Melissa Harris Perry: ‘Rick Perry Wants To Get All Up In Your Uterus And Take A Picture’

video

That Texas governor Rick Perry is a strongly pro-life candidate for the presidency should come to few as little surprise, though on tonight’s Rachel Maddow Show, host Melissa Harris Perry dove a bit deeper into what kind of legislation results from those beliefs, bills that don’t attack the abortion process itself, but make doctors involve themselves more in the process. Or, as Harris Perry summed up the Texas sonogram bill struck down recently, “Rick Perry wants to get all up in your uterus and take a picture.”

After a primer on Perry’s stance on the government in general– namely, that he want a government “that’s so small you don’t even notice it”– Harris Perry (no relation, as she often emphasizes) noted that the attitude that the government as a social safety net and guide for the impoverished did not extend to individual reproductive rights. According to her, if “you’re a lady… Rick Perry wants to make the government so big that it can control the pregnancy of any woman in Texas.”

The “taking a picture” part of the uterus argument comes in with the Texas sonogram law, which would require women seeking abortions to get a sonogram at least 24 hours before getting the abortion in order to, as one legislator explained it, give the woman time to reflect upon the life she is about to terminate. To Harris Perry, this puts the doctor in a position of “whispering in your ear that you should be ashamed of yourself” as a representative of the government– and according to the courts, as well, which struck the bill down. “The bill treats women as less than fully competent adults,” she concluded.

Well Melissa, someone has to look out for the children you liberals so carelessly snuff the life out of.

  • Darladoon

    this bill is disgusting

  • Jayamerican1

Wouldn’t you just love to be an embryo, all warm and safe in Ms Harris womb. Until she decided that you were an inconvenince and might interfere with this bitch’s communist agenda. It’s an absolute travesty that she would be forced to suffer the inconvenince of a sonogram but no problem whatsover to vacuum out that poor baby and toss it in the garbage. This bitch disgusts me.

That line is just downright hilarious.

    BTW, Michelle:

“Well Melissa, someone has to look out for the children you liberals so carelessly snuff the life out of.”

so you believe the government should have a role in how parents raise their kids, then, an idea that many people, especially Republicans, reject outright?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WH3ZLMM7CUKUHUIMK4TKXW6SQE John

What an embarrassment for MSNBC:(.  It’s unfortunate people are actually exposed to this idiocy.

  • Darladoon

actually, liberals care more about actual children, and less about fetuses.

    with republicans, it’s the opposite.

If Perry does get all up in a uterus and takes a picture I’d love to see Marcus Bachmann running in disgust from the thought or sight of a womans lady parts.

The real purpose behind this bill has nothing to do with morality or informing the woman, it’s money. Money for a sonogram, money for consultation and money for a second and third visit.

This whole Mediaite became an echo-chamber of the extreme right propaganda (before it was only strongly leaning to the right), with just a few exceptions that are supposed to be used as powder in the eyes to refute the right extremism and color the whole portal as being “neutral”.

As for Gov. Perry, he is a living definition of CREEPY.

  • Anonymous

Is this the best token MSNBC could come up with??  The truly sad part is that some parent is paying thousands of dollars for their son or daughter to sit in this mulli’s college class.

  • Anonymous

It´s noted that Rick Perry (like all the crazy rightwingers) doesn´t
give a sh++ about the Constitution. He likes to work actively against
the decision of the Supreme Court to impose his religious beliefs on
anyone. As the ultra-reactionary pledge said only really hardcore Christian judges
should be appointed to the Supreme Court. Not the rule of the law and
the Constitution, but the rule of religious beliefs via the Supreme
    Court.

Where does one get a bag of dicks? Must be at the Racists Only supermarket because I’ve not seen them for sale anywhere!

  • Jayamerican1

It’s actually contempt for people like you.

  • Jayamerican1

I’m sure my tax dollars are supporting quite a few.

