Recapping Ricky: A Review Of Gervais’ Golden Globes Gig
So. Where were we? Comedian Ricky Gervais gave hosting the Golden Globes another whirl this weekend and, despite fears from many a media blogger and NBC exec, not a single starlet’s weave was set ablaze, and no actor was sent crying into the arms of a waiting momager.
The night started off with Gervais, fresh off his shift at the funeral home, walking onstage to a waiting glass of what appeared to beer. “Cheers,” he told his glittering, hollow-eyed colleagues. “So. Where was I?”
Worst Timing Ever: The Golden Globes Cuts To Cast Of The Help After ‘Racist’ Joke
Earlier this evening, we had a bit of fun with the technical difficulties that the Golden Globes telecast began with. At the time, we assumed that that would be the worst flub of the night. Oh boy, were we wrong. Towards the end of the show, host Ricky Gervais made a joke about how racist fellow Brit Colin Firth apparently was. Hearing the word “racist,” someone in the control room instantly thought it was a good idea to cut to the cast of The Help…
Madonna Hits Back At Ricky Gervais, Calls Him ‘A Girl,’ Invites Him To Make Out With Her
With a complete lack of shock, I can report that tonight’s Golden Globes hasn’t been particularly exciting. Sure, there have been a few funny moments, like Ricky Gervais’ monologue, William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman’s duet, and Jessica Lange’s claim that American Horror Story is “beautifully written” (ha!), but there haven’t been too many notable moments. With that being said, one notable exchange occurred between host Gervais and presenter (as well as winner!) Madonna. After Gervais made a joke about how “like a virgin” Madonna is these days, the multi-hyphenate hit back as only Madonna can.
Ricky Gervais Is As Wicked As Ever In His Return Golden Globes Monologue
Ah, the Golden Globes, perhaps the least essential thing to air on American television that doesn’t involve a Kardashian or competitive pawn shopping. It’s an awards show so meaningless that the first time in years that anyone cared about it was when some British guy got up on stage and ripped the whole thing to shreds. Fortunately for us, the Hollywood Foreign Press was smart (and masochistic) enough to bring that man back.
Even more fortunately, Ricky Gervais’ second monologue was just as biting as his first.

SNL Gives Us A Warning Preview Of Ricky Gervais Hosting The Golden Globes
Ricky Gervais has been asked back to host the 2012 Golden Globes, and SNL gave us an idea of how that might go with Jason Sudeikis doing a serviceable Gervais impression. The usual jokes were made, with Gervais seeming more tickled his sense of humor than anyone else in the room. Certainly the celebrities at the Golden Globes could handle his truth bombs, but what might Ricky Gervais hosting the “Kids’ Choice Awards” look like? Hint: there would be jokes about Selena Gomez needing a green card.
Hilarious: Ricky Gervais Shows Off His ‘Golden Globes’ On Conan
Things were bleak here at the Mediaite office a few minutes ago. After the crushing reveal that, no, a presidential candidate hadn’t had a conversation with mannequin, we were all in a dark place. How could anything be as good as that? Would we ever laugh again? Fortunately, we saw this video from last night’s Conan in which Ricky Gervais showed off his hairy man-boobs and Conan O’Brien discussed why his face had the ability to kill erections.
Ricky Gervais To Host The Golden Globes Again
British comedian Ricky Gervais is hosting the Golden Globe awards once again, our sister site Gossip Cop is reporting, citing a source involved with the show.
In Honor Of MTV’s 30th Anniversary, The Five Best Music Videos You’ve Never Seen
The network formerly known for playing “Video Music” (and inventing “reality television”) turns thirty today, and while many can complain it is showing some signs of aging (Where are the music videos?), MTV has given at least two generations lifetime memories– most Americans can’t thank Van Halen, Pat Benatar, Hall & Oates and Duran Duran enough. But some of the greatest masterpieces of the Music Video era often go unsung, so on this birthday, we bring you best music videos everyone forgot existed.
Wait. What? Ricky Gervais Claims The Golden Globes Invited Him Back (UPDATE: Or Not?)
If you’ll remember, just a couple weeks ago we were shocked, just shocked, at Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes opening. I mean, how dare he insult the integrity of an awards show that thinks Burlesque was one of the best films of the year or imply that, perhaps, Tom Hanks’ career has been slightly more impressive than Tim Allen’s? That’s blasphemy! Clearly Gervais must be chased out of town with pitchforks! He must be run out on the rails! He must be- wait, what? He’s been asked back? Oh, ok.
Will Ricky Gervais Be Back At Next Year’s Globes? Better Question: Will The Globes Be Back?
Certainly you’ve heard about the celebrity-ego-busting turn Ricky Gervais had at last week’s Golden Globes, earning him raves from some, and hints he’ll never work in that town again from others. Most of both sides of the equation seemed certain Gervais would not be back as MC for the 2012 Globes. And now that seems virtually assured, as the Globes themselves may not be back.
Bill O’Reilly And Dennis Miller Weigh In On Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes Performance
By now, just about everyone’s weighed in on Ricky Gervais’ controversial Golden Globes hosting job, so tonight, Bill O’Reilly and Dennis Miller decided to join the party. And both seemed to agree: by bringing in Gervais, the Globes got exactly what they were asking for.
We Didn’t See This Coming: Ricky Gervais, The Right’s Favorite Funnyman
We all knew Ricky Gervais‘ headline-grabbing turn at this year’s Golden Globes would be some kind of defining moment for the British comic. But here’s an unexpected result: Gervais has, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “scored with one demographic: political conservatives.”
