Chris Matthews Wonders Just How Bad Is GOP’s Field Of Flawed Presidential Candidates?

Video

Chris Matthews and his Sunday morning panel evaluated the upcoming presidential election and Matthews stated about the potential Republican nominees, “every one of the top candidates comes with a potentially huge flaw.” As Matthews seemed truly interested in learning whether any of the candidates could be appealing enough to win enthusiastic support from conservatives, the panel seemed to be largely in agreement: this is a very weak Republican field of candidates.

One candidate at a time, Matthews and his panel evaluated the weaknesses of each Republican. Comparing Newt Gingrich‘s attempt to win the nomination and return to elected office as being similar to “Nixon trying to come back after Watergate” and wondering whether the wife of Governor Mitch Daniels could be seen as a First Lady after she divorced her husband and returned to re-marry him two years later, the panel was trying to put into words just how bad they thought the field of Republican candidates truly was.

Norah O’Donnell suggested President Obama is very vulnerable, yet all seemed to agree that no Republican candidate right now is getting enough people excited. Matthews concluded about the Republican line-up, “this is the movie you go to when your movie is sold out.”

The GOP needs to find a inexperienced two year Senator and former community organizer if they expect to win in 2012.

Matthews may have one of those windmill powered computers that can’t quite pick up the Internet to get the news .

    You’ve been Baracked , Chris .

If gas prices continue at $4.00 per gallon, anyone will be able to beat Obama. He needs to start saying “DRILL BABY DRILL”.

Gingrich had three wives, four tax leans is totally against the Ryan budget and supports the individual mandate.

John Huntsman is a rino who worked Obama, supported cap n trade and is considered a liberal by the far right.

    Trump is a joke.

    Ton Paul is crazy.

    Mitch Daniels has wife problems.

    Romney has a flip-flop problem.

I agree that at least on the surface that the Republican field is very weak. Or appears to be.

But I’m interested right now in a bit of a technocrat in the White House. Someone with hands on experience in making budgets and dealing with the real problem of our our debt and deficits and getting government to both work and live within its means. Governors have that knowledge.

That’s not very sexy though and Matthews is more interested in the superficial aspects of the Presidency. Style, speech making, looks. Those are not unimportant issues since the President is also Head of State and must use the bully pulpit on occasion. How he or she looks, how they come across in the age of television is – whether we like it or not – important.

But there has to be more than glitz and glammer. I think President Obama has failed miserably in this aspect. He doesn’t know how to put a budget together, he doesn’t know how to compromise, he doesn’t know how to work with the other side. He consistently mischaracterizes the opposing view and is incapable of arguing against a real view. It’s all strawman arguments.

Looks are nice on a date. But for a long term relationship you need more.

Chris Matthews loves Obama the stylist, the charisma, the looks. But style without substance isn’t what we need right now.

Be nice if Matthews was able to get beyond the, let’s say, skin (pun intended). But apparently he can’t.

Yes, but if we continue to struggle economically the voter might ask: “If you can get Bin Laden why can’t you help me get a job or help me with my gas and other bills? Just what are you focusing on?”

It’s sort of the problem that Bush Sr. faced after the success of the Persian Gulf War. Voters said, “Fine, but what about here?”

Nov 2012 was a wake-up call to the “Corrupt B-tards” of the lamestream socialist media. They realized then that the American voters were no longer swallowing their lies, distortions, fact-hiding, half-truths and shameless proselytizing for them to idolize the lunatic-left Messiah and his (and their) near endless misrepresentations about his beliefs and positions.

Never forget that “You Lie!” hussein is nothing more than an artificial creation of the lunatic-left socialist media with no more substance or depth than a Daffy Duck cartoon. Wherever there are no mirrors, no cameras and especially no teleprompters (heavy drug use significantly impairs short-term memory), hussein vanishes.

So to make sure that the voters don’t stray off the lunatic plantation in 2012, they will redouble their assault on the truth, the facts and – most of all – reality, to fool the voters back to the brain-washed days of the 2008 campaign when they had them convinced that “hopey-changey” bs would save us all. (Reality: “hope-changey” is actually the lunatic-left “Road-to-Hell”.)

