Chris Matthews ‘Smells Birtherism About’ Rick Perry: He’s ‘Michele Bachmann With Better Hair’

video

Texas governor Rick Perry has been a presidential candidate for about three days, but it’s been more than enough time for Chris Matthews to make clear he isn’t buying what Perry is selling. Tonight on the program, Matthews discussed his chances with radio personality Jim Hightower and reporter Wayne Slater, telling them that he believed he “smells birtherism about this guy” and agreed with a comparison made to Donald Trump.

While Matthews had some sharp words about Perry, Hightower was by far the most strident in his attacks, as he had once lost an election to Perry years ago. With that in mind, Matthews asked Hightower whether “anything will stop this guy,” to which Hightower confidently answered, in a word, yes. “The higher the monkey climbs, the more you see his ugly side,” he explained, finding it difficult for Perry to hide for much longer that he is “Michele Bachmann with better hair” (Hightower came to the program, it should be noted, with a quiver full of hair jokes). The Bachmann comparison ended up being the friendliest one on the program– Matthews closed the segment comparing Perry to Bull Connor.

Matthews then chided Perry for attacking Ben Bernanke, a Bush appointee who, according to Matthews, “is saving this country’s bacon,” but the fighting spirit, pointed out Slater, was part of what made him so formidable. “Part of Donald Trump’s appeal… was that he at least was saying ‘put me in the ring with this guy, Obama,’” Slater explained. After an exchange where Hightower tossed in the line “he puts the ‘goober’ in gubernatorial,” Matthews jumped in on the fighting spirit, bringing up Perry’s “big black cloud” comment and stating, “I smell birtherism about this guy.” “It’s about the nature of the person who is president,” and not the issues, Matthews argued.

Needless to say, if Matthews is hanging on to the “big black cloud” comment for essentially calling Perry a birther in a segment where a panelist compared him to Donald Trump– a comment that MSNBC is getting major backlash for taking out of context– he’s going to have some explaining to do come tomorrow.

“The higher the monkey climbs, the more you see his ugly side,

Gee, I wonder what the response would be if Perry had said that about Obama.

Jim Hightower is a loony tune who Perry beat for political office. He’s a well-known commodity in the state.

In the late 1960s, he worked in Washington, D.C., as legislative aide to Senator Ralph Yarborough. After managing the presidential campaign of former Senator Fred R. Harris of Oklahoma in 1976, he returned to Texas to become the editor of the magazine The Texas Observer. His first run for office was for the Democratic nomination for the Texas Railroad Commission (which regulates the oilindustry), which he lost. Hightower was elected Agricultural Commissioner in 1982, serving in that capacity until 1991. His tenure was noted for fostering organic production, alternative crops, direct marketing by small farmers, strong gross materials[clarification needed] regulations, and other programs[citation needed]. During that time, he also became a leading national spokesman for populist andprogressive Democrats and endorsed Jesse Jackson for president in 1988. He was defeated in a 1990 upset by Republican Rick Perry, later governor. Three of Hightower’s aides at the Agriculture Commissioner, Mike Moeller, Pete McRae and Billie Quicksall were indicted and convicted on bribery charges related to Hightower’s fund raising activities. The plot, which contributed to Hightower’s defeat, involved shaking down seed dealers under the departments oversight to make contributions to Hightower’s reelection campaign. [1]During the 1992 presidential election, he supported the candidacy of Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa. After Harkin dropped out, Hightower supported Jerry Brown and cast his superdelegate vote for GovernorBill Clinton, the presumptive nominee, at the Democratic National Convention.Soon after Clinton was elected, Hightower became a critic of the president, criticizing him for his acceptance of corporate soft money contributions, his support of NAFTA, his health care plan, and his refusal to crack down on “corporate welfare”, as well as what Hightower viewed as inadequate efforts at ending unemployment and poverty. In 2000, he joined with talk show host Phil Donahue and actress Susan Sarandon to co-chair the presidential campaign of Ralph Nader. He also appeared at Nader’s “super-rallies” and stumped across the country for him. After the disputed outcome of the 2000 election, Hightower voiced the opinion that it was Vice President Al Gore himself, and not Nader, who was responsible for Gore’s loss to Governor George W. Bush.[citation needed] Although he issued no endorsement of any candidate during the 2004 presidential primaries, he spoke and wrote approvingly of Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, calling him a “clear populist with a lifelong history of unambiguous advocacy of populist principles.”[2] Once Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts won the nomination, Hightower endorsed him and urged fellow progressives to work for his election, saying, “I don’t care if he’s a sack of cement, we’re going to carry him to victory.”[3] During this election, he also campaigned in support of the U.S. Senate bid of Doris “Granny D” Haddock, a friend and fellow activist who was running as a Democrat against incumbent Republican New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg.

Didja “get” that, Chrissie? Hightower’s aides were convicted of “shaking down” seed companies to contribute to his re-election campaign? A campaign he lost for Agriculture Commissioner- to Rick Perry!

He has supported Jesse Jackson, Tom Harkin, Ralph Nader, Dennis Kucinich and that “sack of cement” John Kerry for President- I think that says it all.

Like I’ve been saying since Sunday when Perry announced…  the DNC attacks/talking points have been delivered and received by the political and media hacks.  They are dutifully bleating them, one by one, day by day.  What an embarrassment these people are to the group of decent, old school democrats still left in this country.  Although I believe most of those people now self identify as independents.  What a disgrace the MSM and lunatic leftists have become.

  • ProudofTexasAshamedofPerry

Ah, the birth certificate story that will not die.  From the start, MSNBC covered this issue more than any other network, and continues to cover it long after everyone except the far left has lost interest.

What a sad commentary on Obama that this is the “achievement” that his supporters are most confident in defending.

