Rachel Maddow On Ron Paul: ‘Iowa Republicans Don’t Pick Presidents; They Pick Huckabees’

Video

Wednesday night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow discussed what has turned out to be dominant narrative of the day: Ron Paul‘s success in Iowa and what it means… or doesn’t mean.

“Which is amazing, right?” she asked. “I mean, that would change everything in Republican politics! That would change everything in the 2012 race this year! If Ron Paul won Iowa, right? That would change everything! Wouldn’t it?” TRICK QUESTION, SUCKAZ. Because the answer to Maddow’s question is “no.”

As evidence, she reminded viewers of who ultimately won Iowa in 2008: Mike Huckabee. As in, not the GOP nominee that year.

RELATED: Sean Hannity And Bill Bennett Trash Ron Paul: ‘The Candidacy Isn’t Going Anywhere’

Even Michele Bachmann or, gosh, Ricky Perry or anyone who isn’t Rick Santorum could end up winning in Iowa, Maddow added.

“Even though the Ron Paul polling numbers are sustained and solid now,” said Maddow, and even though his “candidacy is always interesting and unique,” the reality is that an Iowa victory for Paul will not, ultimately, mean much. And this is because, she explained, as history has shown, Iowa Republicans are not representative of how the rest of the country voters, GOP or otherwise.

“Iowa Republicans don’t pick presidents,” she concluded. “They pick Huckabees.”

No, not even close Rachel. Because Huckabee and all the others you mentioned who won Iowa in the past are just small variations on the establishment Republican rhetoric. They are pro status quo. Ron Paul is only one who not part of the Republican establishment, status quo. It will be HUGE news- especially around the world as people want to see the US change it’s militaristic foreign policy.  And that news will influence others who have not yet voted and have not yet looked into Dr Paul.

  • 12voltman1

Made as much sense as most post I read tonight!

  • Anonymous

Comparing Huckabee to Paul is apples to oranges.  Huckabee had zero chance of winning New Hampshire even after he won Iowa.  Paul picking up Iowa would be a game changer, as it would give him a HUGE boost in  New Hampshire.  The voting base in that state would enable RP to quickly gain traction and make it a tight race against Romney.

Say what you want about his electability, but there’s a great chance Ron Paul wins the first two GOP primaries. Once that happens, it’s anyones race for the nomination.

That has to be the most failed logic I’ve ever heard in my life.  This Rachel Maddow guy is really annoying.

That’s funny…  The winner of the Iowa Caucus has gone on to win the Republican nomination in 6 of the last 9…  You’d think Maddow, or someone on her staff, would know that.

She can minimize Paul all she wants. More of this will be coming for sure from all angles. Maddow probably realizes that this man she is trying to marginalize here presents the single greatest threat to her stupid candidate of choice currently in office. No other GOP candidate out of the top 3 present a starker contrast to Obama than Paul does. If he were to go up against Obama he would absolutely crush him. He draws republicans, independents as well as democrats. None of the other candidates in the GOP have any crossover appeal whatsoever. Mitt and Newt are essentially progressives just like Obama so they will lose if they are the nominee. Paul quite frankly scares the crap out of the establishment and rightfully so. He is the only honest man in the race and he can’t be bought.

  • Anonymous

Maddow doesn’t care about Ron Paul. A few years ago she jumped on Paul because he believed that blacks don’t need their hand held by mommy government. She basically accused him of being a racist. ( A “liberal” calling a person racist? The hell you say!) And now she loves him? BULLSHIT! She’s just using Paul and my fellow libertarians in order to quench her irrational monkey hate of republicans. We’re not “liberals or progressives”, Maddow. We can think for ourselves and we can see through your Sith mind tricks. Go back to the labyrinth where you belong foul minotaur!

  • Levi

It’s funny how her whole speech sounded more like a plea to convince the viewers instead of an analysis.

  • Anonymous

As a liberal who usually agrees with Maddow I’m finding myself completely annoyed at her here.  I disagree with her assessment because Paul is drastically different from all the other candidates than the past.  He’s a libertarian first and foremost, and in a time when our country is looking outside the mainstream parties filled with status quo mundane mediocrity that has invaded both parties.  If he wins Iowa, it will matter.

