The liberal blogosphere is all aflutter about the “Yup. I’m a Racist” t-shirts that were on sale at a July 3 Tea Party event in Lexington, Kentucky. Wonkette takes the shirts as “A-HA!” proof that Janeane Garofalo was right all along, while Dave Weigel helpfully explains that, like that 2008 Spartacus-style anti-healthcare “PSA,” the shirts are meant to be ironic, and presents a video interview with the vendor from last year’s event. Fair enough. Is the “Everything I Need to Know About Islam I Learned on 9/11″ part of the brilliant meta-humor?

Various commentators (myself included) have consistently called out the Birther movement, and other attacks on President Obama‘s background, as racial dogwhistles, cynical exploitations of the racial mistrust of others. MSNBC’s Ed Schultz took it a step further Tuesday night, flat-out calling current Birther superstar Donald Trump a racist.

PBS Host Tavis Smiley appeared with Lawrence O’Donnell last night and the two took turns expressing outrage over Donald Trump‘s continued willingness to say anything to attack President Obama. O’Donnell repeatedly referred to Trump as a liar, while Smiley warned that Trump’s “race to the bottom” in rhetoric was a sad sign of what he expects to come in the election season.

Much has been made of the “Color of Change” lead advertiser boycott of the Glenn Beck show on Fox News. We’ve previously suggested that the companies involved in the boycott were wimping out by just moving their ads to different programs on Fox News. In fact, Fox News has told Mediaite that no revenue has been lost. Its no mystery that the Health Care debate has raised passions on both sides of the aisles: the conservative movement has cried socialism; the progressive movement has accused the right of no-so-subtle racism. Well the claims of race baiting are about to get a bit louder with news of Kansas Rep Lynn Jenkins comment that the Republican Party would soon embrace a “Great White Hope”.
