Bill O’Reilly’s Take On Current TV: “Nobody Watches” 30 Rock And Other Gems

Bill O’Reilly’s “Did You See That” segment is fast resembling a humorous conversation between a tech-savvy kid trying to explain to their great-grandfather how to use e-mail and other newfangled contraptions.  In discussing the results of a survey regarding the favorite television shows of Democrats and Republicans, correspondent Juliet Huddy was shocked to learn O’Reilly hardly knew anything about the most popular shows.  She patiently informed him that Dexter is a serial killer, Mad Men star Jon Hamm is good looking and The Amazing Race is a feel-good show.

O’Reilly admitted he’s not a big TV guy and prefers reading, which may explain his dismissal of NBC’s 30 Rock with “liberals” Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin as something “nobody watches.”  Although O’Reilly did provide a perceptive take as to why fellow Fox host Glenn Beck ranks so highly amongst Republicans, “Beck is basically presenting a scenario that the left is trying to kill the nation, so if you’re [on the] right, you like that.”

Ultimately the study seemed to find Republicans prefer optimistic shows while Democrats prefer shows with troubled characters.  However, if that were true wouldn’t Beck be more popular with Democrats than Republicans?  Otherwise, there was at least one show popular in uniting viewers across party lines: American Idol.

Yes they only tune in to watch their Irish uncle called O’reilly!

  • Just4thefax

Fact: Hawaii 5.0 or Chase? Watch one then go back a watch the recorded Chase episode. Same as with 30 Rock. 30 Rock Live show was not watched live at my house. If he had a woman to cuddle up with on the couch he would watch TV shows like 30 Rock. Sad.

“30 Rock” draws over 5M viewers. On Tuesday, Bill-o was under 1M. No one watches “30 Rock”. Looks like Bill-o has redrawn the laws of addition and subtraction.

I guess I can kind of get not knowing about Dexter, since it’s on Showtime and not a network, or even basic cable. But how do you not know Mad Men? In 2010?

God bless him if he prefers reading to watching TV. But it wouldn’t hurt a guy in the media industry to at least try and keep his finger on the pulse of pop culture.

I prefer playing video games to TV :)

Tuesdays O’Reilly (8+11pm) had over 5 million total viewers…1.5 million in the important 25-54 demo.
Where did you get your 30 Rock numbers????

Bill has not drawn under 1 million viewers in years. When you get a brain from the Wizard get out a press release on that broom you ride on.

Coming from someone who call’s himself a dummy, I’d be careful to take numerical calculation seriously from such an individual.

  • pakattak

All of this ratings talk still doesn’t address the problem that people still watch “Two-and-a-Half Men”.

Apologize for what exactly? is it by calling you what you call yourself? a dummy!

Just for a comparison, last Thursday (11/11):

    30 Rock — 5,660,000 viewers
    O’Reilly Factor — 3,759,000 viewers

So… Bill can’t say nobody watches 30 Rock, when they get MORE viewers than him.

That said, Bill does fantastic numbers for cable, whereas 30 Rock does okay, but certainly not fantastic, for network.

In an interesting bit of packaging, O’Reilly listed the Republican shows in order one, two and four, skipping number three, while he mixed-up the order on the Democratic side, skipping Olbermann which came out at number one, reversed two and three, then skipped down to number eight to take an easy swipe at “30 Rock”.

Of course, none of it means anything because the best I can determine, they tacked-on a question about what shows people like to other surveys that had already listed their political affiliation, so all it really means is that Beck and Olbermann made it onto more people’s lists and not that most watch either show.

As for the whole “damaged characters” scheme that the Hollywood Reporter tried to push, you might be able to say that it has some foundation, but if you look at both lists and take out Beck and Olbermann, you’re left with a Republican list that largely reflects the Top 20 and shows that aren’t trendy for urban and urbane people to name.

  • greg454

Well, as Republican-libertarian as I am, I hate The Amazing Race and American Idol, I also can’t stand Dexter and Mad Men.

I prefer South Park and Desperate Housewives.

  • dummy123

5,600,000 for a prime-time network show is a FAILURE! Is that even Top 50??

If 30 Rock was no so loved by the leftys it would have been canceled a long time ago!

Not sure if it’s the dummy in you but you are not being clear.

  • omega919

To be fair, you’re actually right about the numbers being bad. The more I look into it, 5 million for a network primetime show is pretty lousy.

