Schieffer To Giuliani: ‘Are There Moderate Republicans Out There Anymore?’

video

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani appeared on Face the Nation today to talk about the Republican presidential race and something about the Super Bowl. Giuliani didn’t endorse any particular candidate in the race, and while he admitted he personally admires all of the candidates in the field (though I’m guessing that doesn’t include Ron Paul), he’s concerned with how much they have been attacking each other during this primary season. But it’s not just the attacks themselves, it’s that they sound like they’re coming from the left.

RELATED: Bob Schieffer Confronts Gingrich: Some Say You Are Doing Obama’s Work For Him

Giuliani cited Newt Gingrich‘s attack on Mitt Romney over his time at Bain Capital, and Romney going after Gingrich on how he’s raised money as two prime examples of this. There could not be a starker contrast, Giuliani argued, between two candidates in a Republican race. He credited Gingrich with having a better tax plan than Romney, and admitted “it would be a much more interesting race” if it was just the moderate Romney against one conservative instead of both Gingrich and Rick Santorum splitting that constituency.

Bob Schieffer brought up statements Giuliani made in the past about both candidates, including his bewilderment at how much Romney has changed his positions over the years. Giuliani stuck by that argument, calling Romney a “traditional moderate Republican” and while normally the socially moderate Giuliani would get behind the more moderate candidate in the race, he’s not sure if he can support a candidate who’s made as many flip-flops as Romney.

When Schieffer asked if Giuliani had any regrets about not entering the race this time around, he just laughed and admitted his social views would not get him far in a current Republican contest. Then Schieffer went back to Giuliani’s self-description as a moderate and asked him a question about the state of the Republican party.

“Are there moderate Republicans out there anymore? Is there such a thing as what we used to see as the Republican establishment?”

RELATED: Rush Limbaugh Slams GOP Establishment: ‘We Nominate Milquetoast Moderates And We Lose’

Giuliani admitted he does not really care for the “moderate” self-description, but in order to distinguish himself from the rest of the party on social issues, he has to adopt that label.

Hey Bob, why do you guys in the Media never ask the question “Are there any moderate democrats out there anymore?”

  • Anonymous

The real question is whether Bob is on his meds.   If he thinks Romney and other other moderates are far right he’s in Chavez-ville.

  • Anonymous

Answer: Because there’s a pretty famous moderate Democrat out there named Barack Obama.

  • Anonymous

That’s funny because, only you guys think he is moderate. So now you see why we on the right think our guys are moderate. It is all relative, but since the media are liberals, they think all libs are moderates and all conservatives are radicals.

  • Gloves Wilson Donahue

Dems abandoned any sense in 2008 and elected the most liberal of 100 Senators, the most partisan guy ever, because he campaigned as a moderate, instead of the wackjob he actually is.

Going on Face the Nation must be like stepping back 75 years in time talking to a guy with a press pass in his fedora and no idea of what’s happening in the 21st century.

  • Anonymous

wake up – there are not liberals or conservatives just a sideshow by our ‘representatives’ the corporatists.  There is no Free Market Capitalism just Crony Capitalism where Dems and Rebublicans give our money away to Corporations whom in many cases have stolen generations of our savings illegally.

  • Anonymous

Have you ever seen Dennis Kucinich? Bernie Sanders? Gavin Newsom? I’m really curious as to what this President has done that is so shockingly liberal. His DoJ refuses to prosecute Wall St. crimes, Guantanamo is still open, predator drones are still flying, drugs are still illegal, he “debates” on gay marriage…..

The closest thing I can think of is the hated socialist Obamacare, which was dreamed up by the GOP’s presumptive nominee to replace him.

Seriously. What has this guy DONE to make people so insane?

  • Anonymous

“Fundamental transformation” (0bama’s words) is hardly moderate.

It’s like if somebody came to your house, transformed the kitchen into the bedroom, the living room into the kitchen and the bedroom into the rec room. (This last is about a “moderate” as 0bama could get).

There are not enough medications to reverse the hands of time on this anachronistic fossil, whose “Best Before” date is 01/01/1940.

