Reports: Creator Matt Weiner On Board For New Season Of Mad Men

The ongoing Mad Men business saga threatening the show’s future appears at an end, with AMC announcing today that the show will go on, and, with negotiations nearing an end, the show’s creator Matthew Weiner will be on board. In a press release today, the network announced a new “long-term” deal for a fifth and six season, hinting at the possibility of even a seventh, with all parties sounding excited to get back to work.

Via The Wrap:

AMC and Lionsgate today announced the return of the iconic series “Mad Men” for seasons five and six with series creator Matthew Weiner back on board as showrunner. Concurrently, it was announced that Weiner has signed a new long-term deal with Lionsgate, extending into a possible seventh season. The announcements were made by Charlie Collier, president of AMC, and Kevin Beggs, president of Lionsgate Television Group.

As for the alleged dispute between Weiner and AMC, the show’s creator stated that he was happy to see the network “support the artistic freedom of myself, the cast and crew” and that he was “excited to get started on the next chapter of our story.” So all’s well that ends well.

This, of course, leaves fan speculating as to how the characters will change over time, especially given the fact that the 1970s are just around the corner for the characters… just in time for 2012.

Well Jesus Christ. As though cancelling far and away the best show on television over a few dollars was a real option. Go fvck yourself AMC. The next season of Breaking Bad had better be sufficiently epic to make up for no Mad Men at all in 2011.

The Walking Dead is much better then Mad Men.
    Just saying.

Love this how but Breaking Bad is the best show on tv. Season 3 of BB was amazing.

I’ve been invested in this show since Minute One, and I had wondered why this past season’s finale seemed to end the series (although not in the best way it could have by a long shot). NOW I get it: Weiner knew he would be negotiating and possibly lose so he wanted to provide some kind of closure in case it never came back on again. (Plus, Jon Hamm taking every TV commercial voice-over job he could find suddenly since season 4 ended, rivaling and almost out-doing Tim Allen in number of ads, gave me a clue something was up.)

Well, guess what? It worked. I’m so over it now, especially if I gotta wait 6 more months than usual for season 5. Yawn. What more is there to logically do, have Don develop cirrhosis of the liver? Sleep with Sally? (Don’t bet against it.) The gays want Joanie to have her baby and dump her hubby, so they’ll continue to watch, but for me, it’s a big old who cares and I’m left feeling pretty jipped. I expected better than for them to squeeze the dang thing out like a tube of toothpaste.
