The group Doctors Without Borders says it received more than $100,000 in donations in a matter of hours after ABC News aired a report on the unfolding famine in Africa–considered the worst humanitarian disaster in the world. ABC’s David Muir, who reported from the region for a week and a half, says an estimated 29,000 Somali children aged 5 and under have died in just the last three months.

In her first television interview, the hotel maid who accused former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of trying to sexually assault her has spoken to Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts. In the exclusive, Nafissatou Diallo recounts what she says happened in the hotel room at the center of the scandal, and tells Roberts she wants justice. “I want him to go to jail.” The interview, which aired first on GMA this morning, will continue on ABC World News and Nightline.

In an exclusive interview set to air on ABC World News and Nightline, Casey Anthony juror Jennifer Ford said she and the other jurors cried and were “sick to our stomachs” after voting to acquit Anthony of charges that she killed her 2-year-old daughter Caylee.

“I did not say she was innocent,” said Ford, who had previously only been identified as juror number 3. “I just said there was not enough evidence. If you cannot prove what the crime was, you cannot determine what the punishment should be.”

The February finishing order for the network evening newscasts didn’t look much different, with Brian Williams‘ NBC Nightly News taking top honors, followed by Diane Sawyer‘s ABC World News and Katie Couric‘s CBS Evening News finishing last.

But at ABC, news execs point to promising signs World News is making progress. It was the best ratings ABC’s best February performance in three years, and compared to February 2010, World News grew its total audience by one percent, the only network evening news program to grow (CBS was down by 4% and NBC dropped by 10%).

Diane Sawyer just finished up anchoring the Chilean miner story last week (which won her praise from one broadcast news expert), and after the midterm election season winds down next month, she’ll be bringing ABC’s World News to China.

Sawyer previewed the trip, where she’ll be anchoring from for three days beginning November 15, Friday night on World News.

When Katie Couric moved to CBS in 2006, the decision was subject to endless media fanfare and criticism. Diane Sawyer‘s move to ABC, replacing Charlie Gibson as anchor of World News, however, was much quieter. Diane Sawyer has been the anchor of ABC’s World News for just over one week, and the first week ratings are in.

It’s obviously very early, but here’s a breakdown of the good, the bad and what the future may hold.

With Diane Sawyer‘s “smooth” debut last night as anchor of ABC’s World News, the transitions taking place at the network are beginning to come to light.

Executive Producer Jon Banner says it was a “solid” start – and talked to Mediaite about ratings, how Sawyer is different from Charlie Gibson and more.

New York Times TV Critic Alessandra Stanley‘s takeaway from the move is that Diane Sawyer taking over for Charlie Gibson means she, Katie Couric and Brian Williams are now “evenly matched in looks and take-charge personality.” Also, from earlier in the column: “Ms. Sawyer appears to have the same high-octane drive and ambition as Brian Williams and Katie Couric.” But wait – looks?!

Of the series of changes slated to take place at ABC News by the end of the week, it appears a couple decisions are clearer now. Juju Chang is in line to take over as the news anchor on Good Morning America, while Chris Cuomo, who currently has the job, is in talks to be a co-anchor on 20/20, along with Elizabeth Vargas.

Many changes are about to take place at ABC News, as Charlie Gibson officially signs off as anchor of World News December 18.

If George Stephanopoulos gets Diane Sawyer‘s GMA gig, Nightline anchor Terry Moran could be the odds-on favorite at This Week.

The rumblings about the soon-to-be vacant anchor seat at ABC’s Good Morning America are now focused on one name as the lead candidate – George Stephanopoulos.

While a spokesperson for ABC says no decision is close to being made, TV insiders say the This Week anchor has become the lead contender for the job. But there may be more to the story.

Ann Curry sat down with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad yesterday for his first interview since the Iranian elections and the unrest in Iran — and got some revealing non-answers from him. Did he steal the election? “I don’t know what you mean by that.” Was there was any scenario under which Iran would develop nukes? “We do not see any need for such weapons.” And then there was this: “I don’t know what you mean by ‘no.’”

A major shake-up at ABC World News will take place beginning in 2010, as anchor Charlie Gibson will retire and Diane Sawyer will step in as his replacement. Sawyer, currently an anchor on ABC’s Good Morning America, regularly fills in on World News for Gibson.

Despite diminishing ratings from its heyday, the three evening news anchor spots are still prime real estate. And ABC is playing it up big online.