The lunatic-left socialist media has no choice but to continue to try to prop-up their shallow, profane, arrogant, platitude-spouting, inexperienced, Marxist, drug-addicted, smug, elitist, narcissistic, pompous, flip-flopping, racist, anti-Semitic gas-bag who is so mentally deficient from extensive drug use he even has to plagiarize his hollow platitudes, who hijacked the nomination with fewer votes than Hillary received, and who stole the election with extensive ACORN fraud.

They have nothing else to offer.

“Norah O’Donnell suggested President Obama is very vulnerable, yet all seemed to agree that no Republican candidate right now is getting enough people excited.”

What a short memory this put and his pals have. The “out of power” party challenging an incumbent President NEVER has a front-runner selected this early.

Remember at this point leading up to the 2008 Presidential election and who was in it???
CandidatesMain article: Democratic Party (United States) presidential candidates, 2008
Barack Obama, U.S. Senator from Illinois
Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator from New York
John Edwards, former U.S. Senator from North Carolina
Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico
Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative from Ohio
Joe Biden, U.S. Senator from Delaware
Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator from Alaska
Christopher Dodd, U.S. Senator from Connecticut
Tom Vilsack, former Governor of Iowa
Evan Bayh, former Governor and U.S. Senator from Indiana

All of your pontificating means nothing, it’s still too early and as I’ve noted before, unless you’re a crack addict or a welfare recipient there really is no basis to vote for Chicago Jesus again.

Yeah, as soon as Obama made the announcement, I thought of Bush 1. But this is a little different in that bin Laden was OUR enemy, we were not defending an ally/foreign interest. And, strategically, this takes away a huge talking point from Republicans, in that they can no longer burnish their own national security credentials and bash Obama’s. That was not the case in Bush 1′s re-election bid. Finally there’s the fact that Bush 1 was severely harmed by Ross Perot, and again, this is unlikely to be a factor that will hurt Obama – any third party candidate will probably peel away Republican votes.

Anyway, of course, you’re right, all things being equal, the economy will still be the biggest challenge Obama faces in his re-election bid.

MSNBC doesn’t practice journalism….it merely practices smugness.

Chris Matthews doesn’t seem aware of this, but Republicans will be running next year on bringing a fiscal prudence and accountability to Washington, D.C. They ran on that same platform last November, and had the largest gain in seats in modern times. Next year will be more of the same.

But Matthews, and his fellow travelers in the mainstream, prefer all the embarrassing specifics relating to the disastrous Obama administration. They don’t even try to defend OBAMA’S BORROWING ANOTHER $4 BILLION EVERY DAY — THAT’S RIGHT EVERY DAY. Chris thinks if he acts smug enough, that is sufficient to counter the huge list of glaring flaws with the current administration — yet Matthews is never brave enough to try to counter these substantive criticisms. That mixture of self-righteousness and intellectual cowardice is now the trademark of MSNBC in general and Chris Matthews in particular.

Mitch Daniels is the only one who gives me concern. His wife issue may help rather than hurt since most people will be sympathetic to his forgiving nature. He’s also the only sane one in the bunch …. which could work against him with the right. He concerns me most because the independents may like him.

” And, strategically, this takes away a huge talking point from Republicans, in that they can no longer burnish their own national security credentials and bash Obama’s”

Agreed. It inoculates Obama against the “weak on defense” charge. Republicans simply can’t raise it. Although based on the current field I’m not sure any of the potential candidates can raise the issue anyway. None of them have much FP experience or cache to use.

It also symbolizes – rightly or not – to the American people that the war against terror or the threat from Islamic terror is coming to an end. Or that an end exists. That we can rest a bit, that they’re in retreat and that we can re-focus here.

Big win for the President politically, no doubt.

That’s the beauty of it, they are going to try the same tack as last time “you are racist if you don’t vote for handsome black guy” but a majority of people are actually suffering economically on some level (except the food stampers of course) and working people still slightly outnumber the “disciple leeches” on the government dole….

The group on this Matthews panel are the same folks who said about Bill Clinton’s extra curricular activities, nothing to see here folks. Just a little oral sex in the WH. Keep moving on. These are the same folks who were shocked to find out about their guy John Edwards. That’s just some basic double standard stuff. What I really don’t understand is how/why these same folks discard the resumes of the candidates on the republican side, and never once mention that Obama resume was tissue paper thin. With a thanks to timzank for the list of dem candidates, I see that all of them had many more accomplishments than Obama did. I don’t recall Fox news getting snarky about the weakness’ of each of these folks. Matthews is really a tool.

