A defiant and downright jolly John Boehner (R-OH) spoke to the press on Thursday morning in support of the Ryan-Murray budget deal, and took several additional shots at “outside” conservative groups, such as Heritage Actions and FreedomWorks, that have vocally opposed the deal.
“I just think that they’ve lost all credibility,” Boehner said. “They pushed us into this fight to defund Obamacare and to shut down the government. Most of my members know that wasn’t exactly the strategy I had in mind. But if you’ll recall the day before the government reopened, one of these groups stood up and said, ‘Well, we never thought it would work.’ Are you kidding me?”
“I’m as conservative as anybody around this place,” Boehner continued. “All the things that we’ve done over the three years that I’ve been speaker have not violated any conservative principle, not once.”
“There just comes to a point when some people step over the line,” Boehner said, in reference to the groups. “You know, when you criticize something and you have no idea what you’re criticizing, it undermines your credibility.”
When asked if he was commanding the groups to “stand down,” Boehner shrugged and said, “I don’t care what they do.”
