Fox is rapidly becoming the default news network for major breaking events. The day Michael Jackson died, everyone turned to CNN. That used to be almost a cliche: "Hey, something big just happened, turn on CNN."

That is no longer the case, and there are two possible reasons:
1. Most people are Republicans, so they turn to the Republican network (This is obviously not true, the country is split 50-50)
2. More people trust Fox to get it right than any other network.

I think ABC also deserves credit, as does Matt Laur, for being responsible and mentioning the Muslim aspect and the religious utterance Hassan made prior to the shooting. It is not politically incorrect to mention the man is a Muslim any more than it is incorrect to mention that a drunk driver who just killed someone is an illegal alien. If you choose not to include all the facts, then include none of the facts, turn out the lights and shut down the office, because you are finished.

If people like Jake Tapper, the outgoing Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopolis are any indication of how ABC runs its news operation, they will eventually become the top-rated broadcast operation just as Fox has taken over the cable race.

This could have been avoided if everyone in America would just pack a pistol, you know like they do on Army bases, you sure wouldn,t see this happening on a military base, everybody packs heat.

Well CNN went from dead to second, which I can see. People still trust CNN for hard news coverage, but with their nightly lineup of dull, dull, and more dull it is no wonder they come in last compared to the ideological division of the Fox and MSNBC evening programs.

Okay, now that I've reread the post, I see that some hours on Fox set personal records, so clearly my gut was correct about there being some kind of increase. Though I still have to wonder about the comparative percentages of increase and whether it represents a sea change in "when breaking news happens..."

I wonder how these numbers compare to the regular viewing patterns.

My gut says that Fox may have been up a bit and perhaps CNN had a higher percentage boost, but my quick thoughts are that these look a lot like the regular nightly ratings.