Perhaps. But a future attack will have to be directly connected to a specific policy failure by Obama. Republicans simply can’t say he’s to blame. They need to connect the dots, so to speak.

The capture/death of Bin Laden gives him some protection from a blanket charge of weakness.

Everyone – well, every fair minded person – here understood that you were just throwing out a scenario. We all do it.

If I say “If unemployment rises to 10% then x will happen” it doesn’t mean I want unemployment to rise; it just means what I think will happen if it does.

Or if I say “If Iraq blows up again, then X will happen” that doesn’t mean I want it to.

I admit that Chris Christie would be a tough candidate.

He is tough and can think on his feet among his rivals (which he said Sarah Palin could NOT do). Christie is engaged in problem solving and does not have GOP Foot-in-Mouth disease.

  • LOGICandREASON

It is quite amusing(although not unusual to me) to note that the name “Ron Paul” was not mentioned during this segment.

The fact that Ron Paul(who has officially declared his intentions) was not even mentioned(not even once) here, gives me the satisfaction I need. It seems to affirm the fear that Liberals have, knowing Ron Paul is a huge threat to Obama’s re-election in 2012; instead Chris Matthews and his panel chose not to give Ron Paul any significant media coverage, in order not to shed more light on the huge threat. They chose to address all the marital imperfections of the other Republican candidates, perhaps realizing the fact that Ron Paul has been married to the same woman for 54 years(5 years before Barack Obama was even born). Apart from the fact that Paul has been married to Carol Wells since 1957, his political views over the decades have been more consistent than any other politician or member of both houses of Congress. Human are not perfect, but no other living politician in the United States is more aligned to the US constitution and Bill of Rights than Ron Paul.

America is at a very critical period in the history of the beloved Republic, and the “ordinary citizens”(silent majority) seem to realize this fact. If Obama could do this much damage to the Republic when he had to worry about re-election, then one can only imagine how much damage he can and will do, with 4 more years in office and nothing whatsoever to loose.

We shall see what happens in the Presidential elections this time; if there was ever a time that one had to vote with their conscience, I think now is that time.

What the f___ is wrong with you? How can you call yourself an American? What decent human being would wish – actually gleefully anticipate – a terrorist attack? I have said on this site, partly in bitter jest, partly out of frustration, that there is a right-wing support for terrorism and al Qaeda, but comments like yours make me think that it’s true.

When al Qaeda attacked US, 90% of Americans rallied behind George Bush. Yes, there were outliers, and there always will be. They were wrong. By contrast, many, many, many conservatives are visibly upset – even dejected – that Obama got Osama. Andrew Napolitano said (untruthfully) that the killing of Osama was illegal. Many Republican presidential hopefuls could not even bring themselves to say Obama’s name when talking about the credit due for OBL’s demise. It’s absurd, it’s sick, and it’s wrong.

You wonder why people question whether there is some racism behind the criticism of Obama. It’s because it’s hard to conceive of any other reason for dismissing or criticizing his leadership skills or his guts in this case. Killing OBL was an unquestionably good thing for the US. People would be grateful if Bush did it (OK – Michael Moore would not be, but give the guy credit for being a consistently nutty left-winger), just as people, including myself, were grateful and happy when al Zarqawi was killed. There is no logical explanation for the anger and resentment displayed by the right toward this President. It’s not a “legitimate criticism” of him, it is an absolute inability to tolerate his presence in the White House. And so it begs the question, why so angry? Why so unaccepting? He’s lowered taxes, he’s had an aggressive foreign policy – he’s a very moderate, centrist President. So what’s the problem? There aren’t many explanations left.

Until = when. Plenty of time = words of encouragement. It’s depraved. It’s a far cry from “Eighteen months is a long time and another terrorist attack would effectively erase any political benefit Obama received from the strike that took out OBL.” One is an observation, the other is a sick wish.

You don’t read very well do you? Obviously a product of public schools.

As has been brought to your attention but ignored for partisan reasons, Tim never insinuated anything of the sort. That’s just #3 of the 10 Commandments in the Democrat Playbook:

“3. Whatever illegal and unethical thing Democrats are about to be exposed for doing, or are planning to do, instantly rush out and accuse Republicans of that exact infraction. Remember the 3 D’s. Distraction, diversion, and deception are our most powerful weapons.”

