China Critic Trump Has His ‘Donald J. Trump Signature Collection’ Suits Made…In China

Oh, Department of Delicious Irony. The self-professed possible potential presidential candidate Donald Trump, who’s been a harsh critic of buying products from China, has his “Donald J. Trump Signature Collection” suits and ties manufactured–yep–in China. As Salon’s Justin Elliott discovered, the clothing line that “promises to provide ‘the pinnacle of style and sophistication’ and ‘the necessities to be boardroom ready all of the time’” comes with a “Made in China” tag.

Donald Trump has emerged in recent years as the nation’s foremost China basher, going after the Asian superpower for undervaluing its currency and for taking American manufacturing and jobs. So it’s at least ironic — and at most an example of gross hypocrisy — that Trump’s own line of men’s wear, the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection, is manufactured in China.

Elliott notes that Trump–who truly insists he may in fact perhaps be running for president–”has long complained about Chinese currency ‘manipulation’ and has called for a large tariff on imports from China” and has urged Americans to buy fewer products made in China. Maybe that’s why other parts of the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection are made in Mexico and Bangladesh?

Hates China stealing from America, but he is sending jobs overseas.

    What a Great American.

integrity isn’t something this moron is familiar with

Trump’s original statements concerning China was that he has a lot of business dealings with them as manufacturing in this country has experienced a mass exodus to China due to cost considerations based on their ( China’s manipulation of their currency.

He also touted his long standing, adversarial business relationship with them as one of his unique strenghths if he were elected if he were elected president.

Ulike the crook you libs love to love in our White House today, who refuses to disclose even when court ordered, our next president ( Trump ) has nothing to hide and reads just like an open book……an audio one at that.

How much is Trump paying you?

To be fair and as the linked piece notes, the clothing company licenses the Trump name and he’s not actually involved in the manufacturing. Though obviously embarrassing, it’s sort of on par with Kathie Lee’s sweatshop scandals and though she took a short-term PR hit, she seems to have escaped unscathed.

Apples and hammers really. Kathie Lee didn’t disclose. Trump stated from the very first news conference that he has many business dealings with China, giving him a one of a kind perspective on how they operate. He did not disclose each of his dealings ( Trump Ties ), but he happily did disclose much more than he is required to.

@BMG: I’m sure Trump has some dealings with China and because of his stature, unlike most people who use Chinese manufacturing facilities, he may have even met some of the country’s political leaders, but as the linked article notes, he licenses his name to Phillip-Van Heusen.

As their website lists, they own several lines and they license many others, so he’s not involved in the manufacturing process. I may be mistaken, but I don’t think Trump actually manufactures anything and I assume most of his dealings with China involve real estate, golf courses, casinos and beauty pageants because as far as I know, it’s the only areas in which his company is directly involved.

“Donald Trump has emerged in recent years as the nation’s foremost China basher, going after the Asian superpower for undervaluing its currency and for taking American manufacturing and jobs. ”

Kind of like when Barry bashed the money flowing into elections and then reneging on an agreement with McCain to accept public funds so he could raise more money.

Kind of like Barry blasting lobbyists and then hiring some into his administration.

Turns out Trump really is a Republican.

  • WCinWI

So then you are accepting that our corporate tax structure needs to be changed so that manufacturing will be brought back to the US? Awesome. :)

Though it really doesn’t mean a lot and I’m just skimming as I listen to Bernanke, but in addition to the fact that PVH manufactures their products in China and 54 other countries, if I’m reading their 2009 Annual Report correctly only 23% of their 1014 factories are in compliance with the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” and the “United Nations’ Framework on Business and Human Rights”.

Note: I don’t know why 2009 is the most recent AR on the company’s site.

    Who cares about the UN?

To be fair, my generalization could be considered misleading…

According to the 2009 Annual Report, 23% were in compliance; 8% requires follow-up; 64% are in remediation; 3% not in compliance and 2% are red-flagged.

So, my “only 23%… are in compliance” could be an unfair generalization and if you look at their chart, PVH has made strides to improve the situation and one would assume that the numbers are even better today.

Actually exactly like that. And like Palin griping about campaigning instead of governing. Well, pretty much like the lot of them.

Apparently Phillips-Van Heusen because according to their own report, their company “code of conduct” and “core principles” are designed to align with the international guidelines.

  • Probably NOT wrong

    No big deal here.

Some of you NutJob lefties better take a look at the Labels in your

And I don’t give a damn how much you paid.

As I mentioned in my first couple of comments, PVH is the company that actually manufactures and markets the clothes. Most likely, they’ve paid a fee to use the Trump name for a set term and though he and his people may have been treated to a fashion show, he probably has no other involvement.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

IOW: The post was about Trump’s clothing line and while I’ve pointed out that the “made in China” label is embarrassing and he can’t really be blamed, I brought up the problems with Kathie Lee’s clothing line. So while I was listening to Bernanke’s presser, I checked to see if the Trump line has similar problems.

I haven’t heard Trump being critical of buying products made in China. Perhaps I missed it. Link, anyone?

We may own some Chinese goods, but we don’t manufacture them overseas, put our name on them and hawk them for top dollar to Americans, just cause we can. Nope this is just another example of Trumpocrisy.

You haven’t heard about his proposed tariff?
    That’s the way Trump works.
He makes sense if you don’t listen to him.

  • m_mayhem

Not surprised by this at all, only question is whether this a$$clown is a bigger hypocrite or liar.

  • Nobodys_Stooge

His goods are made in China and yet his Wife and children were manufactured in the former West Germany. I guess for certain possessions he prefers precision engineeering with technicians over the age of 9 years old.

Donald please, as a favor to us all Run. Run Donald run. Run, run, run. I’m tired of the good old red, white and blue. Lets get that T rump logo on the White House, The Lincoln Memorial, and for Gods sake lets Trump up Air Force One. Maybe some chandliers and board room!.

  • Eshvish

Trump has confessed he has made a “lot of money” in China.

He just can’t stand anybody else can afford the products from there, so he wants a 25% tariff tax on Chinese products.

When an ultra-rich guy claims he makes a lot of money from some source, you bet he’ll do anything to prop it up. He is just a lousy lair to conceal his agenda.
