Retrospective: Arthur Hochstein And 15 Years Of Time Magazine Covers

times

Arthur Hochstein was the art director of Time magazine for 15 years, through the end of 2009. During his time there he designed over 1000 covers, including some of the most memorable magazine images of recent years. His iconic cover designs include everything from OJ Simpson, 9/11, the War in Iraq, George Bush, and Barack Obama. And although the covers of Time included some of the best illustrators and photographers in the world, many of the covers were photo-illustrated by Hochstein himself, who created numerous humorous and pointed images.

What Are The Top 25 Magazines Based On Twitter Followers?

timecover

Dylan Stableford of The Wrap’s Media Alley blog looked around on Twitter to find out which national magazines had the most Twitter followers. After analyzing his findings, Stableford was surprised to find that “the biggest magazines in terms of print circulation have a shockingly puny presence on Twitter.” For example, Good Housekeeping (4.4 million circulation, 4,683 followers) didn’t break the Top 25. Neither did AARP The Magazine (24 million circ., 358 followers), which, really, should shock nobody. Meanwhile, Time (3.4 million circ., 2.2 million followers) and the embattled Newsweek (1.9 million circ., 1.2 million followers) both placed in the top ten.

In it, comedian and actor Judah Friedlander shows Time’s Josh Sanburn, Nate Jones, and Claire Suddath how they can take each other out in an office setting.

Fareed Zakaria: Al-Qaeda Not Really A Big Deal, Americans ‘Overreacted’ To 9/11

Fareed_Zakaria video

Fareed Zakaria warns in Newsweek that Al-Qaeda was significantly more incompetent that Americans believed in the aftermath of 9/11, and the result is a “national-security state” that threatens civil liberties. Any other time of year, comments like this would be controversial at best, especially from the mild-mannered Zakaria. So close to the anniversary of the most painful event in recent American history, it borders on the callous.

Fareed Zakaria Leaving Newsweek for Time

fareedzakaria

After ten years with the magazine, Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria will be leaving at the end of September to join Time as Editor at Large. Time Managing Editor Rick Stengel announced today that he is “thrilled that Fareed is joining us; his singular voice in explaining the world to people is a natural fit with our editorial mission at a moment when Time is more relevant and wide-reaching than it’s ever been.”

NYT Slams Politico And Time For Scooping Rolling Stone On Its McChrystal Story

Picture 6

President Obama may have solved his McChrystal problem but the long tail of the now-infamous Rolling Stone profile is still kicking around the media world. In his column today at the New York Times, David Carr takes Politico and Time to the woodshed for posting a full PDF of the McChrystal story before Rolling Stone made it available on their site.

Here are some of the highlights from the collection:

Alvin Greene Asks Time Magazine For “Man Of The Year” Award

url

One unexpectedly victorious campaign for unemployed South Carolina Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene just doesn’t seem like enough these days. In the midst of a confusing run against established GOP incumbent Jim DeMint, Greene dished to Time magazine on his polished campaign platform and his plan to defeat DeMint in an upcoming debate, but requested a few things in return: namely, cash and the magazine’s “Person of the Year” award.

Michael Kinsley, Opinion, and the Evolution of Media

Michael Kinsley, from the San Francisco Chronicle

The world of traditional media has overturned in the past decade – and few have ridden the crest of this wave more savvily than Michael Kinsley. As a pundit on CNN’s “Crossfire,” editing Slate, experimenting with the editorial page of the Los Angeles Times, and now at The Atlantic, Kinsley’s philosophy has been an open desire to speak truth to power, and to bend the boundaries of where and how the media engages with its audience. Philip Bump examines the arc of Kinsley’s career, and just how ahead of the curve that arc has been.

Texas Governor’s War On EPA Gets Time Feature On Day Of Natural Gas Explosion

rickperry

It was already bad timing for Texas Governor Rick Perry to star in a Time feature on his administration’s war against environmental regulations yesterday, the 48th day since BP’s Deepwater Horizon platform exploded. The story, which highlights his opposition to federal regulation of energy companies, coincided not just with that disaster– which is a major player in the feature itself. Adding insult to injury, the article coincided with a natural gas explosion that left one dead in the northern part of his state.

Picture 4

Is Glenn Beck’s time in the media klieg lights coming to a close? The latest Nielsen numbers reveal that Beck’s audience is down nearly 30% since the start of the year. But why the drop (if, indeed, there even is one)? Is the country growing bored of chalkboards, or is the larger issue that the nation is merely out-Becking Glenn Beck?

Magazines Appear To Be Missing The Point Of The iPad

Picture 5

Sometimes you really have to wonder whether the magazine world deserves the fate that is being dealt to them. After a year of plummeting ad sales and deep cutbacks that saw the shuttering of many a beloved title many magazine, aficionados greeted news of the iPad as the savior to their many problems. And perhaps it still might be, though likely not like this.

David Remnick: Obama Does Not Have The Talents Of Ronald Reagan

Picture 3 video

As Frank Rich noted in his Sunday column this week a whole lot of people suffer from the habit of comparing President Obama to past political heavy-weights. Or not. At least according to New Yorker editor David Remnick today on Meet the Press, who noted that Obama “does not have the talents” of Ronald Reagan.

a_w_breitbart_0405

Is there anyone who hasn’t profiled Andrew Breitbart in the last few months? Yowzer. What is there left to say (other than the computer in the bathtub trick is always tempting but generally ends badly)? Instead let’s listen to one side of Andrew Breitbart’s phone conversation with Ann Coulter, as recorded by Time.

Glenn Beck Explains That He Does, In Fact, Love Jesus

-2 your moment of glenn

I think this may be Glenn Beck’s version of backpedaling. Nearly ten days after Time posted an article titled “Why Does Glenn Beck Hate Jesus?” — which itself followed a New York Times piece about certain church leaders encouraging their followers to stop watching Beck — Beck has addressed the issue. Sort of.

Think The Country Is Divided Now? Just Wait Till November

Picture 13 coming attractions

Can it be possible that when it comes to bitter partisan divide we haven’t seen anything yet? Last summer’s Tea Party/Town Halls appeared to take much of Washington, and the media, by surprise (and by storm). But with this November’s midterms already looming large on the political horizon, look no further than the anti-health care ads sweeping the country for a preview of what’s to come.

maddow12

It’s okay if you forgot to spring forward this morning and accidentally slept in an extra hour. It’s Sunday, what are you, a farmer/television morning talk show host/weekend blogger? But in case you’re still wondering why you have to go through this b.s. twice a year, here’s Rachel Maddow to break it down for you.

Time‘s Mark Halperin has finally raised his head from the extended Game Change tour to weigh in on the current state of President Obama. In a four point summary published Sunday, Halperin lists four ways in which Obama is repeating the mistakes of George W. Bush. Andrew Sullivan is having none of it. And I mean NONE.

White House Keeps Reporters Behind Barriers At Obama HCR Event

behindbars

This is sort of strange. Time‘s national political correspondent Karen Tumulty reports that when she attended President Obama’s health care rally in Pennsylvania earlier today she was not allowed to talk to the public.

Has The Internet Turned Its Back On Team Obama?

461_30_Barack-Obama-using-his-Mac-and-Blackberry

The internet has made definitive revolutionary changes in the way Americans consume their media and interact with their federal government– not exactly a shocking statement. But Michael Scherer at Time Magazine is now proposing that the most tech-savvy government in history is being hurt by its inability to control the flow of information (and misinformation) online.
