers. Showbiz Tonight, however, almost doubled its Behar (73,000) lead-in, snagging 135,000 in the 25-54 demo. In more Fun With Behar Numbers, Van Susteren nearly quintupled her in the demo.

Erin Burnett and John King both finished fourth in their original time slots. Burnett, Baier, and Behar all alliteratively finished last on their networks in the demo.

If you were looking for Ed Schultz on Friday night, so you could gently weep against the television screen during his last 10 p.m. show, you were out of luck. MSNBC aired two Lockdown episodes. The first, at 10 p.m., was the lowest-rated on the station in the demo all night. The second, at 11 p.m., ended up being the highest-rated show on the station in the demo on Friday night.

Perils Of Live TV: Impassioned DWTS Fan Drops F-Bomb While Hijacking Remote CNN Shot

Live TV is always kind of a gamble, particularly because it offers people a platform to promote their intense feelings for Dancing with the Stars and/or David Arquette. Seriously, you simply never know when someone is going to interrupt a live broadcast to sing the praises of America’s favorite Arquette, not including Patricia, Rosanna or Alexis.

And that’s exactly what happened Monday afternoon when CNN sent Maggie Lake out to the streets of Manhattan to report on the release of a new biography on Apple’s Steve Jobs.

Lake’s report was interrupted by a man unafraid to pursue the issues really rocking America today: Namely, how David Arquette rocks so much harder than Nancy Grace. His use of obscenities after being pulled off screen only served to further his completely valid point.

Update: As some of our commenters pointed out, the show-stealing man in the footage is from Howard Stern’s show. Does that make his argument any less persuasive? Of course not.

You can say this about Nancy Grace: she seems to really be enjoying her time on Dancing With The Stars. And she’s using her official YouTube channel to show what ABC’s cameras aren’t capturing — progress reports on that week’s dances and impromptu moments with her makeup team. This week, DWTS had an 80′s theme, and Grace, going down Memory Lane, revealed that she was a high school cheerleader back in Georgia. She even whipped out a cheer to prove it.

After surviving the cut and going back to work, someone pressed Grace for an encore. And she obliged. Right there in the CNN lobby:

Wednesday’s Cable Ratings: Erin Burnett Making Ground With Viewers Aged 25-54

A day after having a Republican debate thrown into the mix, normalcy returned, somewhat, to the cable news ratings, with CNN falling back on its pre-debate numbers and FOX regaining a stranglehold on the top spot. There was, however, some notable movement buried in the ratings.

For instance:

Erin Burnett seemed to hold on to some of that younger crowd she discovered as the debate lead-in. She had been mostly occupying third place — with the occasional jump into second over Chris Matthews — in the 7 p.m. time slot (won handily by Shepard Smith, who did lose a few viewers from Tuesday night), but she scored a solid victory in the 25-54 year old age range on Wednesday. Matthews still beat Burnett with the overall viewers, but Burnett, who was broadcasting live in a rowdy Vegas outdoor setting on Tuesday, might be connecting with the specific demo.

John King doubled his 25-54 numbers, going from 73,000 on Tuesday to 148,000 on Wednesday, beating Al Sharpton — which doesn’t happen very often — for second place in the 6 p.m. slot. Again, Sharpton won the head-to-head overall viewer battle, but CNN took second in the 25-54 demo. CNN and MSNBC fans shouldn’t do the happy dance just yet; FOX’s Brett Baier still crushed both of them, outpacing their combined total numbers by about 800,000 viewers.

Lawrence O’Donnell, who MSNBC is moving from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, beat Anderson Cooper at 8 p.m. by 361,000 viewers. Ed Schultz, the man taking O’Donnell’s place, only beat Cooper’s repeat by 190,000 two hours later. This could all be attributed to people still used to watching Cooper at 10 (he only got bumped up to 8 this summer). And Schultz did outpace O’Donnell with the 25-54 crowd.

