On CNN’s Reliable Sources today, David Shuster (Keith Olbermann‘s substitute host at Current TV) criticized the moderators of the Fox News GOP debates, and specifically called out anchors Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly, calling them too inexperienced to moderate a political debate.
Howard Kurtz pointed out to Shuster that many of the questions asked were substantive and fair. Shuster agreed some of them were, but dismissed most of them as trying to get the candidates in gotcha moments like asking Mitt Romney if he agreed that President Obama was a socialist. He argued specifics were not asked of the candidates by any of the moderators at any of the Fox News debates.
Craig Crawford briefly interjected to express his opinion that journalists do not necessarily make good moderators. Shuster allowed that even when you do have journalists as moderators, you pick the experienced ones.
There are a lot of folks at Fox News who bring a certain level of sophistication to their understanding of politics. And I think when Fox News goes to the Megyn Kellys, the Bret Baiers, and people who don’t have much experience who haven’t covered campaigns, the result is sometimes you have these inane questions that come out and, frankly, waste everybody’s time.
Indeed. There is a certain level of sophistication you want to have when discussing important issues. Maybe not shouting-at-Andrew-Breitbart levels of sophistication, but somewhere around there.