But may I remind Mr. Matthews, that a US birth certificate is a requirement for the Presidency, but not qualification.

Imo, Matthews and the rest of those white pseudo-liberals on MSNBC, are itching to start a race war. Why else would they try to convince blacks that non-pseudo-liberals are out to get them,  virtually every day of the week? Imo, also, white pseudo-liberals purposely instill fear into people of color, to keep them in line, so to speak. Look what happens to blacks when they dare to  think for themselves. Condi Rice was mocked and ridiculed by the white pseudo-liberals, when she escaped the white pseudo-liberal ‘plantation’ mindset. Last, but not least, why do white pseudo-liberals believe they have to ‘control’ blacks? Why not treat people of color as equals, instead of slaves?

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

I hate to be contrary, but it’s actually James Slater of the Dallas Morning News who makes reference to the “dark cloud” — not “black cloud”, but “dark cloud” — and it’s in regards to something Governor Perry said at his revival meeting in Texas, not on the stump today. (Matthews’ setup question begins at 6:00 and Slater goes into his answer around 6:20)

I may have missed it, but I didn’t actually hear Matthews say anything about any type of cloud and the “dog whistle” to which Slater refers seems to be the doom and gloom outlook of Tea Party activists and I have no reason to think that he claims the statement had racial overtones.

  • http://Mediaite.com Frances Martel

Yes, he was mentioning what Slater said additionally, but I find it hard to comprehend the “I smell birtherism” comment outside of the context of bringing up the “big black cloud”– though Matthews also points out, somewhat in passing, the “we need a President who is passionate about America” comment, which very easily could fit into that thesis.

Either way, I think the 1-2 punch of linking Perry to Donald Trump and practically calling him a birther is some damning stuff, though you make a good point that the comment didn’t have to necessarily be rooted in the one out-of-context comment. And I doubt Matthews will backtrack his semi-birtherism attack because of that one clip.

  • NeverWrong

Never has there been a candidate for President who has the lowly, sissified, girlieboy Dumblibs knees knocking while they crap in their shorts, like Gov. Perry. OBUMbler is beside himself not knowing what to do. Out on the stump speech bus tour at our expense (what a rotten, lowdown bum) he sounds like a little kid asking a girl’s father if he can take his daughter out on a date since he just got his drivers license. Hussein has to go next year. We have to take America back. Obumbler is in way over his head Time to get back to organizing little communities on Chicago’s southside.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

The “birtherism” reference in Matthews’ setup follows the clip of Gibbs commenting on Perry’s quip about the President’s love of country. Patriotism is another form of bona fides.

In other comments I’ve faulted both Sharpton and Shultz (thread) for their (mis)use of the quote, but in the above clip, I’m just not hearing it from Chris Matthews.

I see another MSNBC apology coming. These guys are losing their minds over Perry. What to know who the GOP primary frontrunner is? Just tune in to MSNBC for 10 minutes to see who they are lying and yelling about.

My guess is, Matthews sees “birtheirsm” in anyone who is right of him. Or racism. It’s a disgusting way to run a show, but that is why Matthews is consistently close to last in the cable news ratings.

…. “The higher the monkey climbs, the more you see his ugly side,

…. Gee, I wonder what the response would be if Perry had said that about Obama.

Seriously? I have heard your people say much worse about your President.

All you GOP supporters out there need to start looking at what damage your last leader did to your beautiful country. It is no good blaming Obama for things which clearly took place under the last administration. If anything the GOP should be hiding under a stone somewhere hoping that they dont get called out to explain what they did with all the money during their time in office.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mam646 Angie Sharp

If the damage was so bad, why is it that Obama made it worse and not better?  Why is he following a lot of his foreign policies which he deemed bad when he was candidate Obama? Yeah, Bush was a RINO about a lot of things, but if was THAT bad, you’d think a LEADER would want to correct it instead of making his term feel more like Bush’s 3rd on STEROIDS.

  • Mia

I swear to God the biggest “birther” on this planet is Chris Matthews. He never shuts up about the issue! I would bet if you went back and looked at all of Chrissy’s shows since 2008 election you would find a SUBSTANTIAL amount of time was spent on this NON-ISSUE. For God’s sake his pathetic ‘promo” is about the same damn issue. I don’t care if Obama was born on Jupiter – and I am CERTAIN HE WASN’T BORN IN A MANGER – he SUCKS as president. The birth card is the race card of the 2012 election. put it away already!

The reason they keep bringing the Birth issue up is because if they actually had to discuss the real issues and problems with this country – they know Obama’s got nothing.

Maybe you forget, or just didn’t know (more likely you just like to ignore this)., but the fact is that we were losing around 70,000 jobs a month, and the stock market had tanked in a way 2nd only to the great depression before Bush left office.

pres. Obama has not made things worse.( actually things were slowly getting better before the tea-party took over the house of representatives and stalled any and all jobs bills from coming t a vote) he just hasn’t performed some “magical movie black guy thing” many seem to have been deluded into thinking was possible without strong support from activist constituents.

Question. here are the jobs bills an or ‘pro-growth’  agenda from the house of reps? it’s been 18 mos. can’t blame Obama for stalling .. he hasn’t vetoed any jobs bills.. it’s the congress’s job to come up with legislation.

  • Jerry Baustian

Barack Obama was not to blame for the housing bubble, and after about six years of expansion the US economy was due or even overdue for a slowdown.

But, Barack Obama was responsible for the economic expectations he created; and from late spring 2008 he was the Democratic nominee and the likely winner of the November election. So every one of his campaign promises was factored into the expectations of individuals and the owners and managers of businesses. All the tax increases, the new medical care taxes and mandates, the environmental regulations — everything he promised to do once in office was factored into decisions made months before the election, And the more certain his election, the more rapidly the economy crashed..