In a THR story dubbed “Conservatives Rally Behind Ricky Gervais,” writer Paul Bond describes the interesting fallout from Sunday night’s celebrity mocking performance at the Globes:
Watch Ricky Gervais Tell Conan O’Brien Which Golden Globes Joke Got Cut
Ricky Gervais has received a ton of attention for his allegedly caustic style of hosting the Golden Globes Sunday night. Some even found his comedic lack of civility directed to the celebrities in attendance quite entertaining, making another dreadful awards showmore palatable. Turns out that Gervais wanted to open the show with a sight gag that the show’s producers found far too controversial to allow it to go on as planned. Fortunately, during an appearance on TBS’ Conan O’Brien show, Mr. Gervais revealed the gag.
Defending Gervais: Why Every Awards Show Should Now Hire The Caustic Host
If television programmers and award show producers are smart, they would consider Sunday night’s broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards as an historic night. Much has already been made of the controversial comedic styling of host Ricky Gervais, and his brave choice of forgoing a predictably convivial route for a more caustic road less traveled in hosting the show. And God bless him for it. Not only did he single-handedly make an otherwise boring and predictable program seem surprising (if not dangerous?), but the viewership rewarded his bravado, scoring record ratings for the fledgling show.
HFPA President Thinks Ricky Gervais “Crossed Line” With Golden Globes Jokes
Last night, we told you we were a bit afraid that Ricky Gervais‘ no-holds-barred jokes while hosting the Golden Globes Awards would lose him favor among some in Hollywood and, well. We were right: With big egos come thin skins.
BREAKING: Ricky Gervais Explains The “Missing Hour” At The Golden Globes
British comic Ricky Gervais, whose performance as MC of the Golden Globes Sunday night earned far more attention that the award winners, has just released a statement through his publicist regarding the “missing hour” when Gervais seemed to vanish mid-show, sparking conspiracy theory-making on Twitter: did Ricky just get fired…or worse?
Gervais’ opening monologue may have sent celebs squirming in the hall, but it didn’t get him yanked, even for an hour. Katie Phillips, Gervais’ publicist, has just released a statement, saying the hour was planned in advance, and had more to do with comedy than conspiracy:
Ricky Gervais Is Suddenly The Biggest Booking For Piers Morgan’s Debut Week
With heaps of promotional and marketing winds helping it set sail, Piers Morgan Tonight launches tonight, with a slate of guests in its first week that would make any cable news booker blush. Tonight’s show opens with Oprah Winfrey, followed later in the week by Howard Stern, Condi Rice and George Clooney. But its Thursday night’s guest, Ricky Gervais, that is suddenly looking like the smartest and most interesting booking of the lot after his turn hosting the Golden Globes raised a nation’s eyebrows (and Hollywood’s dander?)
A World Divided: Ricky Gervais At Golden Globes: Sheer Brilliance, Or Career Suicide?
The world, on this MLK day, is starkly divided. It all comes down to one issue that has torn us into two camps: was Ricky Gervais amazing as MC of the Golden Globes, or was it a career-killing crash and burn?
At The Washington Post, Lisa De Moraes is part of Camp Major Meltdown, writing–apparently seriously–that the Globes “will go down in history for having brought Hollywood together in its hatred of host Ricky Gervais.”
Ricky Gervais Ends Golden Globes By Thanking God For Making Him An Atheist
Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes tonight on NBC and was fearless in his searing wit and, at times, mean-spirited jabs at the Hollywood elite. After setting the tone with a bitterly hilarious monologue, Gervais continued to jab at upcoming presenters in a stunningly unpleasant, uncomfortable and yet entertaining way. At one point in the show, the Twittersphere openly wondered if he’d been fired mid-show after he’d disappeared from the stage for what seemed like an eternity. He did return to close the show, and went out with a bang, saying “I want to thank God for making me an atheist.”
Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes Monologue Gets Laughs, But Probably Loses Friends
Ricky Gervais is, thusfar, doing a bang-up job of hosting the 68th annual Golden Globes Awards. And by that we mean he might want to have someone accompany him on his walk through the 68th annual Golden Globes parking lot tonight what with all the jokes he’s been making at actors’ expenses.
First Look: Piers Morgan’s New Set On CNN (And First Week’s Guests)
For decades, Larry King‘s iconic set–perhaps best described as a “Lite Brite map of the world” was as recognizable as the host himself. As CNN prepares to launch a new host into King’s 9 p.m. timeslot, much has been mentioned about the set, which will incorporate the ability for host Piers Morgan to have a live studio audience.
Conan O’Brien And Ricky Gervais Take On WikiLeaks With “RickyLeaks”
While the WikiLeaks saga brings about it a lengthy debate about the thin line between transparency and ruining the privacy necessary to run a government, it’s also a comedy gold mine. I mean, how often are public figures routinely described as “James Bond villain-esque.” While SNL went about butchering a fright wig just enough for it to look properly Assange-like, Conan O’Brien went the goofier route, bringing back Ricky Gervais to reveal some new deep, dark, classified secrets…all about Conan!
Ricky Gervais Busts On Mel Gibson’s Boozy Past
Did Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais make Mel Gibson look like a jerk by reminding us all of his past problems with alcohol? Or did he do him a favor by making light of his troubled history? Either way, it didn’t appear that Gibson saw it coming, so the prevailing mood was one of uneasiness. For those unfamiliar with Gibson’s past, he has admitted problems with alcoholism. Which made Gervais introduction all the more awkward/hilarious when he said (after just sipping a beer) “I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the next man is Mel Gibson.” Video after the jump.