Nevertheless, I can’t help but notice the aversion Liberals have being identified as un-American, or anti-American. But in consideration of the fact that truth knows no agenda, here is the truth Liberals would rather not address.

    1. America was founded as the ‘land of the free’ and our Constitution established the nobility of the individual above the government or the masses. The government exists “at the consent of the governed,” unlike oppressive regimes that exist to the opposite. Liberals tirelessly work to reverse that value system, putting the government and the “greater good” (as they alone see it) above the individual rights to life, liberty, and ownership of property our American system guarantees.

    2. In every instance where the question arises, Liberals never miss an opportunity to ‘blame America first,’ the very essence of being “anti-American.” Liberals never miss an opportunity to stand with America’s enemies against her, promoting the notion that those enemies are somehow “victims” of America. Treason as defined in the Constitution is “giving aid and comfort to our enemy,” and there can be no denying the guilt of the anti-American Liberals in constantly committing this crime.

For anyone interested, I’ve saved a list of quotes where it’s impossible to distinguish the Democrat politicians from Al Qaida leaders as to who made the quotes. Very “anti-American” to the core.

    3. Avowed anti-Americans always gravitate to the Democrat Party for association. The Socialist Party, the Communist Party, Muslims, Marxists, and illegal immigrants find sanctuary with anti-American Democrats, as they all have the same agenda……………destroy America as it was founded and replace the American value system with a foreign style oppressive system. Democrats give aid and comfort to Muslims who work to advance the fascist Sharia law into the incompatible American system of individual liberty and human rights. And third world tyrannical dictators always are friendly with Democrats who support their efforts without hesitation.

The problem with most of you DIMS here, is that you prefer to work in the cover of darkness than to step up into the light and proudly wear your anti-Americanism like a badge. Go ahead, you’re not fooling anyone………….except maybe yourself if you consider the above list somehow “patriotic.” But I suspect most of you know who what you are…….you just don’t like discussing it openly.

Drop the nonsense of being patriotic, Dims. Just be who you are.

John Williams, over at Shadow Stats, compiles economic data for inflation and unemployment the way it used to be calculated pre-1990. Based on that data, the CPI inflation rate is over 10%, and the unemployment rate is over 15% (see charts). The Misery Index is the sum of the current inflation rate and the unemployment rate. If it were to be calculated using the older methods, the Index would now be over 25, a record high. It surpasses the old index high of 21.98, which occurred in June 1980, when Jimmy Carter was president. Most believe the height of the Index along with the Iranian hostage crisis is what caused Carter to lose his re-election bid.

    Everybody is flawed, right?

But the Republican flaws are public, right?

The Republicans have nothing to hide. Their warts are out there. A very clever mole who has hidden nearly everything about his life says, “The only people who don’t want to disclose the truth are people with something to hide.” That’s doubly true of subversives. Mr. Obama, author of the aphorism just quoted, clearly (or opaquely) has nearly an entire life to hide.

I have no reason to suspect that anybody in the Republican field has fraudulently claimed to have a black Luo tribesman as his father in order to make a racist appeal for votes and falsely defame his opponents and critics as racists.

I have no reason to suspect that any Republican candidate would or could incite mutiny or insubordination by creating a false impression of constitutional ineligibility at birth, then abuse the office to which he pretends to obstruct justice by preventing the subpoena of an original birth certificate that creates a presumption of eligibility at birth, which would have prevented the insubordination had it been disclosed as requested.

I have no reason to suspect that any Republican candidate became a foreign citizen, became constitutionally ineligible to the Office of President thereby, and (apparently concluding it DID make him ineligible) employed crooked, corrupt and seditious schemes to have foreign interests conceal the alien citizenship, for which those interests are being vastly enriched at U.S. expense.

I have no reason to think that any Republican candidate’s upbringing and life experiences caused the candidate to become a Comintern agent at an early age.

I have no reason to doubt any Republican candidate’s U.S. citizenship.

I have no reason to doubt any Republican candidate’s allegiance to the United States of America.

I have no reason to think that the actual birth parents of any Republican candidate are secret and genetically unverifiable.

have no reason to suspect that any Republican candidate has taken any oath of office with any reservation, fraudulently or in bad faith, intending the very opposite of the words spoken

For all we know, Obama has done all of these.

