Obama On Healthcare: Let’s Not Re-Fight “The Battles Of The Last Two Years”

Video

In tonight’s State of the Union Address, President Obama spoke about about many large, aspirational goals, but also spoke specifically on one issue that doesn’t seem to go away: healthcare reform. Obama began the topic by winning the crowd over momentarily with a joke: “now, I’ve heard rumors that a few of you have some concerns about the new health care law.”

Despite Republicans seeking repeal of the entire healthcare reform bill, Obama stated:

What I’m not willing to do is go back to the days when insurance companies could deny someone coverage because of a pre-existing condition. . . . So instead of re-fighting the battles of the last two years, let’s fix what needs fixing and move forward.

Also, in a sure sign of Obama’s eagerness to move more towards the center, Obama extended a new olive branch to Republicans:

Still, I’m willing to look at other ideas to bring down costs, including one that Republicans suggested last year: medical malpractice reform to rein in frivolous lawsuits.

Does he really think malpractice reform is going to help fill in the cost of millions of new people with pre-existing conditions? He is not stupid so is this just arrogance? Or is he just lying to our faces? I wonder.

Spoken as a man from the center > good start!! Now follow thru. Overall well done.

Welcome to the re-election campaign.that said the more centered he becomes the better off we’ll all be,including him.

We lost a lot of time and resources that could have been directed to the economy and job growth on a blackbuster bill that created massive spending and did not have to happen while the country suffered so much.

Now we are faced with debt for decades at least.Get to work dammit!

    Good luck with that, Barack.

OBAMA: Tackling the deficit “means further reducing health care costs, including programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which are the single biggest contributor to our long-term deficit. Health insurance reform will slow these rising costs, which is part of why nonpartisan economists have said that repealing the health care law would add a quarter of a trillion dollars to our deficit.”

THE FACTS: The idea that Obama’s health care law saves money for the government is based on assumptions that are arguable, at best.

To be sure, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated the law will slightly reduce red ink over 10 years. But the office’s analysis assumes that steep cuts in Medicare spending, as called for in the law, will actually take place. Others in the government have concluded it is unrealistic to expect such savings from Medicare.

In recent years, for example, Congress has repeatedly overridden a law that would save the treasury billions by cutting deeply into Medicare pay for doctors. Just last month, the government once again put off the scheduled cuts for another year, at a cost of $19 billion. That money is being taken out of the health care overhaul. Congress has shown itself sensitive to pressure from seniors and their doctors, and there’s little reason to think that will change.

  • Seeing 2012 From My Window

OBAMA: “I’m willing to look at other ideas to bring down costs, including one that Republicans suggested last year: medical malpractice reform to rein in frivolous lawsuits.”

THE FACTS: Republicans may be forgiven if this offer makes them feel like Charlie Brown running up to kick the football, only to have it pulled away, again.

Obama has expressed openness before to this prominent Republican proposal, but it has not come to much. It was one of several GOP ideas that were dropped or diminished in the health care law after Obama endorsed them in a televised bipartisan meeting at the height of the debate.

Republicans want federal action to limit jury awards in medical malpractice cases; what Obama appears to be offering, by supporting state efforts, falls short of that. The president has said he agrees that fear of being sued leads to unnecessary tests and procedures that drive up health care costs. So far the administration has only wanted to study the issue.

Trial lawyers, major political donors to Democratic candidates, are strongly opposed to caps on jury awards. But the administration has been reluctant to support other approaches, such as the creation of specialized courts where expert judges, not juries, would decide malpractice cases.

You’re right, I should’ve said a majority of American’s do NOT want Obamacare.

(Politico)- Public opposition to the health care reform law spiked to a record high in a new poll out today — but Americans don’t necessarily want Republicans to spend time trying to dismantle it.

Fifty percent of Americans have unfavorable views of the law, according to a joint survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health. Opposition to the law jumped 9 percentage points from last month and is the highest since April, when Kaiser began asking the question every month.

…The new opposition to President Obama’s biggest domestic policy initiative has been driven largely by independents. Fifty-seven percent of independents had an unfavorable view of the law this month, up sharply from 41 percent in December.

