Journalist Chris Hedges Argues With CBC’s Kevin O’Leary: ‘This Sounds Like Fox News And I Don’t Go On Fox News!’

Video

A contentious interview about Occupy Wall Street given last week on Canadian network CBC’s The Lang & O’Leary Exchange is going viral. The program’s host Kevin O’Leary went after Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Chris Hedges‘s sympathetic views of the protest, calling him a “left wing nutbar.”

“If you want to shut down every corporation, every bank, where are you going to get a job? Where are you gonna work? Where’s the economy gonna go?” O’Leary barked. Hedges calmly refuted O’Leary, telling him that Goldman Sachs didn’t manufacture anything. “They gamble, they use money, and they believe falsely that money is real as we dismantle our manufacturing base and send jobs over the border to Mexico and finally into the embrace of China.”

“I don’t usually go on shows where people descend to character assassination,” Hedges exclaimed. “If you want to discuss issues, that’s fine but this sounds like Fox News and I don’t go on Fox News!”

And the arguing just continued from there:

O’Leary: Excuse me, let’s debate the issues then. …

Hedges: You were the one who started it – you were not debating the issues.

O’Leary:[crosstalk] …I did not call you a nutcase, I called you a nutbar.

Hedges: You said [I] sounded like a leftwing nutcase .. bar

O’Leary: Yes, bar, nutbar.

Hedges: That’s an insult.

O’Leary: Are you left wing in leaning at least would you say?

Hedges: No, I would say ..

O’Leary: You’re a centrist?

Hedges: Can I finish?

O’Leary: Please.

Fox News is a phony organization, owned by Rupert Murdoch. The same guy that owns News of the world, New York Post and the Sun. Those 3 are the scum of the earth, without a doubt.

  • Anonymous

Well, I do think it speaks well of Canada that hosts calling guests “nutbars” seems to be a strange enough thing on Candian TV for it to be called out by the guest and become a headline in itself.  Here name calling on “news” shows is par for the course.

I haven’t watched CBC in years, though. They used to be the Canadian PBS, so it would be worrisome if they are trying to go the way of Fox News.

the headline should read ” a socialist journalist” but thats ok

China, Venezuela, USSR, Laos, Vietnam, Cuba, China, North Korea, East Germany, and Grenada brought to you courtesy of Marxism.

Who cares if someone is a marxist? A Marxist works for the people, not those in power. I’m a marxist I think. 99% of America is now Marxist according to you.

    I SUPPORT SOCIALISM AND MARXISM.

I say we stop calling them anything else, it’s time to rise up against the rich who have taken too much power and it’s time to spread that wealth back to the people.

You have to realize, this OWS thing is a country changing thing, not like the pathetic Tea Party turds. Tea Party will be known for Sarah Palin, lol.

  • NDanielson

You Marxists chose to define waterboarding as “torture”. Fair enough. I do think there is ample room here to describe you Marxists as treasonous.

To avoid the abuses of the English law (including executions by Henry VIII of those who criticized his repeated marriages), treason was specifically defined in the United States Constitution, the only crime so defined. Article III Section 3 delineates treason as follows:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War
against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and
Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony
of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

Proponents of Marxism, are fighting for and advocating for the advancement and implementation of the political and economic structure of our enemies. Is that correct? What is your advocacy and effort for, but for the purpose of overthrowing and/or replacing our system of governance and economic structure with the political and economic structure of our enemies? How are you not an enemy of this country? A desire to adopt their system of governance gives them Aid and Comfort, doesn’t it? You are openly advocating for it!

Is that why you leftists despise the Declaration of Independence as much as the US Constitution?

in which the concept of class struggle plays a central role in

The Sino split is irrelevant to me, Shogun83.  Because any form of communism is anti- human, freedom, and individual, at it’s very core.

The idea that a political class of elites should control or plan the lives of others by force is offensive to me.

I value freedom of expression, thought, and opportunity.  And I even value that you have an open forum to disagree or engage me.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure how communism is ‘anti-human’.  The others I get, but ‘anti-human’ seems a bit of a stretch for me.

“The idea that a political class of elites should control or plan the lives of others by force is offensive to me.”
    I won’t disagree there.

The Sino Split may not matter much to you but it’s a pretty big deal to anyone that actually wants to understand modern Communism.  Blanket generalizations don’t serve discourse, at all.

