Tiger Woods: Golf Media vs. PR Machine (Update)
Since Tiger Woods first picked up a golf club, he's lived life with a camera in his face or a notebook-toting reporter following his every move. Most of it's been positive: Look at the little two-year-old swing that club! Look at the teenage phenom plow through the amateur ranks! Look at the 21-year-old win the Masters! Records fell, the press was in awe, and as he grew in age, so did golf in stature. As much as the PGA Tour would like to sell you on the greatness of many of its players (and believe me — they try very, very hard), the sport just isn't as compelling without Tiger. (Just look at how dreadful the television ratings were for the tournaments he missed during the time he took off to recover from knee surgery.) For the Tour — and most of the sycophantic golf writers who cover him — a tabloid-fueled story of this magnitude puts many of them in an unenviable position. Tiger Woods Domestic Violence Cover-Up Plot Line Introduced By TMZ
video As more details emerged about the circumstances of the Tiger Woods car crash, the more suspicions were raised that there may be more to the story. Now TMZ.com has blown the reported version of events wide open - alleging domestic violence led to the injuries, and the car crash was used as a cover up. (more...)
