Chris Matthews: GOP “Meaner,” “Nasty,” And “Put The Heel To The Back Of Your Neck”

video

Following the censure of Charlie Rangel, Chris Matthews spent a segment on his program comparing how the conservative and liberal press handled the story. He then compared how they handled scandals involving conservatives like David Vitter and decided that conservative politicians and pundits are always “meaner.”

His guests, Ron Reagan and Politico’s Roger Simon agreed. Reagan pointed out how President Obama spoke of the “Slurpee Summit” as opposed to how Republican leaders did. Simon added “Republicans bring a gun to a knife fight” and compared Glenn Beck calling Obama a “racist” to liberal hosts who are “wry, sardonic, and witty” instead like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert (not to get all “false equivalency,” but are they really the best direct comparison on the left to Beck?).

In the end, Matthews admitted that there were some nasty tactics on the left, just not as many on the right. He’s correct in that. Very few conservative politicians get attacked by the liberal press. After all, there just aren’t insults to go around after the press gets done with Sarah Palin.

This is pure, unadulterated BULLSHIT. The Republicans are under near constant assault from the Democrat controlled media, whether their in power or not. If its not the media, its the far left liberals in Hollywood. What the hell are you basing your completely unsupported claims Jon Bershad? And to prove it, a few minutes later Ed Schultz had Alan Grayson on and they talked about their love and respect for Republicans and all things conservative.

Matthews wouldn’t say that if he were to visit Mediaite and read some of the leftist comments here.

imagine what those whiney hypocrites would say if someone on the democrat side would say fu to the country like jon kyl is. basically saying that he doesn’t care if russia sells a nuclear weapon to al queda.

i know that one characteristic of a democrat is being kind to your fellow man (something the right has no idea of)

Chris’ colleague, KO, has said the following:
    – Michelle Malkin is a mashed up bag of meat with lipstick
    – Scott Brown is an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, teabagging supporter of violence against woman

    Or Chris himself:
    – Well let’s just treat the whole planet, why not, like John Boehner does his ashtray?
    – on George W Bush, on his farewell address:
He was a rich kid driving his father’s car. He got to be President because of his father, let’s face it, the same way he got into school and everything else, the same way he got his car probably.
    – During an appearance on the January 9 edition of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Matthews said of Senator Hillary Clinton, “the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around” and that “[s]he didn’t win there [New York] on her merits.” Matthews has referred to Clinton as a “she devil,” compared her to a “strip-teaser” and called her “witchy.” He has referred to men who support her as “castratos in the eunuch chorus.” He has suggested Clinton is not “a convincing mom” and said “modern women” like Clinton are unacceptable to “Midwest guys.”
    – on Michelle Bachmann: Look at her eye contact. I asked her when we had her on election night if she’s under hypnosis. She doesn’t answer the question. She looks straight ahead in that kind of zombie-like manner, like she’s waiting for somebody to flash a card, like in “Manchurian Candidate.” I mean, I don’t know what her state is.

Don’t even get me started on whack jobs like Bill Maher, PuffingtonHost, etc.

The bottom line is that meanness is an attribute of extreme views on either side…

What an inane conversation. Comparing Beck to Stewart and Colbert, how ignorant.

Does the GOP play a little harder than the Dems, I think so, but it’s not a matter of matching all their tactics. I remember Bill Clinton saying one of the basics in politics for him was , “when they hit, I hit back” Politics is a rugged game and you have to be willing to fight, and fight hard and smart.

If your opponent won’t find a bipartisan compromise then you do what you need to do.

Towards the end of the “Charlie Rangel defense”(lmao) pow wow, did MSNBC’s Matthews soil himself when Roger Simon dropped dime on MSNBC’s race baiting despicable ruse when uttering “showed up at a Barack Obama rally with an AR-15 assault rifle” http://tinyurl.com/24utcrb…THE AR-15 WAS CARRIED BY…A BLACK MAN http://tinyurl.com/2wmdzj9

Question to Matthews & MSNBC…is it “Meaner,” “Nasty,” And “Put The Heel To The Back Of Your Neck” to report on Rangel stealing from Americans like robbing a liquor store…OR is it “Meaner,” “Nasty,” And “Put The Heel To The Back Of Your Neck” to attempt to racially browbeat and extort Americans http://tinyurl.com/24utcrb?