Hedges, ”wealthy”? A former writer for the New York Times, 7 years reporting from war zones such as El Salvador and the Middle East, brilliant author of important books such as “War Is What Gives Us Meaning”, educated at Harvard Divinty School, a principled active life dedicated to service, alleviating suffering and pain for humanity, and you have the blunt stupidity to puke the Know Nothing platitudes of Beck and the illiterates that inhale the proto-fascist nonsense on Fox? Shame on your sorry ass, take a walk amongst the “group thinkers” at Occupy Wall Street. They’ll listen to your inanities, and then initiate the long process of schooling you, perhaps you may learn, journey higher to the intellectual level where even you may actually quote Marx to indicate that you can read, think, even.

    World English Dictionary

    Marxism  (ˈmɑːksɪzəm)

    — n
the economic and political theory and practice originated by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels that holds that actions and human institutions are economically determined, that the class struggle is the basic agency of historical change, and that capitalism will ultimately be superseded by communism.

Almost all of that debt is the result of stupid Republicans.  Even the money Obama spends is spent in an effort to fix all of the damage Republicans did.  Yet somehow, your leaders are able to convince you that somebody else is to blame.  You’re an amazingly stupid person.

Even more ridiculous: where did I say we defeated communism? Please cite. As I am stating we have them in our midst, clown. Did that go over your too clever head? The phrase the enemy of my enemy is my friend is a proverb
that advances the concept that someone who is the enemy of your enemy
is therefore your friend. It further means that because two parties have
a common enemy, one can use the other to advance their goals. Often
described as an Arabic proverb, there is also an identical Chinese proverb.

In foreign policy, it’s a doctrine commonly used to interact with a
significant enemy through an intermediary rather than through direct
    confrontation.

Examples throughout history are common, such as longtime enemies Britain and France uniting against Germany during World War I, the Western capitalist democracies aiding the Soviet Union following the Nazi invasion during World War II, or U.S. support for anti-Communist dictatorships during the Cold War.

You liberals will side with any enemy to protect your Barry IN A HEART BEAT. Won’t you? Lenin would laugh in your face for the useful idiots you cannot help yourselves from being.

Accurate quotes are significant. The “..perhaps you may learn, journey higher to the intellectual level where even you may actually quote Marx…” etc,. is a specific reference to turk281′s need to progress educationally, beyond the demonstrated infantile disorders of the nonsense he writes, NOT the “bunch of people with “higher intellect” you woefully misquote. A little attention to the actual text will indicate some basic common sense. Think before you write.

That just because Barry 0bama is a failure, it does not make those who disagree with him racist? Did you know that? Hey did you know that every Arab terrorist was Muslim?

”Spread the wealth back to the people”?? When were”the people” ever wealthy? When they were buying homes they couldn’t afford on loans they could never pay back? Seems to me the wealth would go back to the people when the government stops taking it away from them. The “people” are not monolithic, nor are we mind-numbed enough to believe socialism actually would work. We have enough examples of it not working to assuage whatever doubts we have.
And, if you truly do support socialism, great. Move. This country is a constitutional republic, not a socialist one. You wanna surround yourself with some hygienically challenged, bongo-beating miscreants, you go right ahead,, but you loom far more pathetic than Wasilla Barbie ever did.

That would be WW2 and the Cold war? Stopping the spread of National Socialism on the one hand, with its murderous racism, and International Coomunism on the other hand, with its mass killings and genocide. An erudite point. Odd that so many Marxists continue to wave that tattered little red book around, hoping and praying the dialectic moves them to a utopian future, not realizing that the future happened already, that the Communist Manifesto failed like so many other manifesto’s  do, and that the only revolution in this country has already happened some 240 or so years ago.

Wasn’t Sino-Communism adapted from Soviet Communism? Absolutely. It then adapted again, realizing it was going bankrupt, and it brought in capitalism. What you have now is something approaching Italian style Fascism in China, with the government and military controlling the markets. But its root was the same, so there is no “intellectual dishonesty”.

There’s no way to have Marxism when all of the money flows to the corporations (in this case, to the banks). That’s what’s happening under Obama. It’s known as capitalism.

And collectivism as practiced by National and International Socialists and Communists, leads to terrible conformity, oppression and genocide that would make the trail of tears pale in comparison. Work camps on the one hand and Gulags on the other. Collectivism buries the individual, so its central tenant is against personal liberties (like property rights). It is antithetical to everything that this republic was founded on and for.