  • Anonymous

There are moderate/liberal/centrist/progressive Republicans, they just cant impact the party while it is stuck in this MORE CONSERVATIVE THAN CONSERVATIVE enslavement to CONSERVALIGIOUS RETHUGLICANS.
-Any mention of being bi-partisan dooms them to “the forever rejected” list that conservatives use to judge a candidate or potential candidate.
-If you do not swear allegiance to that national traitor Grover ‘We will make America so weak its enemies can drown it a bathtub’ Norquist you cannot be considered a republican or seek office as a republican.
-If you do not bow to the political demands of the religious right you can not consider yourself a republican or seek office as a republican.
-If you believe in a right of self-determination and/or independence of thought you can not claim to be or seek office as a republican.
-If you ever admit that anyone other than a republican has a valid point or a good idea or has done good work you absolutely have no right to be or run as a republican.
    -etc.etc.etc.

Until they reject the belief and practice that only an adherence to conservatism is the only legitimate basis of governing, governance, and government there will be no REAL moderates or any other republicans not considered to be MORE CONSERVATIVE THAN CONSERVATIVE allowed to have a voice or a part in the party other than as a powerless financial contributor and a powerless in the party voter.

That’s right you have to vote republican even if you think republicans are wrong.or you get labeled RINO and thereafter are excluded from the republican conversation and the republican party in general except for your mandatory for an approved conservative republican vote. OR ELSE

how dare people question how Mitt made his money! HA! The nerve!

  • Anonymous

As long as the President is breathing they hate him, they are enraged that he was elected in the first place and by their obstruction are punishing the American people for not seizing on conservatism’s cult like nature as their only hope for a future, remember “Conservative Only Conservative and Always Conservative” is the way they act and the way they govern.

Moderate Republicans and Conservative Democrats are a lot like Bigfoot; people claim to have seen them but nobody has been able to offer concrete proof of their existance.

  • Anonymous

On the one hand, you guys call Obama a Socialist out to radically reform the United States a la Mao. On the other, you criticize him for taking huge sums of cash from Wall Street. How can both happen?

I’ll give you a clue. He’s not a Socialist. He’s basically like Clinton, who is considered a centrist.

  • Anonymous

Also, they waiver between calling him a dunce that can’t string two words together without a teleprompter and in the same sentence accuse him of being an evil genius whose only goal is to destroy America. You can’t have it both ways. In a side note: I WISH he were as liberal as they accused him of being.

Also, GavinsPapa, your analogy is lacking — President Obama was ELECTED, so basically, the American people asked him to come into the house and try to clean up the mess the conservatives made out of the kitchen with the wild party they had over the first few years of this century. Many of the conservatives act like he took the White House by force - the SCOTUS didn’t appointed him to the office like they did the last president.

  • Anonymous

BTW — apologies for the typo GavinsPapa!

  • Anonymous

President Obama is the least liberal Democratic president since World War II, and presumably the least liberal since Woodrow Wilson.

President George W. Bush was the most conservative president in the post-war era.

So Obama is a hard hard lefty?

    1. Bailouts of the banks.
    2. Bailout of GM/Chrysler.
    3. Extend Bush tax cuts.
    4. Extend Patriot Act.
    5. Expand Afghanistan war.
    6. Expand military engagement in Libya.
    7. Expand drone attacks in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen…
    8. NDAA.
    9. Sign into law healthcare law that was modeled after 90′s Republican ideas.
    10. Assassination of an American “terrorist.” (<–in quotes for a reason.)
    11. Table EFCA.
    12. Table immigration reform.

    I could go on…;)

Do those sound like things Dennis Kuccinich or Bernie Sanders would do?

Wasn`t GWB a dunce, a monkey, a chimp, a pretender whose degree was bought by his papa, a drunkard, an idiot, while at the same time he was the evil genius who engineered the destruction of the Twin Towers.

Let`s face it, if America was as racist as the Democrats paint Republicans to be, Obama would have never been elected.

And if America was just half as smart as they think they are, Obama would have never been elected.

