Rick Scott’s budget proposals. One protest in Sarasota got a surprise guest in the form of Stephen King. The author gave a speech of support and railed against Scott, comparing he, Wisconsin’s Gov.
One of King’s main points was about tax cuts for the wealthy.

“Now, you might say, ‘What are you doing up there? Aren’t you rich?’ The answer is, ‘Thank God, yes.’

…

And you know what? As a rich person, I pay 28% taxes. What I want to ask you is, why don’t I pay 50%? Why is everybody in my bracket not paying 50%? The Republicans will say, from John Boehner to Mitch McConnell to Rick Scott, that we can’t do that because, if we tax guys like me, there won’t be any jobs. It’s bull! It’s total bull!”

At the end of his speech, one of the protesters yelled out that King should use Rick Scott as the star of his next horror novel. He replied that he should maybe do just that.

Of course, this is King, so it’s not all history and politics. The main character, of course, coms from Maine, and the trip back in time? Classic King. The storeroom of a greasy spoon:

Jake Epping is a thirty-five-year-old high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching adults in the GED program. He receives an essay from one of the students—a gruesome, harrowing first person story about the night 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a hammer. Harry escaped with a smashed leg, as evidenced by his crooked walk.

Not much later, Jake’s friend Al, who runs the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to 1958. He enlists Jake on an insane—and insanely possible—mission to try to prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson and his new world of Elvis and JFK, of big American cars and sock hops, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake’s life—a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

The book, which was announced Wednesday, won’t be a quick read at 1,000 pages:

Chuck Verrill, whose company have the American rights, said: “The novel is big, ambitious and haunting. King has probably absorbed the social, political and popular culture of his American generation as thoroughly and imaginatively as any other writer.”

On his weekly segment with Bill O’Reilly last night, Beck responded to comments made about him by novelist Stephen King, who compared him to “urban nutcakes” in the honesty of his perceived insanity. Beck was pretty happy to have been called honest.

Beck and O’Reilly did not clearly explain why King was talking politics in Entertainment Weekly, but he did take the time to describe Beck as a crazy person preaching that the apocalypse was nearing on the street, and said that, “like those urban nutcakes,” he thought Beck was honest. Beck’s reaction was a little appreciative– “I think he meant that in a good way… I’m a nutcase, but I’m sincere”– and more than a little snarky, pointing out that The Overton Window had been selling better than many of King’s novels.

He also took the opportunity to point out that in Satan-related swipes from Stephen King, Beck comes out on top of O’Reilly– having only been called “Satan’s young brother,” with O’Reilly taking the dubious “Satan’s mentally challenged older brother” title. This prompted O’Reilly to propose a Satan family road trip: a special Bold Fresh Tour performance in Maine, followed by an afterparty at Stephen King’s house.

It’s an incredible book, one which taught me to fear hotel room bathtubs, what a topiary was, why you can’t forget about the boiler, and the phrase “officious little prick” (I’ve met plenty of them since then.) I hate horror movies in general but I make a huge exception for this one, because I loved Stephen King books so much growing up and because this one was so damn good. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson in what might be his most iconic role, it’s a classic movie filled with classic clips. So — in the spirit of Hallowe’en, Mediaite brings you a celebration of The Shining — from The Simpsons to The Family Guy and all the redrum in between.

Every week we take a look at the newsstand and try to pick the winners and losers. We call this feature "Cover Wars" and this week we're looking at the July issues of the leading Men's Lifestyle magazines, which featured a lot more skin than usual.

Anything you can do, GQ can do meta. A coquettish Sascha Baron Cohen — posing as a nude Bruno — is visually appealing, funny, and self-mocking all at the same time. Don’t you see dear reader – they’re in on the joke! And that’s a good thing too – because this is just happens to be their (annual?) Comedy Issue — a topic that’s not necessarily in the GQ wheelhouse.

Mediate Grade (A-) – The truth is this cover looks great. And putting the current comedy IT boy on the cover lets us know that the editorial staff has the right- sense of humor.

Esquire also features a (nearly) naked subject on its cover, but chose instead to go in the opposite direction as GQ. Bar Refaeli wears merely a white bikini bottom and some body paint cleverly painted outlining the contents of the July issue – a Stephen King cover.

Mediate Grade (B-) – We love the way this looks – and kudos for the creative minds at Esquire for doing something cool — but it’s been done. More to the point — something doesn’t quite feel right with this cover. Nobody is going to complain about the beautiful shot of Ms. Refaeli, vut what does she – or this concept — have to do with Stephen King? Or the rest of the contents of this issue for that matter? Color us confused.

Maxim features Olivia Wilde wearing a shear covering (with naughty bits smoothed over by Photoshop). Who is Olivia Wilde you might ask? Well she’s plays a Doctor on House – though something tells me that the editors didn’t book her on the cover because of her acting career (ed. – which is a shame – House is awesome)

Mediaite Grade (C-):Coverlines of “Recession Sex!” and “United States of Awesome!” reveal more about the target audience – and the shamelessness of its editors.

Bradley Cooper graces the cover of the July Details issue timed to promote blockbuster hit The Hangover. And if that won’t get you to pluck the issue from the news stands – then how about an article on how President Obama can make you better in bed? Excuse me while I run to the local magazine retailer right now, if only to figure out what they’ll say! Wait. Nevermind.

Mediaite Grade (B-): An interesting choice of cover lines – announcing the beaming movie star’s mug as “That Guy from Wedding Crashers.” When the talent you book for the cover has to be explained as that guy, well that’s not ideal. All is not lost – the cover at least looks great.

COVER WARS WINNER: Call us suckers for shameless publicity stunts, but we’re all very excited about the upcoming Bruno movie. GQ won this round with the booking alone (though as usual, Creative Director Fred Woodward delivered the goods.)