Nancy Grace Dances Her Way To The Next Round of DWTS, Thanks Fans On YouTube

Nancy Grace and her partner, Tristan MacManus, advanced to the next round of Dancing With The Stars on Tuesday, sealing their spot in the Final Eight and avoiding elimination. After the voting was announced, Nancy and Tristan took to Nancy’s personal YouTube account to thank fans for their support:

Although the Grace-MacManus duo have the third-lowest average score among the remaining couples (their 19.75 weekly average is a full five points lower than Ricki Lake‘s 24.75, which is the highest), Grace must be given credit for learning, practicing, and performing the dances while also covering Dr. Conrad Murray‘s trial in Los Angeles. On a far different level, she must also be given credit for avoiding a wardrobe malfunction for two straight weeks…and counting.

How ubiquitous is Grace in Los Angeles right now? Jimmy Kimmel Live sent a field reporter out to the courthouse where Dr. Murray is being tried, and he kept telling In Session’s Beth Karas — who he was purposefully mistaking as Grace — how much he loved her on Dancing With The Stars.

Casey! Amanda! Conrad! How (And Why) Salacious Trials Clawed Their Way Back Into The News Cycle

Remember Court TV and the national obsession with high profile trials? For about a decade from O.J. Simpson to Scott Peterson and Natalee Holloway the country seemed to have an insatiable appetite for soap opera like details that slowly and painstakingly emerged day in and day out in courtrooms and from investigations around the country. Courthouses regularly became tent cities with media encampments at high profile trials. Some judges and lawyers (and witnesses ie. Kato Kaelin) became more recognizable than most movie stars. Sometimes, the cases addressed important issues like in the trial of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy Mcveigh or assisted suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian or most obviously, Bush v. Gore. Others were far more frivolous like Anna Nicole Smith‘s lawsuit or a random celebrity drunk driving or drug case. Multiple daily cable news shows hosted by the likes of Geraldo Rivera, Greta Van Susteren, Nancy Grace (and me) covered the minutiae with analysis and debate from lawyers and participants.

But then something miraculous and unexpected occurred. At the end of the last decade, the media and public seemed to move on. With it, Geraldo went weekly, Greta went into covering politics and Court T.V. folded into a reality network. It seemed the high profile trial had gone the way of the newspaper: still relevant but hardly the media mainstay it once was.

So what happened? How did the trials of Casey Anthony, Amanda Knox and Conrad Murray capture the nation’s attention like it was 1999? Was it that the country simply became far more fascinated with politics in the Obama era? Maybe, but that hardly explains the depth of the shift. No, I think it is possible that reality shows became an artificial sweetener for those seeking a trial sugar rush. The transformation of Court T.V. To TruTv and its host of outrageous reality shows says it all. Following real lives at hyper speed was far more interesting and time efficient than often arduous and technical trials. From MTV’s Real World to Survivor, The Apprentice to The Bachelor, the public could follow what seemed like real lives and conflicts with verdicts as to their future rendered in far fewer episodes. Reality junkies could discuss and debate whether the latest contestant being eliminated was fair and just. While reality shows continue to thrive, they seem to be evolving with often staged contests giving way to (more) real ones involving dancing, singing or “performing.” The public may simply be tiring of the faux reality shows (although I can’t really explain the continuing success of the Kardashians). “Real” reality could be the new black, explaining why trials are back in vogue.

Sure the fact that a number of recent trials have been televised is a factor and yes Nancy Grace has never stopped her legal verbal dancing (in addition to her more recent actual ones). But something is in the air and in between far more important events like the Arab summer, the economy, jobs and the wars abroad, the resurgence of trials is nothing to fear. Much to the chagrin of many, you can argue it is even a good thing and not just for my work as a legal analyst. For all the moaning about the media’s coverage of high profile trials, its a lot better than reality shows, the public learns about how our third branch of government works and when it doesn’t, and it’s far less destructive to our democracy than the media’s horserace and scandal driven, political coverage.

So welcome back Court TV, you may not be with us, but your spirit lives on.

