There were big parties this weekend in Bunawan in the southern Philippines. Following a three-week hunt for the thing, villagers were relieved to see a 20-foot, one-ton saltwater crocodile hoisted by crane from a creek and tied onto a truck to be taken far, far away. According to the AP, wildlife officials think it might be the biggest crocodile to ever be caught, and more frightening yet, that it might have an even bigger mate still lurking nearby.

With the Egyptian revolt that is slowly but surely toppling president Hosni Mubarak nearing its end, some in the media are beginning to evaluate the big picture of what this hopefully near-complete historical event means, and how it ranks near similar occasions. Rachel Maddow attempted to describe the magnitude of the revolts as a “Brokaw moment,” and took the opportunity to look back at the similarly dramatic falls of some of history’s sturdiest regimes.

Now, this is legitimately unnerving. In the Philippines, Councilman Reynaldo Dagsa was taking a photograph of his family on New Years when he was shot dead. However, when the family looked at the photo later, they realized the politician had caught his own murderer in the act. Police later used the picture to arrest the men involved.

Perhaps you have already read the article in the New York Times World section today about the enormous amount of violence in the Philippines that seems to be caused by karaoke renditions of Frank Sinatra‘s “My Way.” Things have apparently gotten so bad that the Filipino media records the crimes under the subcategory of “My Way Killings.” But the reporter on this story, Norimitsu Onishi, is notable himself, consistently getting American audiences interested in Asian news.