  • Anonymous

That’s the problem though. Perry and people of his (and yours it seems) ilk worry about the unborn child but, once the child is born, that’s where the concern ends. Substandard healthcare, no money for schools, the list goes on. And if these children make it into adulthood the prospects of a good job and life are pretty dismal. Jobs are all being shipped overseas and people like Bachmann want to do away with the minimum wage to make us “more competitive” with the global market. “Employers will start to hire” she says without that pesky mandatory minimum wage requirement. Sure! While we’re at it, why not take all of those previously unborn babies and put them to work in the factories. As soon as they’re old enough to operate the machines of course. That was we can do away with the public schools all together. Think of the money we’ll save!

This is not a left/right issue. If you want less government in our lives how can you be for more government in our lives? Government should not be telling a woman what she can do with her body. Period.

  • Anonymous

So, you are now the ruler of who is allowed to be American and stay in America? McCarthy much? If you don´t like living in a country where people can express their opinions why don´t you found your own country somewhere else and where people are only allowed to think what you think.

When you have a tumor, truly just organisms clustering around each other in your body, your doctor ALWAYS shows you where and what it is before the decision is made how to treat it.  Then to leap to the social safety net… how can people not inherently know of their own hypocrisies.

I’m pro-choice though personally anti-abortion.  A law requiring a sonogram and a 24-hour waiting period does two days.  Requires proper time to contemplate such a life-changing decision and to see the  truth that the life being terminated for what it truly is – a forming baby.   I see nothing wrong with being fully informed before choosing to end a life, nor ensuring a rash decision isn’t made.

Roe v. wade is settled law, so libs worrying about choice are just wasting air.  If the only way someone would choose to end the baby’s life is by doing it quickly AND not knowing what life is being ended, maybe abortion is not the right choice.     Life has some really tough choices, denial isn’t healthy for anyone.

That would be approximately $200 to ensure that a pregnant woman sees the life she’s about to end.  I’m pro-choice, but that’s a no-brainer as a money issue.

On this issue, the libs remind me of the NRA.  The NRA should not be against buying AK-47′s which have no reason to be allowed legally just as libs should not be against reasonable steps to fully inform pregnant women about ending a baby’s life.   Both extremes loose the majority when they go crazy over the extremes of their rights.

  • ObamaSux

Considering how ugly MHP is no heterosexual man would want to go near her uterus. She makes Chaz Bono look attractive.

  • ObamaSux

LackofCommon sense might even be dumber than MHP.  Since you and the rest of you radical liberals hate America LEAVE.  It is not a matter of telling someone to leave but rather giving sage advice to someone who would be much happier in another Country.

  • Anonymous

The disgusting part of this bill to me might be any further insinuation of government into the lives of it’s citizens. On the other hand, I’m not sure that it increases the size of government and I agree with giving  a woman “time to reflect upon the life she is about to terminate.” I agree with that in principle only for cases of abortions of “convenience”, not rape or medical reasons.
I would much rather see the medical community take up this policy on their own, as a matter of ethics, rather than being forced by law.
Melissa Harris Perry’s “get all up in your uterus” characterization is hardly descriptive of the law and a bit absurd. Going that far makes it pretty clear that she is using the legislation in an attempt to discredit Rick Perry.

  • Anonymous

    Darla,

You’ve just lumped yourself in with those who thought slavery was just fine because it was legal. Heck, what Germany did to the Jews in the 1930′s & 1940′s was legal at the time. Why do decent people have contempt for an immoral law? It is a shame you feel the need to ask that question.

  • TPRTR

Where does MSLSD find these propaganda readers? It is painful to watch this woman. Somebody else has to be writing this stuff behind the scenes fir the consumption of the sheeple and moonbats. I can’t imagine anyone so out of touch with reality. You have to ignore the 3 years of failed policies by Obama and focus all your hate and lies on a governor of Texas that actually does have a successful record and actually has created jobs and improved the states economy. Why doesn’t MSNBC spend more time on Obama’s accomplishments? Because has none.

  • ObamaSux

They find them on the unemployment line as they are incapable of holding a real job and need to pay them minimum wage.

  • Anonymous

    ostracario,

Nice job. You managed to throw out several of the discredited pro-abortion arguments.

