Gibbs Responds to Jon Stewart’s Criticism Of Obama’s Photo Ops During BP Crisis

At today’s White House briefing, NBC’s Chuck Todd asked Robert Gibbs to respond to Jon Stewart‘s mockery of the President’s photo-op-heavy schedule during the BP Oil Spill crisis. Gibbs confessed not to have seen the segment, and while expressing admiration for Jon Stewart, he respectfully disagreed with the premise.

Perhaps the answer here isn’t to show less of the President’s fluffier, ceremonial moments, but to show more of what he does on a daily basis regarding BP. Extra pool sprays at the daily briefings Gibbs references, for example, might be an effective counter to Stewart’s complaints about visiting sports teams, but would also lead to criticism that the President is too concerned with his image.

In any case, you won’t hear this White House say “If the President doesn’t meet the Duke Blue Devils, then the oil wins.” And that’s a good thing.

Here’s the Daily Show segment to which Gibbs was responding:

    This administration has absolutely no clue when to ignore something and move on with the task at hand. The fact that Mr. Obama and Mr. Gibbs don’t realize that they don’t have to respond to every sentence every blowhard says on television and radio (and in some cases with Mr. Obama, ANY heckler present at a speech) is really pathetic.

    Chuck Todd really asked this question at a presser? Really? Is Chuck Todd that stupid?

  • taxed

    I thought Chuck Todd was suppose to be “the guy” when it comes to white hour pressers? Gibbs should have looked directly at him and said, “next question!”

    Be at ease my lib friends, Stewart will go on a rampage tonight about Palin or republicans, after a day of negative attention his show gave Obama.

    Here’s a nice run down of how O’s been right on top of things. And it’s far more than just the Duke Blue Devils.

    7 rounds of golf

    2 vacations

    8 parties

    More time spent in CA than in LA.

    @BR

    You don’t think he’s funny because he constantly insults the Right. No one likes to be made fun of even if what is being said is sometimes crazy.

    Jon Stewart is Rush Limbaugh from the looney left.

    Obama is learning the hard way that people expect leadership from the White House, not posturing or photo opps. So far, he has faltered by viewing this whole disaster from the perspective of a political campaigner. But it is already backfiring on him. Even now, if he had a choice between working with BP in solving the mess, or playing to his party base by sending the BP execs to jail in handcuffs, I fear that crisis resolution would take second place in Obama’s mind to the photo opp and class war rhetoric.

    I blame Obama for the slow clean up. I want to see the Commie out there with a mop and bucket. Now there is a job he might be qualified for. Scrub Commie Scrub!!!!
