Mayor Bloomberg: You’d Think Giffords Shooting Would Have Started National Dialogue On Gun Control

video

People should be expecting a surprising number of political ads during the Super Bowl tonight. And one of them was played on today’s Meet the Press, when host David Gregory asked New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg about a gun control ad he made with Thomas Menino. In the ad, Bloomberg and Menino admit they don’t agree on much (including which team to back in tonight’s game), but they do see eye-to-eye on the issue of gun safety.

RELATED: Mayor Mike Bloomberg Asks What Could Have Prevented Arizona Shooting, Talks Gun Control

Gregory asked Bloomberg how much the national debate over gun control has been caught up in pure politics. The New York mayor brought up the Gabrielle Giffords shooting thirteen months ago, and thought that could have led to some serious dialogue on the issue.

“You’d think that if a congresswoman got shot in the head, that would have changed Congress’ views. I can tell you how to change it, just get Congress to come with me to the hospital when I’ve got to tell somebody that their son or daughter, their spouse, their parent is not going to come home ever again.”

Bloomberg called on Congress to implement more background checks and seal all the loopholes in existing gun law. He claimed that roughly 400,000 Americans have been killed since the 1960s, a number larger than the number of Americans who died during World War II.

Bloomberg is right on this. It’s tragic that the political climate is such that you can’t propose responsible firearms legislation without being accused of engineering a Marxist plot to confiscate all the guns.

  • Anonymous

Make no mistake, Bloomberg and his liberal allies are not for gun control. They want to ban guns and abolish the 2nd amendment, period.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KSH52GTU7ATNOTCD52RAL3P6XA Jon

What? Bloomberg has Menino sitting next to him for the Super Bowl ad instead of Plaxico Burress?

  • Anonymous

there will be no serious effort on gun control until a prominent Conservative is killed in a politically motivated shooting, and then it will be ideologically shaped to be a not really gun control result that appeases conservatives ONLY.

It should be required that you obtain a gun users license with all the appropriate penalties of law if you obtain and use a gun without a users license showing you were aware of the penalties and demonstrated the proper use of a gun and that you were aware of the laws that governed its use in any way what-so-ever..

When where and how you use a gun in any given circumstance is just as important as screenings/back ground checks for mental and legal reasons you should not have access to/and/or ownership of a gun.

  • Anonymous

If Bloomberg doesn’t become the first Jewish or the first independent president of the United States, something is seriously wrong with this country

  • Anonymous

The public record since the shooting shows exactly the opposite of what you assert, you have the right to be partisan and the right to your opinion but you do not have a right to advance a LIE, do you have a nationally driven campaign of significant influence to ban guns in this country? NO. Is there a national drive to amend the Constitution to repeal the second Amendment? NO.

I personally think that Palin is making the case of and for requiring mental screenings for gun users, she seems to believe that political disputes over gun control laws are an attempt to restrict conservatives political rights and beliefs. If you are mentally un-stable in such a way that you may turn to a gun to express your opinion or beliefs then you should not have a gun, if you are a criminal who has used a gun to commit a crime then you should never have a right to use a gun ever, not even for hunting. If you are a criminal who DID NOT USE A GUN IN A CRIME, then your ownership and use of a gun should be restricted onlly for shuch time as you are under supervision of the state such as probation and court mandates on you r conduct for the time specified there after in compliance with the law you should have your second amendment rights.

That’s right because the law against murder wasn’t enough to stop someone. If only there were a law against guns would this person have stopped and thought, “geez, i am planning on killing someone and breaking a pretty big law, but there is this other law that says I can’t have a gun. I guess I better not do it then.”

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

Mr Bloomberg speaks like the Republican he once was.

NEWSMAX.COM – Anti-gun crusaders seem worried about the advent of a Republican administration. Heaven knows why. Republicans, in recent years, have managed to do nearly as much damage to the Second Amendment as Democrats.

Nixon – Guns are an abomination – he favored making handguns illegal and requiring licenses for hunting rifles.”

George Bush, Sr. banned the import of assault weapons in 1989, and promoted the view that Americans should only be allowed to own weapons suitable for “sporting purposes.

Rudolph Giuliani sued 26 gun manufacturers in June 2000, and proposed a nationwide plan for gun licensing, complete with yearly “safety” inspections.

George Pataki, on August 10, 2000, signed into law what The New York Times called “the nation’s strictest gun controls,” a radical program mandating trigger locks, background checks at gun shows and “ballistic fingerprinting” of guns sold in the state. It also raised the legal age to buy a handgun to 21 and banned “assault weapons,” the sale or possession of which would now be punishable by seven years in prison.