    1. The garbage claim that decent people (another term for pro-lifers) only care about the baby in the womb. Truth is decent people give to charities at a much higher rate. Dems and pro-aborts think voting for socialists is same as personal giving. Pro-lifers adopt children. Beyond the differences between good people and pro-aborts, that argument fails the test of being relevant. I could be opposed to any number of bad things happening to another human being without being obligated to provide for that person.
    2. The stupid “Government should not be telling a woman what she can do with her body.” comment is beyond stupid. No one is telling women what they can do with THEIR body. The problem is when they decide to kill another person. The child they are carrying has a completely separate and distinct DNA. That means it isn’t her body anymore than my claiming my 18 year old daughter is part of my body. Please take a class on biology before entering these discussions.

  • teabagginobama

That’s funny coming from a liberal

  • Anonymous

Weak argument. Roe v. Wade is cited as settled law in an attempt to convince decent people to give up fighting against evil. Settled law is nothing more than a temporary status. Plessie v. Ferguson was settled law. Do you think the court was wrong to later overturn that ruling in Brown v. Board of Education? Slavery was settled law for a much longer time than Roe v. Wade. Are you arguing that slavery should still be legal since that was settled law?

  • teabagginobama

I thought getting up into one’s nether regions is the stuff of Liberals’ wet-dreams

This MHP character shows a stunning lack of understanding of simple medical tests. I’ve been with my wife when she got ultra-sound tests done. No going up and in was necessary. Entirely exterior process.

  • Anonymous

    your arguments fail.

i know many a liberal who has adopted a child and who fight tooth and nail for assistance to families in need. and look at policies by GOPers and tell me that they provide/assist for the life of young children. (my lord, you don’t even want to educate them properly) btw, how many babies have you adopted?

it’s DNA is disntinct, yes, but it requires the woman’s body to house it.  and nature, itself, eliminates many a fertilized embryo. so, technically, you could call the fetus a parasite. and in its early stages, it is POTENTIAL life. but due to the shear number of fertilized embryos that don’t implant in the uterus or the number that are miscarried in the first trimester how do you reconcile how precious that life is when natur/god doesn’t in the beginning stages.

at least your daughter is legally old enough to decide for herself whether to birth a child as opposed to you forcing her to do it.

finally, it’s people like you that have less respect for the pregnant female as a person with feelings, needs, etc. since it’s not happening to you, be a libertarian and STFU.

  • Anonymous

they don’t often regret it, NonElite.  that’s where your little “reflect” thing is incorrect.  they understand the gravity of what they did, but then look at where they are in their life and feel they did the right thing.

it seems as though you don’t know women who have sought an abortion otherwise you wouldn’t call them rash.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Like you give a tinker’s toot about life, Michelle-in-Utah. You’d be quite content to let a child starve to death, an elderly woman die for lack of medical care, someone merely accused of a misdemeanor be lynched. Take your kart o’ krap and move on down. You’re stinking up the place.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

We are celebrating in Texas today. Yesterday, the US District Court for the Western District of Texas struck down Tollbooth’s Forced Vaginal Penetration Act. The opinion was very well-reasoned, and I suspect the Court of Appeals will not overturn it. I also suspect the Supremes will not grant certiorari .

  • The Real Royal Emperor

When you wrote those words, you wrote true words. Tollbooth has long been in the back pocket of the Texas Medical Association.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Your analogy is good, but in a state in which 51% of its citizens have no health insurance, you may be running a bit thin on the application.

  • Anonymous

What a nonsensical string of failed arguments. If I adopted 15 kids would you suddenly take my position seriously? If I’ve adopted none would my arguments be any less valid? Of course, the answer to both questions is no. Killing little kids is bad regardless of any event in my personal life. This has nothing to do with respect or lack there of for the pregnant woman. If I am opposed to a person (pregnant or otherwise) stealing, driving drunk, committing murder, lying, or making any number of poor decisions it does not mean I don’t respect other people in similar circumstances who don’t do wrong.

You last point “since it’s not happening to you, be a libertarian and STFU” is quite possibly your most disgusting point. So, if I see a an elderly man getting beaten and robbed I should do nothing since it’s not happening to me. If I see a woman getting raped I should mind my own business since it isn’t happening to me? Non-Jewish Germans were right to say nothing about the holocaust since it wasn’t happening to them? Your utter lack of a moral compass is pathetic.