In Wake Of Nancy Grace’s Nipplegate, Joy Behar Shows Us How To Avoid A Nip Slip

On her HLN show, host Joy Behar commented on colleague and Dancing With The Stars contestant Nancy Grace‘s recent “nipplegate.” To some, it appeared that Grace’s areola unleashed itself on an unsuspecting public while she danced, although Grace insists she was wearing pasties at the time. “To me, it looked like a Frisbee,” confided Behar.

Behar then reached into her top and pulled out what she referred to as a “Sassy Nip” — essentially a pastie for covering one’s nipples should one be unable or unwilling to don a brassiere. Probably no need to use one if your nipples are more morose or apathetic than sassy, we guess.

On Monday night, the world was shocked, shocked when, after all the hand-wringing over Chaz Bono’s fiendish insistence on existing, it actually seemed that HLN’s Nancy Grace was the one to plunge our nation’s children into depravity. The worst depravity of all in fact, the depravity of a briefly viewed human female breast! However, Grace has spoken out, denying that that slightly different shade of pink that we saw for a second was actually her nipple.

Thank God. I guess my children won’t be going to Hell after all.

Here’s what she told the good folks at TMZ:

“‘When I got dressed, I was wearing Petals (nipple covers) and an industrial strength bra … my dancing dress also had a bra sewn into it.’

Nancy adds, ‘I have been judged guilty without a trial … I will go to my grave denying the nip slip.’”

Judged guilty without a trial! I’m appalled! That’s not the way America’s supposed to work. Here in America, people are supposed to get a trial. Then they’re supposed to be judged guilty anyway no matter what.

Right, Nancy?

Jon Stewart Blasts Fox & Friends For Insufficient Nancy Grace Nipple Coverage

On last night’s Dancing with the Stars, legal analyst Nancy Grace shocked America with half a second of breast exposure. Given the precarious moral nature of this season of DWTS to some conservatives given the presence of Chaz Bono there, Jon Stewart posited tonight that the biggest story of the day would get major coverage on Fox News, where the transgendered contestant was called dangerous to children by resident Dr. Keith Ablow. Needless to say, after the initial shock of being exposed to Nancy Grace, Stewart had some stern words for the Fox & Friends crew.

After a quick reiteration of the controversy surrounding the premiere of this DWTS season, Stewart exposed his audience (within FCC guidelines) to the greatest lost battle Nancy Grace’s dress is sure to have encountered. “Why is the angry lady from Court TV trying to breastfeed my children?!” he asked in mock indignity. “After weeks of freaking out because of Chaz Bono,” Stewart noted, “suddenly it’s Nancy Grace who has her nipples all over America’s children.”

Expecting the platform that gave Dr. Ablow’s views the most coverage to react with similar protective rage, Stewart was sorely disappointed, as it received little more than a chuckle. He didn’t let the distinct treatment go unnoticed.

Wardrobe Malfunction! Nancy Grace Lets A Nipple Slip During DWTS Performance (NSFW)

Since its premiere last week, opponents of this season’s Dancing with the Stars have claimed that the images broadcast therein could corrupt and severely traumatize children. All the griping around Chaz Bono seemed to leave the Dancing with the Stars unprepared for the real threat: Nancy Grace‘s breasts, escaping the shackles of her dress after a fairly energetic performance.

After trotting around the dance floor for her weekly performance, a fairly flustered Grace appeared on screen for about half a second falling out of her dress– by the time the camera comes back, she is hiding her face in horror while the host turns and comforts her: “on the European version, that would be perfectly fine.” No word on whether the FCC will go all Janet Jackson on ABC for submitting their audience to less than a full second of a legal commentator’s exposed bosom; however, the news was important enough to interrupt Michael Moore‘s thoughts on the Tea Party over on Piers Morgan Tonight.

Nancy Grace Shimmies Out Of A Desk In Dancing With The Stars Debut

Tonight’s premiere of Dancing with the Stars brought with it several surprising names, perhaps none moreso (in a confusing way) than HLN legal maven Nancy Grace. Grace kicked off her run on the program with a cha-cha that began with Grace sliding out of a desk in a glittery white gown and making plenty of conservative, albeit difficult to follow, steps around her partner.