Chris Hedges won a Pulitzer prize for his coverage of Al-Qaeda in Europe. He was a war correspondent for 20 years for the NYT. He witnessed conflict first-hand in Sarajevo, Venezuela, and many other places first hand. The NYT attempted to censure him from writing anything about the War in Iraq after a speech he gave at a college against it during the buildup to war, noting the fear-mongering and hysteria the government and right wing was spitting out, he left instead. Chris Hedges is not a typical anything, and his intellectual prowess and lucidity is far beyond anything on corporate media. I guess you can’t blame Kevin O’Leary for freaking out and resorting to name calling after Chris lays on the table the hideous reality of what corporations are doing to the US and the world. The only thing typical here, is your response as an illiterate troglodyte.

Ah, Trevor, you are a tactless individual, probably making up for some personal lack somewhere. Now, where were we..Ah, yes, part 1 of “schooling imbeciles” starring you.
     1. Wealth is not “redistributed” by republicans, but by the market, unless the government intervenes in said market (like the housing market) or banking loans (see Fannie/Freddie) both managed by banks with ties to the current administration. So Dodd (D) and Barney Frank(D) are as responsible for our current mess as any republican you can name, probably more so, as they were warned of the impending collapse of the housing bubble long before it burst. We can draw a lesson; wherever government gets into bed with the private sector, it generally suffers as a consequence (see Tarp).
     2. Obama has adapted a Keynesian approach, spending lavishly monies we do not have on things like Solyndra (dumb) or Sunpower (dumber) while neglecting oil and nuclear infrastructures. The difference is oil and nuclear have a history of working, but they are messy, solar neither pollutes nor works on the scales necessary.
     3. Point out the lie in my previous post, or admit you are an idiot. Where is the Democrats budget for this year? Or last? Don’t have one? Then we can’t say they want a balanced budget, can we? We can also say the Democrats who were in charge of Congress and the Senate but did not pass any budget whatsoever, are more responsible than Bush, as everyone knows,(even complete idiots) that Congress is in charge of the spending in our Republic. Please try to understand, you don’t offend me, you amuse me, as most self-righteous fanatics of the religious persuasion do. I would urge you to learn a bit about this nation before opening your mouth and looking more ignorant of its recent history.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=9126994 Josie Clairmont

Lenin didn’t create the foundations of socialism nor develop the philosophy of it. He simply developed the strategy of using a core of what he called professional revolutionaries to work with trade unions to overthrow the Tsarist autocracy. Try reading sometime.

Marxist economics is alive and well. Marxist economists like Richard Wolff commonly advise large companies, financial institutions, and policy makers. So there are plenty of people that take Marx seriously.

Claiming that socialism is anti-American is baseless. Socialism is an economic theory, not a political one. It simply stresses that those that produce should reap most of the benefits of what they produce, where capitalism stresses the raw accumulation of capital. Socialism recognizes the importance of humanity and the resources we depend on, while capitalism simply commodifies everything. You could implement more socialist policies in the US, and our system of government would still be the same. Plenty of other countries have working socialist democracies with much better standards of living, healthcare, and employment then we have here. Germany is a good example.

  • Sean68

Human greed is a constant if left unchecked will devour our Western economies. It really isn’t THEIR fault, it’s ours for allowing our politicians for allowing it to happen.

Watching a facist movement rise up and murder thousands of people in Sarajevo was a change he sought? You literally have no idea what you are talking about. He was a war correspondent for the NYT for 20 years and has won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of Al-Qaeda in Europe.

    1. Moron, every time you lower taxes on things like capital gains, you redistribute wealth to the top. The rich now pay lower marginal tax rates than the middle and lower classes. This is a HUGE shift, a HUGE redistribution of wealth.

    2. Obama spends hundreds or thousands of times more money on oil and nuclear power than on solar power. The reason you’re confused is because you’re stupid. You will believe anything, no matter how crazy it is.