Investigate Obama. Expose his past. Impeach him.

It’s much simpler than that. No one believes Paul has a ghost of a chance. No one. It ain’t fear, it’s dismissal.

Could they be wrong? Sure, I suppose. Paul may be principled and consistent, but his views are not congruent with the people’s. His candidacy is doomed.

That’s wishful thinking. 9% actually equals closer to 18% and even those don’t trust some republican can step in and make things better if they don’t offer up and real solutions. The way the republicans are leaning towards crazy, there isn’t one candidate out there that will be selected that will offer real solutions that the majority of the public can get behind.

Like I said, there was no way that Bush should have been reelected, but it seems people just go with what the think will work. The sitting President gets the benefit of doubt and think he just needs more time to work it out.

Tell that to Jimmy Carter, George Bush Sr., and Gerald Ford.

I have no reason to think you are able to butter a piece of bread without cutting one of your thumbs off. For all we know, you’re down to eight fingers.

Actually it was the American electoate just coming off the perfect storm that effectively drowned the Republican party as a whole. coupled with their lack of experience regarding just who and what Barack Hussein Obama ll was, is and will forever be.

The second time around is much different. Even a left wing smart ass such as yourself has to admit that ( not out loud or anything ), just to yourself is good enough for me.

Of course it’s different this time around. Instead of a doddering old fart who changed his convictions more frequently than his tie, the ‘Licans will offer whoever emerges from a pack of loons, sleazoids, naifs, and narcolepts.

    It’ll definitely be different.

Being a good Republican, Chris is worried to death about this.

Look sport, Obama’s own Mao enthusiast spokeswoman, Anita Dunn ( Dumb ), admitted for ALL THE WORLD TO HEAR how they purposely kept their Harvard educated, post modern, community agitating, con artist, fraud of a candidate away from the press and any and all questions concerning his questionable past, present and at least for another 18 months future.

This wholely un – American practice, lying directly to the faces of the ” real ” American people and you mutt libs on a daily basis by this fraud ( Obama ) has not only proven to be counter to everything America has stood for over the past 230 years, it threatens our very lives and the future existence of our country.

You and your petty, loser, America hating ilk obviously have nothing to lose, and your jealousy makes you wish for the day America is destroyed……so a douche like YOU can really show me .

Well that day is never, ever going to come in America. Not in a million years, so sit down & shut the f**k up….or Move to Canada or France.

I’m looking for the perfect response to your latest dribblings. Something that strikes the same thoughtful tone, demonstrates an equal command of the facts, lays out the issues with admirable clarity, and is irresistible to perspicacious readers. I think I’ve got it:

    “Yo mama!”

    That should about cover it.

How, Why, is Mitch Daniels re-marriage in any way a negative? They recommitted to one another. Again, how is this a disadvantage to anyone who isn’t ruled by a soap opera or reality tv mindset (though I concede there are a lot of superficial people in the electorate)?

We have seen what a clueless, voting present community organizer has done as potus and it’s not pretty.
    Obama-One and done.

It’s still too early for the Republican party to worry about picking a candidate for the 2012 election. However the Democratic party doesn’t really have a choice in who will run for president in their party. I would rather wait and see who emerges from the Republican party before I make my decision. Someone may emerge that completely surprises everyone including the present front runners. I think the ideal candidate will have military and business experience and be a true leader with no ties to any benefactor other than the American people. The Democratic party is stuck with 1 candidate that has not improved our standard of living or the country as a whole during his presidency. The transparency that was promised was never produced and many promises were never kept.

Going green has to be done gradually over many years. You cannot expect people to run out and buy expensive electric cars they cannot afford. The poor and middle class consume the most fuel and will be hurt the most. Air Force 1 consumes over 1,000 gallons an hour of high priced jet fuel. Maybe the president should have electric motors on AF 1, see how that works out.

It’s highly likely the Republican candidate for 2012 is not even in this group. It’s really a long time from now, if that candidate comes from a ground swell.

What we need is a non-political type with a proven track record. With our political system so polarized and dysfunctional we need a nation builder that everyone can trust.

    We need David Petraeus.

Obama too recognizes that he would be a very formidable candidate. He has nominated him to be the new Director of the CIA. A brilliant stroke, that ties him up in the critical 2012 campaign year and also smears him with CIA dirt.
