Mike Bloomberg: Hey, Surfers? If You Surf During The Hurricane, We Won’t Jeopardize Our Lives To Save You

New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg addressed New Yorkers around 9:30 a.m. ET today (in both English and Spanish) during a live conference from Coney Island.

He urged New York City residents in mandatory evacuation zones to leave as soon as possible, as the MTA completely shut down service at noon today and not heeding a call to evacuate is indeed illegal. He also (and as a Floridian, I absolutely echo his concern here) advised everyone to prepare for the possibility that power may go out during and for some time after the hurricane. (Some suggestions for how to deal: Make sure you have non-perishable food items; plenty of water for drinking and, yes, flushing; wet naps or rubbing alcohol for hygienic purposes; a battery-operated radio and flashlight; cash, preferably stored in plastic; fully-charged cell phones). The Mayor stressed that lower Manhattan would be especially susceptible to a loss of power.

He also had a special message for surfers who might want to take advantage of waves following the storm:

And for the surfers: We all know that it’s a lot of fun to catch a big wave. This storm is dangerous and we just don’t have the resources. We don’t want to put our first responders’ lives in jeopardy to try and save you.

That’s natural selection at work, babies.

Below is Bloomberg’s full conference:

I swear, this Diminutive Republican/Independent is on television more than Flo in the Progressive Insurance ads.

If there are waves, I’m out there!

Bloomberg is no Chris Christie but he gets an E for effort anyway.

  • caconservative

Do you ever get the feeling you’d like to slap the crap out of every person that voted for this monkey? New York deserves what it voted for!

  • Anonymous

He’s absolutely right in this.  Nice and succint, mayor.

  • Anonymous

Yes! he’s a dope but he’s right about this one thing

I don’t get how they expect people to evacuate but won’t send in national guard troops to protect their property.  New York communities are designed to have people looking out for one another.  When everyone leaves, their neighborhoods become vulnerable to theives.

    Surfers will surf though.

Christie’s got a way with words doesn’t he?  “Get the hell off the beach” is about as direct as it gets.  He would make a great President, but looks like I’ll have to settle for him just being my Governor for the time being.

I’ll be live tweeting the looting I’ll be doing in the evacuee’s houses down the shore, btw.  I’ll be set for life with products to maximize my tan.

Mayor . Should we stock up on salt , butter and cigarettes ?

  • Anonymous

Is this any different than that little 16 year old girl who tried to sail around the world?

  • Anonymous

Bloomberg tried to pass regulations to prohibit the hurricane from entering NYC due to too much sea salt.

  • Anonymous

Flo looks a lot like Robert on a big Saturday night out in Austin , but Flo wears less makeup and her beehive is not as tall .

  • Michelle

For probably the first (and last) time, I agree with something Bloomberg said.

  • Michelle

    HAHA, good one!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NWVKX2P2QBPQ6FHQHCHVIC2ALQ Fedup in Florida

You’re trying to associate Bloomberg with Republicans????  That ship sailed a long time ago!

  • Michelle

I love that about Christy.  Can you imagine he and Allen West together!?  That’s would be awesome!  You never have to wonder what those 2 are thinking.

  • Anonymous

Seriously, the left could accuse him of many things, but “leading from behind” wouldn’t be one of them.  There would be no “vague” economic policy coming out of that office.

As a proud resident of the Garden State, Christie’s public fights with the teachers unions here has been quite fun to watch!

I’d agree with him except the emergency services are obligated to save people. I don’t know what the hell he’s smoking.

I don’t think Abby Sunderland meant to sail into a hurricane. She just wanted to sail around the world.

  • Anonymous

    When does the “Looting” start.

  • Anonymous

No, but there were understood dangers in her situation.  She got caught up in those dangers and she had to be rescued using public funds.  The surfers don’t want to die in a hurricane either, they want a thrill.  Same thing she wanted.

Did ya know that the Kings wife is know as Cleopatra       – queen of denial

    When did it stop?

  • Anonymous

Maybe they’ve adopted California’s water rescue rules, that’s where they all stand around and wait til ya drown, then let the civilians drag your dead ass ashore.