    Chris,

You guys started all this when you “got” Robert Bork. Then we “got” Jim Wright. It been a dogfight ever since. The Republicans have always been better organized. The traditional Democrat coalition– liberals, minorities and labor– has always been harder to organize for strictly political efforts. But the left has its own mindless political zealots to be proud of. Olbermann, Lawrence O’Donnell and Sergeant Schultz are every bit as bad as Beck and Hannity. And Rachel Maddow bashes the GOP constantly, claiming she is not “political” because she thinks she is right.

  • Alz

The Left is falling apart. Joblessness is skyrocketing and these liberals are in a tizzy because their policies create joblessness and they don’t have enough control over people (yet) to quell the rebellion. …so they are having a “nervous breakdown”.

There’s a difference between being “political” and being a “political operation” as she described. Fox News IS a political operation because they LIE, which is free speech, not free press. Maddow has made a couple mistakes on the air, but she hasn’t lied the way Fox anchors do on a regular basis. When you lie, you are exercising free speech. When you report facts, even uncomfortable facts that make conservatives look like the assholes they are, you are exercising freedom of the press. That’s what’s going on here, not some notion of pure, non-partisan, a-political centrism. Fact and fiction.

You’re right about the blight of the inner cities but wrong about who controls them. It’s rich slumlords that create urban blight. I’ve lived in a few pretty big effing cities, dude. Not gonna slip that one past me. And no, more and more people are not “figuring out” that liberalism sucks, that was the era we just left. It doesn’t happen all at once, but after conservatives take control again in 2012, there won’t be anyone left to blame for the downward spiral, and then America will either perish, or liberals will take over and conservatives will go into another one of their customary 60-year hibernations. Enjoy that outcome, whatever it is – people like you will own it.

Sorry, wrong. the inner cities are UTTERLY controller by liberals. At every level, liberalism rules. Even the “activists” are liberals! As for slumlords, some of the biggest slumlords ARE the government!

    Wake up, liberalism sucks!

It’s hopelessness, despair and death – the results of concentrated liberalism. In the case of the inner cities, they have been victims of your ideas for over 50 years.

I know you don’t make up your own material, but it is still “made up” ya know! LOL

So, yeah, the numbers suck. Can you imagine what they’d be like under McCain? Try 14%, easy. You think anyone would give a shit about deficits if McCain was in charge? Hell no! We’d already be bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bombing Iran for sure. And the draw down in Iraq? Nope. Debt ceiling? “Raise the roof, y’all! AAOOOOHH!”

The only “dependency” in all this is the dependency of the right wing on bullshit pop-psychology like “liberal policy creates dependency.” You know that kind of shit makes you sound exactly like the kind of East Coast elitist our grandparents would have complained about just a few generations ago. No shit. That kind of clinical mumbo jumbo is exactly what liberals in states like Kansas called bullshit back in the 20s and 30s. And guess what, they got the message. But here people like you come, full circle, accusing the people who call out the very same bullshit of being the elitists. You need to learn your history, bro. The sooner you learn the truth, the less traumatic the experience will be for you. Seriously.

No, they use facts that support their arguments in the context of the arguments they’re making. The “facts” conservatives usually believe are being omitted are indeed facts… that have absolutely nothing to do with the thing they’re complaining about. It happens 999 times out of 1000 with conservatives. “Hey! You liberal scumbags left out this totally irrelevant and utterly pointless fact!” Yeah, we know all about that part. Thanks for sharing. ;-)

As to using reason and logic, you have literally just exploded the irony meter. Congratulations. Woot!

