If you've been following the news media over the past two weeks, then you know the big stories inside and out: an Alaskan woman wrote a book and some elected officials are working on making new laws. Or so we've heard. But the effects of these stories have a reach that extends well into the media world, even tickling the Mediaite Power Grid, leading to a little bit of rearrangement. Inside, find out how Meghan McCain, Andrew Sullivan and others fared.

If you’ve been following the news media over the past two weeks, then you know the big stories inside and out: an Alaskan woman wrote a book and some elected officials are working on making new laws. Or so we’ve heard.

You’ve seen endless consideration given to Sarah Palin‘s Going Rogue and heard debates about health care lasting well into the weekend (even at nighttime!), and if you have spent any time at all on this very site, then you’ve seen tons of analysis of that very concentrated news coverage. To be frank, it’s all very exhausting. But the effects of these stories have a reach that extends well into the media world, even tickling the Mediaite Power Grid, leading to a little bit of rearrangement.

The passage of the health care reform bill in the House of Representatives and the beginnings of debate in the Senate have proven to be huge stories for MSNBC’s Kelly O’Donnell in the TV Reporter category, as she launched from #54 to #6, trailing the football-fueled Erin Andrews by only one spot, as she hopped from #13 to #5. The Congressional news has also provided a boon for the Washington Post‘s Dana Milbank who inched from #3 to #2 among Print/Online Reporters on the strength and prevalence of his D.C. coverage.

National news also aided Fox News’ Major Garrett as he moved from #24 to #10 among TV Reporters on the buzz of his interview with President Obama. Elsewhere, Malcolm Gladwell‘s latest book release — a collection of his New Yorker articles — took him from #5 to #3 among the Print/Online Columnists, bad reviews be damned.

And then there’s Sarah Palin and Going Rogue – never a dull moment there. Newsweek‘s Jon Meacham held on to his #1 among Magazine Editors, keeping away from constant Power Grid rival Anna Wintour of Vogue. Let’s just say the controversial Runner’s World Palin cover might have played a role, keeping Meacham’s name all over your news. Certified Palin-hater and baby-questioner Andrew Sullivan also experienced a bump, moving from #6 to #4 among TV Pundits, not too far in front of Meghan McCain, who jumped from #40 to #12, and has never been shy about Palin in politics, never shying from the I-am-woman angle.

It’s getting to the point where you have to ask yourself: Will these stories ever die? We’ll find out next week here on the Power Grid.

Last week, Jake Tapper's potential facial hair (and high profile interviews) made him a big gain on the Power Grid -- all the way up to the #2 spot. Then, he spoke out about the government's campaign against Fox News and he came out ahead. Plus: Erin Andrews and Ann Coulter!

Last week, Jake Tapper‘s potential facial hair (and high profile interviews) made him a big gain on the Power Grid — all the way up to the #2 spot behind MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. Poised to strike, Tapper made the most of an increased profile this week, challenging White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and the White House’s attack on Fox News.

Tapper was quick to show public solidarity with his fellow network, asking Gibbs pointedly, “I’m not talking about their opinion programming or issues you have with certain reports. I’m talking about saying thousands of individuals who work for a media organization, do not work for a ‘news organization’ – why is that appropriate for the White House to say?” His news-making gall was enough to take the #1 spot among TV Reporters while Mitchell fell four spots to #5.

With buzz for The September Issue finally dying down, and layoffs sweeping Condé Nast, Anna Wintour was unseated this week at #1 among Magazine Editors by Jon Meacham, whose Newsweek is enjoying a burst of rejuvenation after it took a different editorial direction this summer.

Elsewhere, eternal Power Grid mover and shaker, ESPN’s Erin Andrews, made another power play, moving from the #21 slot all the way up to #4 among TV Reporters. Andrews has been in and out of the news with her nude video scandal and subsequent lawsuit and that has done well for her Power Grid standings, with her blog and news buzz holding steady. Her stalker’s first date in court is this week.

Ann Coulter went from #8 right to #3 among TV Pundits this week, on the heels of her always controversial television appearances (this week on Fox News) including this stop by Joy Behar‘s show. Elsewhere among pundits, Andrew Sullivan continued his climb, moving from #7 to #5, and aided by some noticeable blog buzz doubtlessly aided by his day job as a blogger for the Atlantic. Sullivan also sits at #16 among Online Editors.

NBC’s Jim Bell moved from #3 to #1 among TV Executives, while a re-run for Saturday Night Live and a lag in momentum since the beginning of the season sent Lorne Michaels falling from #2 to #5. We’ll see how he bounces back when the show returns with Taylor Swift as host on November 7th.

In our weekly recap of movement in the Power Grid, we run down all of the big shifts and their current event causes. This week, we weigh White House Correspondent Jake Tapper's facial hair, Sumner Redstone's financial woes and People magazine's huge photo exclusive to see how they affected our leader board.

When you’re a television reporter, you make news any way you can — then, you see how it affects your Power Grid ranking. ABC White House Correspondent Jake Tapper has a friendly rivalry with his NBC contemporary Chuck Todd, and in the heat of the baseball playoffs facial hair is on the line. That’s right — two of the most important TV journalists have made a bet: “Jake wagered Chuck that if the Philadelphia Phillies win the National League Championship, Todd must shave his goatee, and if the L.A. Dodgers win, Tapper must grow one.”