  • Anonymous

Sorry but he ain’t one of ours. He’s one of yours Kingy, another meddlesome nanny stater.

The voice of lunatic-leftism: Mayor Michael Bloomberg: “To all my muslim pals:
the City of NY will do everything possible to protect you from the
storm. To all Christians: Hope your GOD protects you, because I  won’t
do a $#@& thing for you.”

Actually, if one of the surfers or someone gets in over their head (so to speak) and needs a cop, they just need to light a cigarette or hold up a salt shaker. New Yorks finest will be on them like white on rice.

  • Anonymous

Wow! Where did you get that TeaBagger Cult translator device?

It’s amazing how you TeaBaggers play victim and whine about EVERYTHING!

The TeaBagger Cult are, hands down, the biggest Cowards this country has ever produced!

  • Anonymous

It’s for your own good. If we find out you were out having fun, we’ll beat the crap out of you, put you in jail, and steal your money. Wow, surfing really is dangerous! Respect my authoritiah…..

  • Anonymous

You mean he’s not on his way down to DisneyWorld?

  • Anonymous

Maybe he was just leading from the DisneyWorld hotel.

  • Anonymous

There would be no compassion in that crowd.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1431811538 Josh Kim

I agree with that. I think the City is obligated to rescue all people.

  • Anonymous

Well, should it always be rescuing Butt Surfers with free condoms, health care and understanding that a guy just can’t pass up some nice, ah, stuff?  Or maybe Free Needles is more your thing.

  • Anonymous

If the city isn’t the Coast Guard certainly is.  “Ya gotta go out, but ya don’t gotta come back”

  • Nick Thimmesch

    Bloomberg’s still high on pot:

  • Davidyurmangirl

    You are so correct!

  • Davidyurmangirl

Hate to say this I love christy BUT THIS IRENE THING IS SO OVERDONE!!!! NYC are wimps

  • Anonymous

Yeah, that’s one in the very short plus column for Bloomberg. I think I would have put it a little differently.
“You have the right to pursue your happiness up to the point where it effects other people’s lives in a negative way. Don’t expect a rescue team.”

  • Anonymous

Well, the surfer that died in FL earlier today might have thought it prudent to follow this advice.

  • Anonymous

Not DURING a hurricane they’re not.  First rule of being a first responder is not getting yourself dead.

There is a point during a storm where NO ONE can operate.  Once conditions are even basically reasonable, they go out while others still hunker down.   Some yahoo goes surfer during the wrong time, heck even if someone just goes out during the wrong time, they’re taking their lives into their own hands.

Wanna do that, write your name and social security number on your body in Sharpie so that they can identify the body later.

  • Anonymous

Garsh too bad that big bad ocean just didn’t want to cooperate.

    I want a pony, btw.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1431811538 Josh Kim

    huh? LOL

  • Just some Blow Hard…

Why is Creed from the office standing behind the Mayor?

  • Anonymous

Okay, so has this turned into a contest of who can be the most brazen while advising citizens?

  • Anonymous

I like whoever it was that went with the “If you’re going to do that, would you mind tying a tag to your toe with your name on it? That’ll save us a lot of trouble once the storm passes.”

  • Anonymous

Government is not obligated to protect your from the consequences of your actions.

  • Anonymous

If you’re shooting yourself in the head, government is not obligated to stop the bullet.

  • Anonymous

And that’s why you hatehatehatehatehatehate them. Because they’re hiding under their beds, right?

  • Stephen Pyle

you got a source for your quotes or just making stuff up as usual?  Hard to take you and your beliefs serious when you say ridiculous things like that…

  • Michelle

Now that’s a little cynical, accusing them of over-hyping the hurricane.  I kid, I kid!

  • caconservative

His job, and that of “Gov.MoonPie”, is to set in motion all the emergency systems available and get the warning out to the citizens, and that’s the end of their job. We, as adults, don’t need to hear the condescending crap that fallows.

  • caconservative

Was that dumb-dead surfer an adult who made the decision to do what he loved to do? If so, he died doing what he loved, and we’re blessed with having one less idiot! All in all, a wining combination.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I meant over hyping the political aspects of the hurricane.

  • Anonymous

I like that too. I think tying the together would be good.