Judging from many of the comments on this website the rightwingers are a lot nastier than the leftwingers. I suspect it’s jealousy and envy of liberal left who at least have some compassion and care about society and have been responsible for most of the progressive legislation of the past 50 years. I would like some of you rightwingers to tell us what great contribution the right has made to benefit the majority of people in this country. Right now the Republicans are on the ascendent and they don’t have a clue about how to deal with problems in a complex society. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months.

I know this may seem strange to you, but the Tea Party Express didn’t invent activism. That, my friend, is an invention of the left. Like every idea the right has ever had, it originally came from the left. And in a part of town that is dominated by blight as result of the neglect of wealthy land owners and their red-lining pals in the banks, just exactly what type of activists would you expect to crop up? Small government crusaders? And as for the projects? Yep, conservatives like Robert Moses and the red-lining bankers that supported him. Here is how I explain the Left’s crackup and mental breakdown. It gets into Liberal Courage – there is such a thing.

Liberal Courage is knowingly doing the wrong thing. It takes a certain courage to continue to push policies that end up hurting people. But after awhile even their little deranged brains can’t handle the multitude of conflicts and it gets very difficult to hold it all together.

As you might expect, the liberals with the most Liberal Courage are the most deranged.

    http://www.sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/2010/12/glenn-becks-bare-knuckle-smash-mouth.html
It’s just a matter of time before Glenn Beck gets smashed in his face, metaphorically writing.

One question and one comment: Why isn’t Ranel facing criminal charges? Ron is a disgrace to his fathers memory.

What’s the point? Chris Matthews is pathetic, but it doesn’t matter because no one watches or listens to him. He is old news.

Chris is getting a bit long in the tooth!

    Doesnt he remember who said:

“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”

Could it have ben the good-natured ghost of partisanship-past, Barry Obama?

Chris needs to learn how to use the internet before he makes remarks such as those!!

Unlike you pair of anonymous flamethrowers, I comment under my real name, and can be easily verified on both Twitter and Facebook. My age, experience and aspects of my professional background are not that hard to find on the web. In fact, given the conservative proclivity to obsessively research opponents on the web to find any piece of leverage possible (Hi, Sara!), I would be surprised if you idiots hadn’t already discovered that I am, in fact, a 23-year media professional with a real resume to back it up. Nobody has 23 years of experience fresh out of high school, children. So you can wail on that all you like, it just reveals your own hysteria. And since it’s obvious that neither of you attended high school, let alone graduated from it, I wouldn’t be so hot to poo-poo the standard American high school education. When any of you reactionaries can show tangible evidence of who you are and the positive contributions you’ve made to society, I might, just might, start giving a shit about your opinions. Until then, I consider you hacks paid by the RNC or CoC to spew reactionary bullshit online all day, or just too stupid to know that you CAN get paid for being as obnoxious as you are (probably the latter), and I will treat you as the uninformed, unintelligent, un-American traitors to everything we hold dear that you are.

I know you think your writing is so powerful that it serves as judge and jury all on its own. But nothing you said is true. Nothing. Democrats are forced to negotiate with Republicans, and of course this is upsetting to the folks at MSNBC — who believe only in smearing and making jokes about Republicans. Hence Mr. Matthews’ shrill and frantic tone.

Get used to it Chris. Your days of passing trillion dollar bills without reading them are over.

Shocking that a discussion concerning civility on a show hosted by a liberal and involving a liberal journalist and a liberal whatever the hell Ron Reagan is supposed to be ( fortunate son? ballet dancer? cat lover?) and analyzed by a liberal writer on a liberal website would come to the conclusion that those darn conservatives are so much meaner than their liberal breathren. This whole MSNBC-driven “false equivalency” talk about civility between left and right is bullshit, easily disproved by watching any of MSNBC’s primetime lineup or reading the Huffington Post or listening to the likes of Mike Malloy or Rhandi Rhodes. Can we just agree that politics tends to drive people to rather over-emotional states and both sides say things that are inappropriate?