Are you assuming that most woman who choose abortion aren’t fully informed?  I agree that it’s good to know what options are available in a real world, local scenario. What adoption agencies are there locally, what financial aide is available , etc. This one is far to intrusive in how it forces doctors and their patients to preform actions based on someone’s personal beliefs about abortion. It borders on being emotionally cruel to woman who have made the decision. I’m all for offering compassionate alternatives to abortion in real world terms but no thinly veiled emotional coercion.

That may not be the intent but that is the consequence. Since it’s legally the woman’s right to choose and should be between her and her doctor it becomes an act of disrespect toward both for the state to claim, and insist that she and her doctor jump through certain hoops to convince them that the decision was made responsibly and fully informed in way that is ideologically and state approved.

  • Anonymous

You are correct. Just being the law doesn’t make it morally correct. This article and the law it addresses is an example.

The prolife position reminds me a little of the gays rights issue. Woman have for generations made decisions about whether to continue a pregnancy or not in a variety of ways. That was okay as long as it wasn’t talked about in polite company. As the procedure became safer and more public more people felt they had to cast a moral judgement on the private lives of others. We need real world solutions. Abortions  wouldn’t stop if they became illegal tomorrow. The result would likely be that there would be more children born into poverty and needing support. I have respect for the position of revering even a potential life, but how that expresses itself can be positive or destructive. Offer compassionate real world alternatives to abortion , and take care of the many needy children already in the world. teach people to be responsible when it comes to risking pregnancy, and allow women and their doctors to make their own decisions without intrusion.

Nobody, conservatives or liberals have any superiority or authority in declaring their moral position to be the correct one.

  • Anonymous

Let me ask you…do you think that women who’ve chosen abortion after:

    1) Finding out they’re pregnant;
    2) Decidiing to end said pregnancy;
    3) Often taking a couple days off work,
    4) Traveling significant distances to a clinic that performs abortions;
    5) Shelling out the cash for the procedure and hotel rooms, et cetera –

Do you HONESTLY think that after all that, they haven’t put significant thought into what’s going on and the import of what they’re doing?

Do you HONESTLY believe that women who choose abortion don’t have at least a passing familiarity with fetal development and understand that they’re ending a pregnancy that would quite possibly result in a baby if allowed to go to term?

Getting an abortion isn’t going to Mickey D’s for a #3 with a Diet Coke.  In fact, thanks to the efforts of anti-abortion zealots, it’s become *quite burdensome* for women to exercise their right to abortion.

This is ENTIRELY about zealots using government to interfere with a process it has no business messing with, and throwing up roadblocks for women (particularly poor and working-class women who often can’t afford travel, hotels, etc) who wish to eercise their right to abortion.

You’re right, but only by half.  It’s about making money *and time* an obstacle for women who choose to have an abortion.  That’s the only real purpose of these sorts of laws – to make it more and more difficult for women who want an abortion to obtain one.  End of story.

I think she’s part black, but there is a white line around her hair line and her forehead is darker than any other part of her face.  She is full of BS though.  What is wrong with women know they are getting rid of a baby and not just getting something akin to having a tooth pulled.   It’s very damaging to a woman to have an abortion, mentally and physically.

It’s quite simple, Hoss.  First of all, opposition to contraception is the flip side of the anti-abortion coin.  You might not personally oppose it, but many in the “pro-life” movement do, mainly because it removes the “consequences” from sex.

Secondly, in what parallel universe do “consequences,” particularly negative ones, not equate to “punishment?”

Effectively the position is “Unwanted pregnancy?  Tough – you gotta wait it out and either adopt the baby out or live with a kid you don’t want to raise.”

  • Anonymous

    So…you got nothing.  Check.

  • Anonymous

you forgot that all of your examples are of live human beings, with names.

the ones I’m talking about are potential human beings, not yet in this world and still bound to their fetal development by the chick whose uterus they are occupying.

it’s your own comparisons that fail.  since it’s legal, it’s not murder.  a fetus doesn’t steal, beat someone up, rape, get raped, or go into concentration camps.  you know why? because it is not yet a person living and breathing outside of a womb.

you may not like my STFU comment, but CosmosDan understands exactly how much you and your ilk disrespect the woman who is pregnant by implying that they are too irrational to make such a decision.  (and yet, that same gender raises children every single day at a much greater proportion and involvement than male counterparts)

you a female?  i am.  and if you think i’ll let some *ss like you tell me what will/will not happen in my body, you’ve got another thing coming.