For those expecting Grace to tangle up her feet and fall face-first after a particularly ambitious twirl, she certainly didn’t deliver. In fact, despite all the awkward attempts not to step over toes or remember the choreography, it wasn’t half bad! Truth is, we’ve seen far worse debuts on the program, with far less flattering moves and costumes. It was far from good, but it was also far from terrible, and the judges seemed taken aback at how happy Grace seemed with her entire routine.

Nancy Grace And Dan Abrams Argue Over Bob Ward Murder Trial: ‘Women Do Not Shoot Themselves In The Face!’

Mediaite founder and ABC News legal analysts Dan Abrams and HLN’s Nancy Grace went head-to-head this morning on Good Morning America, debating the Bob Ward murder trial taking place in Orlando. In a 911 call, Ward admitted to shooting his wife, but later backtracked, saying she killed herself while he tried to take the gun away from her.

Grace was suspicious of Ward’s defense that he came to his wife’s rescue. “I find it very interesting that he was trying to save her — what was she doing in her bedroom with a fully loaded Smith & Wesson revolver?” Grace asked incredulously. “I’m not buying into that. Also, take a look at his demeanor immediately afterward. While his wife is still lying there between the bed, shot in face, he’s on the phone very matter-of-factly saying, ‘Oh yeah, Diane’s dead.’ It’s very rare to hear a longtime love speak so coldly of a murder victim. I find that very unusual.”

“The reason she would have a fully-loaded gun, according to the defense, would be to kill herself,” explained Abrams. “That would be the reason for the first time she would’ve ever had a gun in that room.”

Grace was quick to point out that, historically in suicide cases, women don’t shoot themselves in the face. “Dan, have you ever looked at statistics of suicide-homicide? You will hardly ever find a woman shoot herself in the face. It just doesn’t happen, Dan!”

Abrams reminded Grace that this was not ruled permissible evidence by the judge.

“I know that, I know the judge said no, but I’m telling you that the jury doesn’t know that, we’re not in court, Dan, we’re talking about the truth,” Grace emphasized. “Women do not shoot themselves in the face!”

“Yeah, no. It’s not just that they don’t shoot themselves in the face, they don’t shoot themselves from 18 inches away. That’s the bigger point here,” Abrams said. “The heart of the defense is going to be that she was in the process of trying to kill herself and he somehow stopped her. It’s going to be a tough defense, but I think it’s going to be a reasonable doubt defense. This is going to be similar to the Casey Anthony case.”

“Yeah, he stopped her alright. She’s dead!” Grace exclaimed sarcastically. “He didn’t stop her.”

“Well, ‘he tried to stop her’ is going to be the defense, right?” countered Abrams.

Anchor Robin Roberts brought up footage of Ward joking around and dancing and asked how that would factor in the case.

Grace thought this was a damning piece of video, but Abrams disagreed. “I don’t think it’s going to be a make or break issue.” He added that the case was going to come down to what evidence the jury had to go on, but the big difference between this and the Casey Anthony case was that this one was starting from a taped confession.

How Would Chris Matthews And Sean Hannity Fare On ‘Dancing With The Stars’?

This is obviously not your typical media post. While I personally don’t care for TV shows about dancing, the idea of cable news hosts, known best for their political coverage, participating on such a show is an interesting spectacle to behold. It falls in that pantheon of “wait, what?” TV moments like Larry King rolling with Snoop Dogg or Glenn Beck engaging in some awkward sexual banter with Rick Santorum. It is a class of television all its own.

A few weeks ago, the new Dancing with the Stars cast was announced, and while Chaz Bono‘s inclusion has been the subject of the biggest feedback, another surprising inclusion was none other than HLN’s senior Casey Anthony correspondent Nancy Grace.

Grace’s inclusion in the competition made The Hill writer Judy Kurtz wonder how other cable news pundits would fare on the show. And apparently, Chris Matthews boasts of his “serviceable Philly Dog.” For those of you unfamiliar with this dance move, here’s a brief description:

“Take the basic position of the Boston Monkey. Bob and weave your head and move your hips in a groovin’ manner.”