We could if the right wing would ever play fair. But they won’t. Ever. These are the kind of people who, when asked to describe their biggest weakness in a job interview, say “I care too much,” or “I’m a workaholic and stay late at work too much,” or “I’m such a relentless perfectionist that I can really be too hard on myself at times, but I just can’t seem to learn the lesson that it’s OK to fail to achieve greatness sometimes… I mean it’s fine for some people, but I can’t seem to give myself a break and accept superior when I know it can be perfect.” You know, the kind of critical introspection that leaves the analyzer feeling even more proud and magnanimous about being in love with his or her self. And I’m tired of watching liberals reach out a hand that gets chewed off by their conservative counterparts every time.

So, apologies, but no, I don’t think we’ll ever see a time again when conservatives are capable of admitting to making a mistake or not having all the answers. It simply isn’t coded into their DNA. Most of them would rather die than admit to being wrong about anything. Ever. That’s the sad truth we’re living with now. Maybe some day your hope will come true, but I don’t believe or trust a word from the right, and I don’t think I ever will again. And I KNOW they won’t ever trust anything coming from the left. Ever. No matter what. This is just getting started. And we haven’t seen anything yet. When the conservatives take over again in 2012, we’ll start to see legislation that aims to outlaw liberals across the board. They already destroyed ACORN. They won’t be satisfied until the last few liberals left in America are in chains at the petting zoo (marketing prefers “petting zoo” to “concentration camp” you know). We’re nowhere near debate on civility. In fact, we’re much closer to a conservative “final solution” than anything else right now. Why else would they talk about “death panels” and “fascism” with such regular certainty. People have to be pretty ginned up to start killing their neighbors. 2013 is going to be an ugly year in America. Guaranteed.

When one says X are the type to people to do Y it's incumbent upon the one making the argument, to you know, back it up. Your characterization of conservative introspection (or lack thereof) and alleged egomania is simply a projection of negative feelings unfounded in any objective evidence.
You then descend into a rant talking about a presumptive GOP takeover that will lead to concentration camps and a "conservative final solution" while ironically arguing that the right is more irresponsible in its rhetoric than the left.

    No prob.

Listen to the rhetoric of people like Ann Coulter and Michael Savage, who have essentially inferred, if not directly advocated, something similar to a final solution for liberals in America. And nobody on the right has ever repudiated them for that. I’m not going to take the time to do a lot of research on the subject tonight, but I will and in future comments I’ll show some things that make me understand that these people are playing for keeps. Not to mention that we’ve already seen violence from anti-abortion extremists leading the charge, and not just Scot Roeder. Remember the Atlanta Olympics bombing? Same cause. Same people. Same phenomenon. And they’re fed by ever-more extremist right wing media. The GOP doesn’t really understand what it has unleashed yet. People who saw the warning signs in Germany in the early 30s were called crazy, too. All it takes is a strong personality and a compliant media. Kenya. Rwanda. Bosnia. Kosovo. Armenia. Northern Ireland. Don’t think sectarian violence can’t happen here, and when it’s backed by powerful interests, it’s a recipe for the real thing. I have far leftie friends who have waned about open fascism in America for decades and I always called them paranoid. For the first time in my life, I’m not calling them paranoid anymore.

Instead of much higher, yes. CBO estimates that official unemployment would be around 14% without the Stimulus Bill, and unofficial much higher still. Yes, Dems kept it from being much worse.

OK, let’s count up all of the right wing violence you can find and compare them to all the left wing riots we can find. Between Roeder and Eric Rudolph, we’ve got 3 dead. In the ’92 LA riot alone, we’ve got 53 dead.

    OK, your turn.

  • Pablo

Here, I’ll help you with a bit of left wing violence and you can find an equivalent or greater right wing thing: Al Sharpton got 8 people murdered at Freddy’s Fashion Mart.

So, we’re at 61-3, lethality advantage Left.

Beck’s arrogance is based upon a reality of his own making.

Olbermann’s arrogance is based upon a firm grasp of actual reality.