  • http://twitter.com/kevin29chev kevin29chev

Oh! It’s different this time Rachel and you know it. Not one single MSM source gave Paul any chance of receiving more than single digit poll numbers six months ago. not in Iowa or anywhere else. every Ron Paul supporter knows or should know that the MSM would say Iowa doesn’t matter. you see Huckabee didn’t have the MSM bashing him from every angle like Paul does or did, not so much now cause it makes you look so ridiculous. for Paul to overcome the media unlike Huck, makes it very different this time Rachel. Plus, 110,000 Paul supporter donations is just crazy numbers Rachel. only 300 people have donated the max amount. Oh yeah! it matters because it’s so much different this time. next money bomb Dec.16, baby!  Go Paul Go!!!!

  • Anonymous

Yes, but will it influence enough people to give Paul the nomination?  I seriously doubt it, considering how eccentric Paul seems and how much money some of the other nominees.  If Republicans actually thought Paul was heading towards getting the nomination, there would be enormous amounts of money poured into the next most popular candidate, in order to ensure a more viable establishment candidate who is more predictable and easily controlled. With all the money put into attack ads to make him look crazy, unpredictable, and unelectable, it would be too hard for him to win. I’m not sure Paul could win a fight that dirty, and I really believe it would become unbelievably dirty towards the end of the nominee selection process.

This piece also ignores the fairly significant role winning Iowa allowed Huckabee to play in the 08 race. Winning Iowa provided him enough buzz and support, in both the electorate and the fundraising pool, to extend his campaign through nearly the entire primary calendar. Sure he ultimately didn’t win the nomination, but most would agree that, had he dropped out much earlier, Romney’s chances of lapping McCain would have been significantly greater. To say his presence was what finally forced Romney out of the race would not be hyperbolic in my opinion. Many believed if it was just McCain vs. Romney through that final stretch of states, Romney could have easily come out on top, with a large number of Huckabee supporters up for grabs and religion being taken off the table (a big weakness for Romney but not something McCain could run on). Had it been Romney who was running against Obama when the financial crisis hit in the fall (without suspending campaigns or Sarah Palin weighing down the GOP ticket) it is anyone’s guess who wins that election. One could make a pretty compelling case that Mike Huckabee’s win in Iowa cost the GOP their best shot at winning in the 2008 general election, so please don’t tell me it doesn’t matter at all who wins the state.

Rol Paul is an ignoramus. He is by far the most ignorant politicains around. He has no clue how America (and other rich countries today and historically) got rich. He is one of this stupid people who think that wealth is based on small governments. He bases this on nothing other than his hunch. I like some of the stuff he says on international affairs, but he clearly never looked at the rather obvious fact that rich countries have massive governments and all poor countries have tiny governments.

Ralph just wants somebody to watch his show so he has to say something controversial. More people are finding out what he said on this site than watch his show. Another messdnc success.

Hasn’t Ron Paul won more elections than any other candidate running? But regardless of whether he wins the GOP nomination or not, winning Iowa will be significant to bring his ideas into the mainstream. Gingrich and Perry are already copying his call to Audit the Federal Reserve. His credibility on this issue was greatly boosted by the support he got in the 2007-8 election season. Before then the Federal Reserve was considered a taboo issue. Now Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed bill received support from 320 Co-sponsors last year.  The other big issue is foreign policy. Only Ron Paul will not support invading Iran. Maybe one reason he receives more support from military employees than all the other GOP candidates combined. Yes winning Iowa will matter when we consider these outside the mainstream notions gaining further prominence.