Maybe that’s why Tapper jumped from #5 to #2 among TV Reporters? Todd sits right behind him at #3, while Andrea Mitchell occupies the top spot. In harder news, Tapper also took a turn Sunday on This Week with White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod, contributing to his #3 rank in TV airtime and huge number of Twitter followers.

Meanwhile, People magazine managing editor Larry Hackett went from #17 to #3 among Magazine Editors thanks to a huge number of online visits and some newsstand buzz as they became the first publication to run current photos of Jaycee Dugard after she was held captive for 18 years. Hackett appeared on Today with Matt Lauer and called Dugard’s cover “radiant.” It’s just another case of a huge exclusive gamble paying off in recognition and subsequent influence.

Elsewhere on the Grid, blogger Andrew Sullivan made a huge leap from #29 to #7 in his secondary category — as a TV Pundit — with increased appearances based on President Obama’s speech on gay rights to the HRC. Sullivan, as we reported, was none too pleased with the president’s level of action. Behind him, Peggy Noonan made progress, moving from #62 to #14 among pundits, with a lot of blog buzz based on her spot as a Harvard guest lecturer and many television appearances to speak out against Obama.

The Media Moguls section also had a noticeable shake-up this week, as Viacom majority owner Sumner Redstone moved from #8 to #4, making news for selling off his non-voter company shares, attempting to raise almost $1 billion to pay off outstanding debts. Such a move is an example of the age old “any press is good press” model, because despite Redstone’s financial struggles, any mogul does well to stay in the news.

A look at the Power Grid this week reveals a few fixtures that never waver: Oprah Winfrey, Rupert Murdoch, Anna Wintour — these are media gods and little can upset that balance. But just behind them in the rest of the top ten all it takes is a big scoop or scandal to send ripples through the rest of the rankings. Here are the big shake-ups from the past week and a look at what caused them:

The TV Pundit top 5 was infiltrated last week by two big names making sizable jumps. Tom Brokaw sits as the #4 pundit, up from #17 just last week thanks to his top network/show viewership, a #5 spot in airtime and news buzz thanks to his NBC documentary American Character: Along Highway 50.

Another familiar name made a notable move with Eliot Spitzer taking the #5 spot from his previous #10. Spitzer’s news buzz is #1 with a whirl of gossip and outrage surrounding the once-disgraced New York governor. Many have speculated about his return to politics but last week saw a fine come down on one of his top aides. Spitzer’s name was also in the news for a real estate deal: he sold a garage he owns to the tune of $10 million. A political renaissance still looks iffy, but he’s having no problem staying relevant.

Much is brewing in the world of TV Titans, as couple of high-profiles news moments have resulted in big jumps, reshaping the top 10. NBC Universal Sports and Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol was all over the news last week while the 2016 Summer Olympics found their home. After a disappointing loss for Chicago, Ebersol suggested that the U.S. Olympic Committee “get real leaders,” and the subsequent buzz was enough to push him from #14 to #8. Ebersol’s contemporary, NBC News president Steve Capus, meanwhile, moved from #12 to #6 and was in the news last week for his role in Newseum’s tribute to the late Tim Russert.

Elsewhere, ESPN’s Erin Andrews completed her coup, moving from #43 to #2 among TV Reporters last week and taking the #1 spot all for herself this time around, thanks to the full swing of the football season and her ongoing nude video scandal. Another new #1 occurred within Print/Online Reporters with Andrew Ross Sorkin moving up from #6, with his Google buzz reaching a fever pitch thanks to the release of his book Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System—and Themselves.

Though the Power Grid is often a lesson in maintaining influence over time (see: Anna Wintour), due to its automated algorithm, movement in the ranks can often be traced directly to a piece of news or media event. In this sense, it serves as a barometer for any given category, and it’s not the movement that is interesting in and of itself, but the reasons behind it.

This week, Erin Andrews is a perfect example. The ESPN sideline reporter got a taste of justice when the man charged with surreptitiously taping her through a hotel peephole was arrested with help from TMZ. That burst of breaking news — combined with the start of the football season — sent Andrews skyrocketing from #43 among TV Reporters all the way to #2, with her TV Airtime at #4, News Buzz at #4 and Blog Buzz at #1. Also enjoying the beginning of the NFL season is former Giants player and current football pundit Tiki Barber, who went from #7 to #4 in the TV Pundit category.

Other huge jumps, thanks to more prolonged successes, include Steve Harvey, from #76 to #6, thanks to a current comedy tour and the continued success of his book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, which has spent 32 weeks on the best-sellers list. He maintains a top ten spot in Google, news and blog buzz and is #4 in Twitter followers among TV reporters. Meanwhile, Meghan McCain leapt from #29 to #9 among TV Pundits with her airtime and Twitter followers constantly on the rise.

Time‘s Rick Stengel went from #5 to #3 thanks to continued buzz from his interview with Iranin president Ahmadinejad, while Print/Online Reporters also experienced a shake-up, with Ezra Klein seizing the #1 spot due to his dominant blog buzz and Jennifer 8 Lee going from #6 to #2, maybe due to her City Room blogging at the New York Times about the Letterman scandal. Their rises sent last week’s #1, Dana Milbank, down to #4, while Dr. Sanjay Gupta — up last week thanks to his swine flu — fell from #4 to #7. There’s no staying power in sickness, it seems.