Governor Ronald Reagan of California signed the Mulford Act in 1967, “prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one’s person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street
Twenty-four years later, Reagan was still pushing gun control. “I support the Brady Bill,” he said in a March 28, 1991 speech, “and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay.”

“…just get Congress to come with me to the hospital when I’ve got to tell
somebody that their son or daughter, their spouse, their parent is not
going to come home ever again.”

Huh. I wonder if Mayor Bloomberg went to Montefiore Hospital to visit the grandmother of Ramarley Graham after his cops broke down the door of her apartment and shot him in cold blood. You know, to tell her that her grandson wasn’t “going to come home ever again.”

Wait, no, he couldn’t have, since those same cops kept her in custody for seven hours after they murdered him.

     Meanwhile our DINO President

Last year the Brady Campaign to Prevent
Gun Violence, citing “extraordinary silence and passivity,” graded Obama
    an F on gun control.

During his tenure, the President has also expanded gun rights by
signing laws that allow the possession of firearms in national parks and
    on Amtrak.

Pop quiz hotshot…What’s ended more lives since the 1960′s? Guns or abortions???

But for the grace of God, a very prominent Republican was almost the victim of a mental case, in the early months of 1981.

Strangely, nobody at that time claimed that the would be assassin was a Democrat, like the banshees that screamed that the insane shooter of Gabby Giffords was a Republican, inspired by the worst of the worst conservatives, Sarah Palin.

Mayor Bloomberg is way off base on this one.  In 2002, while he was campaigning for re-election, the late U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, was killed in a plane crash!  Did Mayor Bloomberg suggest at the time that Congress should be prohibited from flying, or that we should limit the number of American Citizens who can use planes?

The fact is that the entire tragedy of Congresswoman Giffords and the people killed on January 8, 2011, was the work of a mentally deranged individual.  If Congresswoman Gifford’s staff had been ordered to pack heat, somebody might have been able to take out the killer and to save some lives.  Navy Seal Team 6 can’t be everywhere!

  • SNAPTIE

Abortion is, and always will be the number 1 killer of mankind. 53 million abortions in the U.S.- 400 Million in China. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/09/26/abortions-death-toll-53-million-u-s-400-million-in-china/

How about making sure they are born, make sure they DO NOT have healthcare, and THEN get rid of them with capital punishment.

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

    Planes are meant for travel.
    Guns are meant to kill.

Aside from the fact that that is the DUMBEST analogy I have ever heard.

  • Anonymous

No, guns are for defending yourself.  They do not always kill.  Very often they deter crime just because the criminal knows you have one!

When you are dumb, every analogy appears to the the dumbest you have ever heard!
Pack heat and protect yourself.  Watch all five (5) of the “Dirty Harry” movies!

  • WiddleBabyDanielson

There should also be a stupidity test.
People THIS STUPID should not be allowed to own guns.

So when he got elected, they concocted a scheme to stay away from the
gun issue, lull gun owners to sleep and play us for fools in 2012.

Your claim that there are more than 3700 per day EVERY SINGLE DAY (Sundays,Christmas and all other holidays included) for 39 YEARS (do the math) in the US….. it has the taint and stench of conservalgious garbage.

A number of procedures and medical treatments result in an aborted fetus and some are covering for a voluntary abortion and they do not get reported as an abortion. And yes we know conservatives at the state and federal level are trying to close off anything that results in an aborted fetus including the certain death of the mother as a requirement of law, MOM must die so the child can live.

That aside, it is the law of the land that a woman has the right to choose and there are reasons for this to be an issue in the political discourse, it is only a desire on the part of conservalgious nut jobs to use the law to take from a woman the right to do with HER body as she chooses and to legislatively deny a woman a right to something that is moral ethical and legal.

There is no moral superiority in a political abuse of process and power to allowing the REPUBLICAN WAR on women’s rights to advance in any way what so ever.

You live in Michigan? Have you gotten rid of all those war on America militias? Including the ones who claim they will ally themselves with and fight with any group or persons who attack the US so they can start this country over THEIR WAY? I mean how many hate groups will you allow to be in your state?

AND I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU ARE WITH OR SUPPORT ANY SUCH GROUP OR IDEOLOGY, but considering the presence of those groups and cults in your state I would be surprised if it dose not have HUGE federal law enforcement presence 24/7/365.
The FEDS should be concerned one of those groups will bring in bombs or other terror weapons and WMD from a terrorist supporting foreign power or an enemy of the US trying to gage the potential of causing trouble in the US for troubles sake.