Maddow conveniently does not mention all of the straw polls that Ron Paul has been winning around the country — including big states like California and Ohio, among others.  Ron Paul’s support, organization, and fundraising are strong outside of Iowa.  Ron Paul can win the Republican nomination despite the media’s persistent propaganda that he is unelectable.  Ron Paul can also beat Obama.  Check out the latest NBC-Marist Survey results from Nov. 27-29:

    Obama 42% – Paul 42%
    Obama 47% – Gingrich 37%
    Obama 46% – Romney 39%

    http://www.therightperspective.org/2011/12/06/ron-paul-polls-strongest-against-obama/

Ron Paul is a threat and the establishment knows it; otherwise, they would continue to ignore him.  Now that the media/ political elite finally see that Ron Paul is going to win, they have chosen to attack him from both the left (Maddow) and the right (Hannity, Bennett, Fox in general).  Ron Paul is the only candidate who represents smaller government, sound money, peace, and individual liberty!  The others -  Obama, Gingrich, and Romney – are ALL Progressive big-government statists.  There is not much, if any, difference between them.  America is waking up to the false choices being handed to them by the establishment and the media.  Americans are seeing that the real choice is not between the “Democrat” and the “Republican”.  The real choice is between more of the same and Ron Paul.

Restore the Constitution!  Freedom, Peace, & Prosperity!  Ron Paul 2012!

A third party vote is a protest vote, you might as well stay home. Kaplush = sound of a toilet flush.

  • Samuel Schoenberg

Racheal Maddow misses the point.  Ron Paul’s biggest obstacle is the fact that people don’t take him seriously and don’t see him as a serious contender.  Many people don’t want to “waste their vote” on Ron Paul.

A victory in Iowa would demonstrate that Ron Paul is a serious candidate, it would bring him to the attention of a larger audience, and help him a lot.

A win in Iowa didn’t mean as much for Huckabee because he never had that problem.  He was taken as a serious candidate before the first caucus, and this time around, he was considered the front-runner, before he declared that he was not going to run.

  • http://twitter.com/pastarocket848 James Martin

because we live in a country with a two-party system, maybe?  just a guess…

  • http://twitter.com/pastarocket848 James Martin

lol.. Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany… all just drowning in “wealth” nowadays, aren’t they.

you confuse “wealth” with “money”.  governments (post 1913) create money, not wealth.  wealth is something which derives value from it’s inherent utility.  government produces nothing of the sort.

  • Anonymous

There has never been any rich country anywhere which had a small government. There can’t be. The countries you talk about are filthy rich compared to a huge majority of countries in the world. Scandinavians are massive governments.

As to the financial crisis it didn’t happen because the gamblers were not allowed whatever they were allowed to do, but because they were.

Paul is ignorant and people who think he knows anything are very likely those who watch stupid You Tube videos about the Gold Standard, the dumbest thing ever invented.

Ask Bernie Sanders about two parties….

  • Anonymous

Paul hasn’t always “been a Republican”. In 1988 he ran for President on the Libertarian ticket.

Paul joined the Republican Party following that election cycle as a matter of pragmatism. Much easier to get elected to Congress as a Republican in a Republican district.

    Paul is a quintessential RINO.

  • Anonymous

and this is why the two party system is retarded

  • Anonymous

Huckabee never had both party establishments and the media trying to exclude him from the process.  He was sufficiently mainstream to be allowed into the circle of “acceptable” politicians; something Paul has never received.  If Paul gets even one vote in Iowa it will be a testament to the power of his message over the vicious blackouts and smears carried out by the left and the right out of fear and disdain for a vision of  future that does not include them.  If Paul actually wins Iowa it would mark a sea change in American politics and a major fracture in the heretofore impregnable facade of the status quo.

    The sheep are waking up.

Maybe they have big governments because they are rich. more money in the country means more tax revenue which means more bureaucrats creating pockets to stuff with money. Just an idea. Many of the wealthiest nations were imperial monarchies, which compared to today’s standards, had very small governments. They let their royally sanction private corporations make all the money. East India Company…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KRCHIOSA7K7BBKNAWF2QDOGXHU GJ

She is wrong that is means nothing. The more delegates he has to the national convention, the more he can change the party platform. A victory in Iowa, would almost certainly mean a victory in Montana. It could even translate into a victory in California.

  • Jarrett Dumond

Or you could say he is a true Republican, in the definition of the word as a believer in the Old Constitutional Republic that America used to be.  For all the other “Republicans” the name is just a placeholder.  For Paul, the name actually has meaning.