  • MiddleRoader

So can we assume Republicans watch feel good shows because they don’t feel good about their own lives? And democrats want to understand because they don’t understand why Republicans can be so cold and callous?

  • DaTruth

It’s unfortunate that 30 Rock is essentially becoming a parody of a parody. It’s just way too silly now to even get through. There’s still the occasional diamond-in-the-rough line that’s really funny, but by and large it’s becoming unwatchable.

  • lane

I believe studies show that republicans are more optimistic, self-reliant and family oriented than democrats in general. It actually makes sense, if you blame others for your problems, you will be miserable. If you believe that everyone has problems and you’re responsible to fixing your problems, you’ll be happier.

Glenn Beck makes sense to me, he’s very funny. His clips make me laugh, even when his point is nutty. Kind of like stewart’s daily show.

Optimistic? You’ve got to be kidding me (yourself)? They have been running with how Obama is going to ruin this country with his Socialist/Communist/Nazi beliefs. Fear mongering does not seem to me such an optimistic outlook.

  • stoogedudes

I gotta give Republicans credit for one thing. They apparently like Modern Family. Such a great show.

Gotta disagree on Dexter, that show is addictive for me and the last few episodes have been exceptional.

royal douche you are always so quick to say that that small amount of the country watching renders fox unimportant and now you are saying that it makes 30 rock a viable program?

  • tstev

Bill O’Reilly, all you deserve to watch is “Dancing with Stars” and “American Idol”. It is very likely 30 Rock reruns would outlive you because it is funny.

“Gotta disagree on Dexter, that show is addictive for me and the last few episodes have been exceptional.”

—Well, I respect your opinion, but generally I find cop shows boring, even if a cop is also a serial killer. When it comes to dark shows, I was a fan of The Practice, I love to see attorneys defending criminals, in spite of my support of the death penalty, I believe that everyone deserves the best possible defense in court.

I did try watching Dexter once, and it was ok, but wasn’t crazy about it.

You try to point out the fact that 30 Rock gets more viewers. Yet, Bill O’Reilly manages to get the wingnut’s collective panties in a bunch. 30 Rock isn’t rated in the top 20 in this television season. The 20th program garners about 12,000,000 viewers. In the top 100, 30 Rock is #57. Given they hype given on 30 Rock in the article, I’m not impressed.

    @Magister

Thank you for providing something insightful about this clip and putting O’reilly’s spin in prospective.

  • Bad Wolf

Accepting Bill’s limited knowledge and facts re: popular TV and it’s relationship with conservative or liberals viewers, I would observe that conservatives like moralistic stories with clearly defined values of right and wrong.

Liberals on the other hand, prefer more complex, story lines, characters and yes, moral ambiguity.
Liberals can tolerate the shades of gray that conservatives only love in their Turner Classic B&W movies.

  • Sidebar

There is another interpretation that could be used for the comparison of the shows listed for both sides: conservatives like simple shows where they don’t have to think, while liberals like shows that challenge them intellectually.

American Idol is certainly not about thinking, it’s only about how showy, glamorous and popular you can be, but ultimately, everything is very forgettable. (Without looking it up, can you name the last four winners of the show?) The Amazing Race lets you look at different places around the world, but only in an extremely narrow &Sanitized way; besides, the show is all about conflicts between team members, not purely “feel-good”. As nothing more than a game show, it is something where you can take off your thinking cap and just watch. And fas for Glenn Beck… well, he does all your thinking for you and tells you what you should believe.

On the other hand, dramatic shows like Dexter, Mad Men and 30 Rock are about conflicts between realistically portrayed & well-thought out characters, not cookie cutter people where you can see the episode’s ending from miles away. With Dexter, the show challenges you to try and understand someone society would normally push you to ignore or just avoid. Mad Men attempts to portray the past as it really was, not just sanitized overviews; the women of the show are excellent stand-ins for how women really were feeling at a time when they were fighting for their freedoms and their rightful place in society. As for 30 Rock, I admit that I have never watched it, so cannot speak to it, but it has had years of repeated success which means that it is certainly reaching a large audience that appreciates it.

  • Sidebar

Incidentally, after looking at the full list (which was linked elsewhere) I found it interesting that “DEsperate Housewives” was listed among the favorite of Republicans, since it would seem that it is completely against the “morally upright, goodness affirming” tone that was claimed in the video clip. I also wonder what it means that liberals seem to like “Law & Order” more than conservatives do.
