Matthews interviewed correspondent Craig Melvin about Holder’s visit to Ferguson MO.
“That was a big deal for a lot of people,” Melvin said.
Holder visited Ferguson this week to lead an investigation into the shooting of 18-year-old black man Michael Brown, who was shot dead by a white police officer. Ferguson has been in a state of unrest since the Aug. 9 incident.
“It may be a lesson for the president, too,” Matthews said. “And I’m not usually a critic of him but I have to say that I thought that in a very positive way Eric Holder showed how you lead in this country. And a big part of leading is showing up.”
President Barack Obama has issued statements on Ferguson but has not traveled to the city. He is wrapping up a vacation in Martha’s Vineyard.