And if Americans  were less gullible, Obama would have never been elected.

Can you imagine any presidential candidate in the past saying: I am going to screw your country out of existence by FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGING IT – elected, when Americans still had brains.

  • Anonymous

The National Journal determined Obama to be the most liberal senator in 2007.  But then again Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer, Bernie Sanders, etc. are all moderates.

  • Anonymous

LIE, how about Manchin? or the two dozen or so conservative democrats in the house? they are there and we know it nor do we condemn them except in anger at their actions we don’t exclude them like the Conservaligious Rethuglicans exclude there voices of opposition to the cult of conservatism and corporate toady hoodisms.

Try voted with republicans search and you find them and the proof of their actions.

What a slimy toad you are.

Mainstream constitutes something that is normal, average, central, general, typical, regular, standard, conventional. Leaves the question, what position one has when denouncing mainstream?

Better listen to “Extremist Media” to get your view on what you perceive as ‘reality’.

Sorry GavinsPapa, in another article you claimed Obama was only elected because Democrats who voted for him are all racists who want to hide that.

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/mitt-romney-was-once-a-democrat/#comment-428573485

So people who support him are racists, while racists don’t exist in enough numbers to stop him becoming presidents, hm? Sorry, you can’t have it both ways.

You’re wrong. Obama was elected because he was the better of the two choices put before the American people and insulting people still isn’t a good way to win an argument :).

No, not even any pretend ones.

    No it doesn’t.

Because the right itself has moved sooooo far right that even a moderate looks like a liberal to those on the right.  As an example, Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive, yet Obama is a commie pacifist anti business liberal.  Whereas in reality he is as middle of the road as any politician ever.

  • Anonymous

Im sorry, stimulus, porkulus, auto bailout, healthcare bill, etc. Those are about as liberal as they come.

  • Anonymous

GM is alive (far from profitable) but alive (and at what cost to the taxpayer, and ownership was converted to his union buddies). I point you to the stimulus, the healthcare bill, the auto bailout, all liberal policies.

Your post would be so much interesting if it had any truth to it.  The golf rant has been proven false, so you go to borrowing from China.  Who was it that put two wars on the credit card?  Who decided it was a good idea to give tax breaks to the wealthy when we were in two wars?  Who was it that drove the economy into the ditch?  If you are going to make a post try to not use the Limbaugh Newsletter as your source for information, it will prevent you from looking so, how should I put it, ill informed.

There are moderate republicans. Romney is a moderate. The problem is there are two types of republicans anyone running has to appeal to. The moderate wealthy educated republicans and the tea baggers in the bible belt. Its hard to keep both happy in a primary. You have to run to the right, they all do. Whats really going to piss republicans off is when Romney runs straight into the middle during the general election, because he’s going to have to to have a prayer to win. He needs the independents, and far right tea party rhetoric wont work on them.

Limbaugh, there was no more of a milquetoast candidate than Reagan.  Reagan would never get the nomination  nowadays.  He was waaaay moderate compared to the modern day fundamentalist conservatism.  Nominate a candidate that the majority can relate to and you can win an election.

When were born? Was it yesterday?

The entire country knows the terms under which Republicans will work with the Democrats:
First- do every thing the republican way.
Second- all compromises are as follows democrats get to vote yes on republican bills.
Third- all disputes will be resolved in a republican manner and in favor of republicans.
Fourth- democratic amendments are not allowed.
Fifth- democrats with draw all ethics complaints.
Sixth- democrats give up all staff and remit staff funding to the RCCC.
Seventh- all the democratic leadership must resign and reorganize as directed by republican leadership.
Eighth- democrats will submit resolutions of impeachment as drafted by republicans.
Ninth- will surrender all collected campaign funds to republican challengers for their seats.
Tenth- democratic candidates for republican held seats will withdraw their names from the ballots in all states

    etc.etc.etc.

Yes republicans would love to work with democrats, if democrats surrender the nation to them.