I wish it was not that way but this is the world conservatives have given us, conservatives in Afghanistan, conservatives in North Korea, conservatives in IRAN, conservatives in China, domestic extremist conservative separatist groups, domestic conservative religious groups seeking Armageddon as a punishment for America not being 100% christian, and a whole host of others a list to long to put the time in to when  enough to justify my crazy POV (as some will see it.) .

How do you reconcile that the people of NYC trust a democrat to keep the office but rejected allowing a republican a third term, and yes the democratic primary for mayor was closed by the time Bloomberg went to register so he became a RINO to run, and has not governed as a conservative or a republican.

There is nothing wrong with closing the gun show loophole or requiring background checks. Bloomberg wants NO ONE except police to be able to carry handguns, that is his REAL agenda. I am a female from Indiana who has a permit, has had training and a background check. Why am I allowed to carry just about anywhere in Indiana, yet if I lived in NYC I could could not? Why am I trusted to make good decisions here, but Bloomberg does not think my life is worth 2 cents in his horrible city? His answer is for me to call the police and wait 20 minutes while I am being attacked. If he is only trying to keep guns from criminals why isn’t he pushing for “shall issue” for law abiding citizens in NYC? B/C he likes having a near total ban on defensive handguns and controlling people by making them dependent on the police. In fact the US Supreme court ruled the police have no duty to protect the individual! Well if I am in his safe city who will protect me if I cannot protect myself? Bloomberg – keep you nose in your business and stay out of the business of other jurisdictions! Not everyone wants to live like your subjects do in NYC!

  • Anonymous

Obama wasn’t referring to “non-liberals,” but to working-class voters in old industrial towns decimated by job losses. And his full remark was, “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

He was exactly right. I’ve seen that in my own family.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/UZXAVAQZEIAAJPCGPUFLVS3F4E Janet

Agreed on their agenda….  Exploiting Gifford’s tragedy is WRONG, but as an educated conservative leaning woman I must say – Palin is a TOTAL ldiot and represents the brain dead % of the ultra right fringe. • http://profile.yahoo.com/UZXAVAQZEIAAJPCGPUFLVS3F4E Janet

When and where you use it is already cover under state laws. Each state is different. In Massachusetts a woman went to prison for shooting a rapist in her home with a gun she bought out of state and failed to register. In Indiana a pizza delivery guy got an award for shooting an armed robber. If you don’t like the laws of Indiana, Kentucky or wherever – stay in NY, NJ, IL, MA or CA!

Don’t tell PPL in state that value a woman’s right to defend herself how to go about doing so

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/UZXAVAQZEIAAJPCGPUFLVS3F4E Janet

Guns are tools – nothing more. So is a nail gun, and just as dangerous. There was a LAW ABIDING citizen at the scene who WAS armed named Joe Zamudio. He chose not to draw his gun and sat on the killers legs. Not everyone who is legally armed is the nut job you paint them out
    to be!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/UZXAVAQZEIAAJPCGPUFLVS3F4E Janet

Sensible/responsible means closing the gun show loophole, not a total ban on carry by law abiding, background checked and trained PPL. NYC has a total ban unless you have political friends… That is a wrong as the other extreme!

Gun Show loop hole……Red Herring…..All You have to do is look at Fast and Furious to see exactly how much concern there is by the liberals for individual safety.

Do you also understand that The Police Have No Duty to Protect You as a Individual?

And that there is no authorization under the Constitution Article I Section VIII for the Government to require the registration of guns or their sales.

And why shouldn’t You as a Citizen have the right to go to a show and conduct a private transaction with another private citizen to make a good deal on the purchase of a Legal, Constitutionally Protected Product, Guaranteed by Constitution, and not have the government interfere in that transaction because a criminal might break the law?

I didn’t know My Constitutional Rights could be abrogated because a criminal might break the Law.

Rights are the Natural Environment of a Free Man, and they exist independent of the Constitution, The Constitution only recognizes the fact of Rights, and Does not grant anything, as Rights already exist to the Citizen, The Free Man.

I want users of guns to have a license that proves they are proficient in the use of the firearm(s) they own and fully aware of the penalties of its use when they use it justified or not, as those are issues to be determined and settled after its use.

Get one defend yourself, do not get it wrong when you use it because even if state law lets you escape punishment for using it improperly federal law will not be so forgiving if you were not just or correct in its use and the results of that use.

BTW both my wife and I are gun owners and proficient and accurate in the use of our guns.

I have sat on a jury as an alternate in a murder trial and my sister was killed by her conservative husband, both involved the use of a gun, I have a low opinion of gun owners who murder people, and yes guns do not kill people people who use guns kill people.