OBAMA: Vowed to veto any bills sent to him that include “earmarks,” pet spending provisions pushed by individual lawmakers. “Both parties in Congress should know this: If a bill comes to my desk with earmarks inside, I will veto it.”

THE FACTS: House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has promised that no bill with earmarks will be sent to Obama in the first place. Republicans have taken the lead in battling earmarks while Obama signed plenty of earmark-laden spending bills when Democrats controlled both houses.

It’s a turnabout for the president; in early 2009, Obama sounded like an apologist for the practice: “Done right, earmarks have given legislators the opportunity to direct federal money to worthy projects that benefit people in their districts, and that‘s why I’ve opposed their outright elimination,” he said then.

An individual may perceive a way of life, or a method of social organisation, by which more of the desires of mankind could be satisfied than under the existing method. If he perceives truly, and can persuade men to adopt his reform, he is justified. Without rebellion, mankind would stagnate, and injustice would be irremediable.- Bertrand Russell

Obamacare is a disaster, makes things worse, and needs to be repealed. That was what Nov. 2, 2010 was about. Obama is trying to pretend Nov. 2 never happened and thinks we are so stupid as to let it slide. Not gonna happen. While the Senate may not pass the repeal there will be another election in 2012.

Infrastructure that keeps America a SUPERPOWER is not socialism. High speed rails is something all the futuristic countries have,…. we are seriously falling behind, maybe it’s because we’re debating stuff like teaching creationism in school.

Ah well, .. who needs paved roads anyway? just socialism… right?

Let’s just let capitalism decide, because what companies DONT want to pave roads to attract customers? Then we can have a paid-for police force if things get out of hand. With oversight that is determined by the marketplace. I say, we let courts be run by corporations too, like blackwater. That way the market can decide who’s truth is worth more.

To be honest, I say only people that own land should be able to vote. No one that rents. Only the richest people should make decisions.. and they shouldn’t have to pay high taxes either. Even if they try to push the poor lower, we should reward them for that because the rich give the poor a goal. If those poor losers didn’t have a hero to look up to they would just kill themselves or revolt. So it’s really important that the rich stay rich, so the poor never get any power.

Then you have to surround the poor, taking away their social programs, lower the minimum wage, making healthcare useless. If you can basically push the poor into a caste system, where they are born in a poor neighborhood, denied affirmative action, made a target by the police constantly, continue to lower the minimum wage… you could make it so the poor are sort of like prisoners… you just have to find a way where people can’t suffer on the streets.. cause seriously, who wants to see that? yuck, go inside, I don’t need to see your ribcage XD maybe if we let you have welfare you wouldn’t be throwing up blood XD haha poor people should become Republican, then they wouldn’t be so pathetic.

    Capitalism can’t go wrong!

Snowspot, maybe creationism in a school system with vouchers is much better than being imprisoned in a union thug dominated bi-yotch run educational system that denigrates males and lionizes diversity, especially low-IQ social misfits, and tries to ‘socialize’ them by telling them they’re okay.

I’ve lived in two western European societies which boast great health care run by the state, unless of course, you run into one of the 90% of hospitals manned by faceless slackers who have 100% job security, so they can’t be fired if you get sick and die from their gross negligence. The Feds should stay out of infrastructure and let the states do it. The so-called high-speed rail system rejected by Wisconsin and Indiana and other states will be constructed in Illinois, which is a joke as Illinois, just by coincidence, is the most CORRUPT state in flyover country with the possible exception of Michigan, burdened with the former metropolis of Detroit, now run by criminal clans and gangbangers elected by the criminal gangbanger population of what used to be Motor City.

I lived in Chicago for ten years and know that every top-down solution to every social problem that is run by the Feds runs into cronyism, bureaucratic inertia, and sheer indifference because of job security buttressed by a grievance system which makes incompetent fuck-ups unfireable.

So maybe there’s a future, Snowspot, for you in a government job—-seems you and that sort of atmosphere would make a perfect fit.