  • Anonymous

    and what have you got?

  • Anonymous

a potential human being that is non-viable at the first trimester.  collection of developing cells.  initially unable to direct its own development until late first trimester.  not really viable (and even then, with problems) until 5-6 mo of development.  wholly dependent upon the female housing it for about 2/3 of its existence.

can any of you, like, know what you’re talking about before you get all up in arms?  seriously? it’s like asking what kind of cell will a pluripotent (or totipotent) stem cell develop into.

but that wasn’t the question.  the question, mr. righteous, was how many adopted (or even fostered) children are you personally attending to?

how many scared teenage girls have your rescued/assisted?  if you want to get into the “baby tossed ingo garbage” analogy, here’s a google page (1st page) with hits using search term “baby found dead in garbage”.  (http://www.google.com/search?q=baby+found+dead+garbage&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1)

Doesn’t seem they thought it out so clearly before spreading their legs. And if they are so brilliant and naturally knowledgable, how come they got pregnant in this day and age? The 1% that are rape and incest victims is a whole differant question, granted, but 50 million convienence abortions should and need to be finally questioned. Might be they should stop fornicating. At the very least take precautions. Why should every one else support (welfare) or pay for their careless indifferance. Planed Parenthood abortions gets Millions of tax $$$ everyyear.

  • Anonymous

Half of women who have abortions report they were using birth control in the month they became pregnant.  Sometimes they neglected to use it one time, sometimes the birth control failed, sometimes it was used incorrectly (something better contraceptive education would help, but we can’t have that, nooooo).

I reiterate my former assertion – borne out by your comments – that ’pro-life” is mostly about punishing women for having sex.  “Consequences” equals “punishment.”  It’s funny how the pro-life movement didn’t really exist until contraception and sexual freedom became widespread.  There were plenty of abortions before Roe v. Wade – estimates are there were as many if not more.

The tax dollars that PP gets, as I understand it, are Title X dollars, intended and used to provide regular health care to poor women – stuff like breast exams, contraception, pelvic exams, Pap smears, etc., not abortion.

In the end, it’s none of your concern.  Whether they fornicated, or had a failure of birth control, or whatever, it’s not your damned business why or how women choose to have abortions.  If you don’t like abortion, don’t have one.  Simple as that.

Is this what a ‘liberated’ woman is like? Dening the quatifiable truth? The requirement for a woman to [see] what she is murdering seems a small cost to the rest of the society she lives in to pay for her homocide. Why this Ms. Perry is so intent on refering to Gov. Perry as wanting to ‘get up in her uterus’ is so classic trash talk as to be fundamentally offensive. This woman, regardless of what she claims, is uneducated, unethical, and unforgivable. She herself needs to sit in an a few hundred abortions, see the feet kick, the hands grasp at the surgical tools killing them, see the child recoil from pain, and even do that whole inconceivable ‘silent scream’ as they die. Ms. Perry would not come out any different then know, she has no morals or values for the most defenseless among us, but her complete lack of empathy might well affect those working in the OR, those using abortion as a means of prophylaxis, or even the doctors themselves, let her hardened heart be an example at how low humans can be. I reccomend she change her name to Melissa Harris Mengle, rather then Perry, there could be no doubt then.

If people are truly repulsed by abortion, why not promote birth control? Promote the use of condoms. Pharmacists take an oath just like doctors and nurses. They have no right to refuse to provide birth control. No right whatsoever. Insurance companies need to pay for birth control. Medical Assistance and Medicare should pay for birth control. Hell, they pay for Viagra.

    To late.

  • Hagen619dj

Y ou are exactly right!  Unless a pregnancy happens because of rape or incest…it should not be aborted. It is killing a child as plain as the nose on your face.  To take the life of a child just because it doesn’t fit into your life plans is selfish and hateful.  Women need to guard their bodies and be selective of who they are in contact with (except rape and incest). If women would hold themselves more accountable…alot of abortions would not be happening.