Sounds simple enough, right? But unfortunately for a few dozen people, Matthews currently has no plans to participate on the show.

What about Wolf Blitzer? This is the man who did the Dougie at the Soul Train Awards, he’s got cred! In fact, in an interview this week, when Blitzer was asked about his proudest moment, this is what he had to say:

“I was at the BET Soul Train Awards last year and did the Dougie. I’m friendly with Paxton Baker [President of BET Event Productions.] I grew up in Buffalo watching ‘Soul Train.’ He invited me to come. I got so much street cred doing that! I had to accept Eminem’s award on his behalf. That was a moment!”

Respect.

Greta Van Susteren was also asked about going on the show, but suggested a fellow Fox News personality as a better participant.

“Sean Hannity really, really wants to and I would never try to steal his thunder.”

Dancing Sean Hannity? I could see that. Those Freedom Concerts of his are pretty lively.

Again, watching people dance on TV doesn’t sound particularly entertaining. But if there was a dance-off between MSNBC and Fox News, if Rachel Maddow and Megyn Kelly went head-to-head on the dance floor, if Al Sharpton does his best James Brown impersonation while Bret Baier boogies to “Rapper’s Delight” once again, I only have one thing to say.

Report: Michael Jackson’s Doctor, Conrad Murray, Wants ‘Protection’ From Nancy Grace

TMZ reports the legal team defending Michael Jackson‘s doctor, Conrad Murray, have asked a judge to sequester the jury in the doctor’s manslaughter trial, arguing sequestration is the only way to protect Murray from “character assassination” at the hands of cable news analysts expected to cover the trial–in particular, they HLN’s Nancy Grace. “According to the (documents filed), the networks, and in particular Nancy Grace, were well aware of the ratings boost from the (Casey Anthony) trial, and Grace and others engaged in ‘nonstop on-air abuse of not only the defendant, but the jurors and defense attorneys involved.’”

The trial, which TMZ quotes the Murray defense team as expecting “will be the most publicized in history,” is likely to be covered extensively by HLN, which devoted most of its evening schedule to coverage of the Casey Anthony trial.

Dr. Murray was Jackson’s personal physician at the time of the singer’s death from overdose of a powerful sedative in 2009. The manslaughter trial is expected to begin in September.

Piers Morgan Wades Through Nancy Grace’s ‘Tot Mom’ Outrage Storm In Fiery Interview

In case anyone were wondering, Nancy Grace is still angry. The fact that Casey Anthony is now a free woman seems to have lit an even brighter fire under Grace as she visited Piers Morgan tonight for an interview. Repeating that she was “let down” by the verdict, Grace took offence to Morgan suggesting she made the case “her own” and shot back at other lawyers who had spoken to Morgan and considered the verdict reasonable: “your experts are wrong.”

Morgan managed to keep the tenor of the interview fairly low for the first part of the chat, opening by asking Grace to explain how the verdict made her feel. “Knowing that Tot Mom is free leaves me… a feeling of being let down,” she said, adding that the entire ordeal was “deeply upsetting to me” as she had witnessed “a miscarriage of justice in a system that we hold so dear.”

It didn’t take long to make her angry, however, as she snapped at Morgan for what appeared to be a fairly innocuous comment: that she had had a “fantastic run” with the case and had “made it your own.” “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” she began shouting, “I didn’t make anything my own. This is Caylee’s story.” She explained the process through which she and her production crew cull through the thousands of cases going on in the nation today– going through about 70-80 a day– and confirmed that this case particularly spoke to her. “It is every parent in America’s case– as a warning.”

Morgan then shifted gears to Grace’s faith in the jury system. “90% of the legal experts I’ve had on, when I pushed them… all said there was not enough hard evidence [to convict],” Morgan noted (through a bit of resistance). Grace replied that she believed in the system but also acknowledge that humans comprised it and humans made mistakes. That said, “I would be willing to suggest that your experts are wrong.” The reason the jury could not reasonably find doubt, Grace continued, was that the core excuse for not finding her guilty was the lack of, as Morgan put it, “hard” evidence. “Under our law,” however, “circumstantial evidence is deemed equal,” as in many cases, “you don’t have eyewitnesses to a crime.” To not deem the circumstantial evidence equal to hard evidence, Grace concluded, was the equivalent of giving Anthony a “gold star” for doing a good job of disposing of the body. “Why should Tot Mom get a benefit because the child was so decomposed?”