    1) He NEVER “took over the auto companies”, THE CONGRESS voted to give them a LOAN which they have mostly paid back.
    2) HE NEVER “gave Chrysler away to Fiat”. It’s called the FREE MARKET. Companies sometimes buy other companies (see Bain Capital for an example…)
    3) He NEVER “took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac”. TARP happened under BUSH.
    4) “…we are giving billion of dollars every year.” To who? For what? Can you be any more vague in you outrage?
    5) “… and there is Obamacare he stole half a trillion dollars from medicare.” He took $500B that would have went to the Health Care Companies to deliver Medicare benefits (who had a 30% overhead) and returned that money to the Government (which has a 7% overhead) which ACTUALLY made Medicare more solvent.
    6) “ILLEAGLE”? To quote WiddleBabyDanielson: “OMG. He made our national bird sick?” That’s just hilarious!

But other than those FEW minor corrections, I can see why you would hate this fictionalized version of the President. Bill Maher nailed it when he said that republicans just make up a fictionalized version of President Obama (Barack X) and pour all their hate into that person. Who care’s about reality?

Obama (Liberal Marxist Communist) or Reagan (Greatest Conservative President EVER)
Drone strikes against terrorists vs. selling weapons to terrorists in exchange for hostages.
Announces Presidential bid in Springfield, Ill. (where Abraham Lincoln delivered his “House Divided” speech in 1858) vs. Announces Presidential bid in Philadelphia, Miss. (where 3 civil right workers were MURDERED by the KKK and were NEVER convicted and talked about “States Rights”)
More deportations of illegals in a 3 years than GWB did in 8 years vs. Blanket Amnesty for ALL illegal immigrants.
Cut taxes for EVERYONE vs. raising taxes 12 times.
Sending in SEAL Team 6 to kill bin Laden vs. “Cutting and Running” from Lebanon with your tail between your legs.
Making compromises with your ALLIES (aka Going on an “Apology Tour”) vs. making compromises with your ENEMIES (aka “Single-handedly Destroying Communism”)

So if President Barack Obama is “Liberal Marxist Communist’ like you say, what does that make good ole’ Ronald “Weapons for Hostages trading, KKK code-word giving, Amnesty signing, Tax raising, Cutting and Running, Soviet-meeting” Reagan?

Moderation is at the result of compromising on liberal and conservative viewpoints which works for politicians but makes a mess of the country.  The left wing Democratic movement of more and bigger government augmented by the me too Republican party has produced a humongous debt, regulations by the pant load and where was the compromise by the Democrats fora less intrusive more limited government.  The moderates are the dorks seeking universal approval so they can get elected and continue the march into finical oblivion. The conservatives are much too theocratic and the liberals are simply dreaming.  A party of consistency protecting the individual rights of the citizenry and limiting government to that task while taking away the government’s ability ot tax is the only road out of this chaos in a sustainable manner.  As long as we keep voting in people to confiscate our earnings and spend on their political pandering we will see more short term politicians of both existing parties trying to get away with it just one more time.

Given Mitt Romney’s status as the presumptive nominee along with his history of being more in tune with Giuliani’s politics in the past, I was a little surprised the former major was so reticent to endorse Romney.

Many of us recall the rumors that “none of the candidates liked Mitt Romney” during the 2008 campaign. I wonder if Rudy was one of those who grew to dislike Mitt over time.

You don’t run a major venture capital firm without developing some pretty sharp elbows. I think we are kidding ourselves if we do not acknowledge that Romney has a sarcastic (or prickly) demeanor that he tries to keep under wraps. Even Sarah Palin has felt its sting.

    Bail Outs: George W Bush
“Obamacare”: Based on Romneycare and Newt Gingrich’s idea of mandate being a good thing. It was a compromise. Before the great recession started health care was a big deal and placed high on voters minds.

Bin Laden: Obama gave the orders to go into Pakistan. Bush…”I don’t really care about Bin Laden”

Uh..what? Progressivism is not a word. You need a dictinary. You seem to think liberal and progressive are bad words but if you pick up a dictionary, you will find out that the Dictionary has a liberal bias lol