    3. Do you understand now that you are a stupid person, that you are completely incapable of thinking for yourself?

  • http://www.facebook.com/eric.albin1 Eric Albin

And they were both re distributionist’s and communists who believed in changing society to suit their own ideals. And if you think Pol Pot was not a socialist or liberal, you know too little of his early career, when he was involved in the “Freedom Front” and WKP in Cambodia. That he later became a totalitarian dictator (as do all progressives) shows the danger inherent is that brand of thinking. Stalin also believed in “Socialism in one country” so to denounce him as anything but socialist is ludicrous. It was only after 1928 that Stalin replaced the relatively liberal “new economic policy” with his more centralized 5 year plan, thus edging into totalitarian territory, so you cannot disown them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/eric.albin1 Eric Albin

Perhaps they were simply similar nutbars, though the Serbians were not Fascist, but Nationalists. And, yes, I actually do have a fairly decent idea of what I am talking about, as anyone with a clear memory or a decent understanding of history will recall how excited progressives were when a certain smallish vegetarian was elected in Germany (made man of the year in Time!) or the trains running on time in Rome or how “Uncle” Joe was modernizing Russia right out of the middle ages. Constant fawning over revolutionaries goes back to Robespierre, and frankly, I could care less. (and do you know why I draw your attention to the fact the Serbians were not Fascists? Because in the second World War II the Croats were, and killed millions of Serbs. That you think the Serbs would suddenly become fascist is perplexing. Perhaps you were using it as a general term?)

When I call you stupid, I’m not calling you names. I trying to make you realize that you are AMAZINGLY stupid.

If you want to say that the Obama administration does not spend money, fine. But your complaint was that they wasted money on solar power. If that wasn’t your point, what the hell was your point?

Please, please, please, try to think for yourself. Try to realize that you have been trained to say the exact opposite of the truth in every instance.      Alright, let me explain this one more time for the hard of understanding (Scrzbill, this is you). Wall street and the banks were forced by the federal government (gentlemen with names like Raines (D) Dodd (D) and Schumer (D) to make loans that they knew were going to go bad. These “less than perfect” loans came to be called “subprime”, and were used to drive the housing bubble. The biggest lender in this bubble was Fannie/Freddie. Why aren’t you protesting those institutions? This isn’t about “banks” this is about common sense..it was the government that caused this mess; the banks would not have made half those loans, for fear of losing money. Then the bubble finally burst.
Now those loans are bad, and the properties have liens. The banks seize the properties, getting some of their money back, and donate a hefty chunk to a certain party in D.C. And no, it wasn’t the G.O.P. Remember the phrase “too big to fail”? That was the sound of your taxes bailing out a bank, that then that money being dumped into the coffers of a political party. Who has links to Citigroup? If you lost money (and almost everyone did) it helps to know why the banks collapsed, and who was pulling the levers.
Honestly, it could be worse. With a VATS style tax, we would be in Europe’s position or worse. I could go into exhaustive detail if you like, but this is a good start.
BTW, the socialist “bull” was from the signage the OWS protesters have, as well as the recent speech given in California. The OWS seems to think “closing” the banks will somehow make things better, when they are simply patsies. This isn’t about the 1% who held their wealth, but the government betting, and losing billions (or trillions) of your tax dollars.
Always be suspicious of men who want power.

@ Eric Albin, I’ve got news for you rummy. You are stupid. LOL! KoreanTrevor ripped you apart like a pathetic bag of chips. Too bad your mom didn’t get an abortion, that would have been a mighty fine contribution to the human race.

Hedges is a brilliant analyst. What a great slap down of that conservative clown of a  cunt-bag O’Leary. This is what the right wing does: obfuscate and distract from the facts. What idiots.  By the way, it was Wall St bankers and investment houses, not Fanny and Freddie, who led the way to this collapse. Stop the bullshyte.

As a student just using the newscast excerpt as a piece for a synthesis thesis, I read down to the comments below the article to see if there were any intelligent statements I could incorporate.

I’d like to note that I immediately was disgusted by the fact that so many of you (not everyone, but a fair number) just followed the lead of the O’Leary, and sunk to insulting each other, rather than merely commenting on your own opinion on the newscast. Who gives a damn if someone made a spelling mistake on a post? Really now. That is no reflection of intelligence, just of your own immaturity.

The reason all of this is happening is because people have the freedom of speech and opinion, and by laughing at or directly insulting someone’s opinion, you do a better job of making yourself look like a fool than whatever “funny” thing the person you felt the need to insult did in the first place.

The reason this newscast is “going viral” is because people often find humor or debate in a person of professional merit making themself look like a fool on pubic television. A few of you deserve to have your comments made viral. There’s a reason few people use their name on the comments; would you say the same things if the words could be traced to you?

I’m so appalled I’ve started a petition to get O’Leary off of the airwaves.  Kevin O’Leary’s behaviour is a violation of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Policy 2.2.21 Code of Conduct, in addition to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Journalistic Standards and Practices.  SIGN HERE AND SPREAD FAR AND WIDE: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/professionaljournalismincanada/