Dan Abrams: Nancy Grace Fans Are Going To Give Casey Anthony A Hard Time Wherever She Goes

ABC legal analyst and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams teamed back up with HLN’s Nancy Grace to discuss Casey Anthony‘s release from prison.

Abrams, for one, thinks speculation that Anthony will be able to profit off her notoriety with a reality show and book deals and the like is discounting “how much anger there is against Casey Anthony.” If she’s going to make money off her case, he guesses, it won’t be with a major organization or company but, rather, with one on the fringe.

A rather subdued, almost melancholic Grace then offered her reaction to Anthony’s new freedom:

Well, mostly, disappointment. Disappointment in our justice system and I think that that is the general sentiment. No one wishes for vigilante justice; nobody advocates that. People who are opposed to the jury verdict, that think it was wrong, are really seeking justice, and I do not believe those people are interested in harming Tot Mom Casey Anthony.

And as far as her getting deals? They’re already coming in. In an interview with José Baez, he’s already fielding offers, one for up to one million dollars. So, they are going to come in and it’s just, like, porn. Nobody says in church on Sunday morning they’re going to watch it, but they do. So somebody’s gonna watch that interview and somebody’s gonna buy that book and somebody’s gonna make a lot of money. End of story.

Abrams then compared the Anthony case to another high-profile, televised case with a verdict many in the public found generally dissatisfying, if not outright wrong: O.J. Simpson’s. The difference between the two, noted Abrams, is that Simpson went into and through the case having numerous fans from his days as a professional athlete, whereas as Anthony has never been a beloved celebrity.

Now that she is a famous person, there’s little doubt that the public and the media will be clamoring to see her when and if she honors her subpoena to appear in court to face a lawsuit waged against her by the nanny she accused of taking her daughter.

Abrams then brought up an interesting point:

There are too many people out there who love Nancy Grace, who watch Nancy Grace on a regular basis, who are going to see her out there somewhere and are going to give her a very, very hard time wherever she goes.

Nancy Grace On Casey Anthony: ‘Somewhere Along The Way There’ll Be Another Crime’

The image of a liberated Casey Anthony leaving the prison that has for years housed her must have been extremely jarring for those that followed the case closely and had no doubt of her guilt. Needless to say, it was difficult to watch for Nancy Grace. Grace appeared on Good Morning America today to react to the midnight release, and aside from questions as to who is funding Anthony’s getaway, she noted weighing heavily on her was a “disappointment in our justice system.”

Grace told host Dan Harris that she was “still stunned” by the fact that Anthony had been released, and felt a “disbelief and a disappointment in our justice system” that she expected to share with those who thought similarly to her. That’s not to say that Grace had lost the faith in America– “while we all love it,” she clarified, “it hurts and it’s disappointing to see a miscarriage of justice.” Of critics who argue that Grace’s continued coverage of the case is occurring way beyond its welcome time, Grace ceded they were entirely correct. “It was due process; she was acquitted,” she said, adding that “the public will now be the judge if Casey makes money off of Caylee’s murder.”

Harris then asked whether she was concerned that she had incited violence against Anthony by “some people in your camp,” which brought out Grace’s indignation. “First of all,” she air-quoted, “I don’t have a ‘camp,’” but that it was her and “thousands of people that agree” who are “in the camp of justice.” That said, she said she believed “anyone who believes in justice does not believe in vigilantism,” and she expected “no private action against Tot Mom.” She then mused a bit as to where she had gone and who was paying for it, noting that Anthony’s private flight cost “a pretty penny.”

Grace concluded her segment confirming that she believes Anthony will get in trouble with the law yet again. “You are what you are,” she noted, arguing that counseling is often futile and Anthony had participated in so much immoral behavior that “I believe somewhere along the way there will be another crime.”