  • Hagen619dj

So pregnancies are punishment for women who have sex????  What planet did you come from. when it comes to killing a person, everyone should have their “noses”  IN YOUR FACE.  That child has a right to live just like you do.  Too bad your mother didn’t feel the way you do when pregnant with you.  Women are responsible for what they allow to happen to their bodies. Abortions have only made the decision less responsible for a women. The sonagram is a great example of what this country should stand for. Protecting those who can’t protect themselves.

  • Hagen619dj

This country definately should have a say so in abortion. 90% of the “young unmarried” women are being paid for by this country anyway.  Those of us taxpayers who are supporting you and your child should have the right to protect a fellow citizen.  Just as men are to protect women and children,  women are to protect their babies.

  • Anonymous

No problem. Any time. We all fight the good fight. Thanks for the note. I’ll keep in touch. Thanks for caring though.

  • Hagen619dj

When it comes to saving the lives of babies, money as little consequence. Excuses are what kill babies. Excuses from a women who didn’t guard her body and didn’t have respect for herself. women don’t like to hear that but it is true. Being selective in sexual partners would totally be eliminated if they had more control  themselves. Seems it’s easier to blame someone else. Parading your sexuality to the opposite sex has it’s consequences. Men don’t care….women need to.

AND, Do you HONESTLY think that is what is happening now. Women can now go to most any city in the country and have this done and in most cases get financial(Government) assistance in some form or another. So dont give me that BS about shelling out cash, whos cash? There are more than enough avenues to get protection from getting pregnant. You can get free condoms from the free clinics all day long. You just have to use them, go figure. I am so sorry about the inconveniance that may cause, NOT.
We all have consequences for our actions, if I were to get my partner pregnant its my responsibility to help with the baby, fetus to adulthood.

    How a liberal thinks:

“A 24 hour waiting period before ending a life through an abortion, OUTRAGEOUS!! A 36 hour waiting period to buy a handgun, a constitutionally protected act, well, that sounds reasonable.”

“Guns kill 10′s of thousands of Americans every year, they should be illegal. Abortion kills 100′s of thousands of Americans a year, it should be more readily available.”

Forget term limits, I think anyone involved in public policy should be required to take a basic logic test. That would weed out most of our public officials.

You asked whats wrong with this law, and according to the vast majority of legal scholars and experts (you know, people who study the constitution and its jurisprudence?), here’s what: the constitution! Why? Here are some problems with it….
One has to do with the insinuation of your comment: that a woman who decides to terminate her pregnancy either doesn’t know what she is doing (aborting a fetus) or needs to be reminded of that fact. The fact that you think a woman might not appreciate the difference between aborting what could potentially be her child and a tooth speaks volumes of your respect for another person’s right to choose…and her dignity to make a competent decision for herself. The other problem: this sonogram involves a pretty intrusive procedure (google trans-vaginal probe if you’d like to know what I mean). Since you seem so concerned with the mental health of a woman, I’m sure you can see how forcing her to undergo this procedure could traumatize a woman already in a difficult situation.

But at the end of the day, “Al Gore”, when you find yourself pregnant and you are not sure what an abortion entails and/or need help making a very important personal decision that affects you more than anyone else, just know that there is nothing preventing you from getting a sonogram. Its supposed to be freedom OF choice; not freedom FROM choice.

liberal vs. conservative = WHO CARES?! For Gods sake, exercise your right and ability to think not just categorize.

  • guest

Where do you get your information from? How can you have such a strong conviction based on something that is just simply not true? The Hyde Amendment PROHIBITS all federal funding for abortion EXCEPT under two circumstances: (1) when two doctors have certified that continuation of the pregnancy threatens the life of the woman; OR (2) when the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. That is it. And in both these exceptions, the woman has to qualify for Medicaid first. If she doesn’t she has to pay for it herself. The Supreme Court has also made it clear that Hyde Amend is the law. There is simply no question about it: the federal government DOES NOT FUND abortion for anyone who does not fall under one of the two exceptions.

In addition, over the years, Congress has enacted legislation essentially banning abortion funding for other large groups of Americans dependent on the federal government for their health care or health insurance, ranging from federal employees and military personnel to women in federal prisons.
