I remember watching her standup specials on Comedy Central and thinking she was very funny. But when comedians start talking about things they don’t know about, and only attack on side of the spectrum (with quite dubious claims… see above), the audience goes away.

That is the difference in writing comedy for everyone, and writing comedy for your “friends.” When you’re in Hollywood, and everyone thinks the same, it’s easy to get caught up and think “everyone everywhere” thinks the same thing… and in the process alienate the majority of the country.
