Ratings: Piers Morgan And Howard Stern Beat Hannity And Maddow In Demo

ratings

The second night of Piers Morgan Tonight brought its host for the first time into his new set, and face-to-face with the King of All Media Howard Stern. Ahead of the interview’s airing Tuesday night, Piers Morgan took to Twitter to tweak his competitor at Fox News, Sean Hannity: “Msg to @seanhannity – if I don’t smack you down tonight with Howard, I’ll take you on Thursday with Ricky Gervais. love Piers x.”

Was it a smackdown? According to ratings information just released by Nielsen, PMT was number one in its timeslot among the advertiser-coveted demographic of viewers 25-54, with 551,000. Fox’s Hannity was second, with 506,000 and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow placed third, with 265,000.

The win is a huge victory for CNN, which has been solidly in third place, and a rare defeat for Fox. Fox, it should be noted, did win among total viewers, 2.183 million viewers to Piers Morgan Tonight‘s 1.273 million. Maddow was third with 1.126 million.

In its debut on Monday, with Oprah Winfrey, PMT attracted 2 million total viewers–easily beating MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, but falling short of Fox’s Hannity, with an even more newsworthy guest, Sarah Palin.

Ratings tonight may give an idea of how Morgan’s performance will shape up over the long term, with a somewhat less headline-grabbing guest, Condoleeza Rice.

Now THAT is what I call a smack-down. The inimitable HS on Piers’ show and he lost to Hannity in total viewers by nearly a million and barely beat RM?

    LOL

Ok! let me break it down for ya. It’s quality not quantity. The reason why demo matters is because that is what the advertisers are paying for. They are the one paying the bills, and if your demo is good that’s what they care about. Those in the demo are what matters, not those outside it. It’s not an election. Capiche?

  • Seeing 2012 From My Window

Sky, is it really a surprise that alot of those in the demo age would rather listen to Howard Stern than the news? That’s part of the reason we’ve got such problems in this country,. Too many young people are getting their news from Jon Stewart and Howard Stern! Of course, I’m one of those informed demo’s who actually knows what’s going on in the world. There just aren’t enough of us.

    Yawn!

The spinner in chief is back.

And no, it’s not about quality and not quantity- ask Phil Donahue and others about their short-lived shows on MSNBC.

BTW, Hannity has the luxury of having both- quality and quantity .

I’m sorry Mitchell, you are not part of the demo that knows whats really going on. A dedicated Beck devotee like yourself can’t be described as an informed demo. You need to be open minded to be able to be considered informed, that’s fact not a snide comment.

I’ve wondered about this before and have never had anyone with TV Ad creds to answer.

How does the differential between the Demo and Total affect the ad rates.

I don’t know enough about the mechanics to even ask the question very well so let me try a scenario.

If the ad rate is 1 whatever based on x number viewers how is that figure adjusted to reflect either a high or low standing in the demo.

Thanks to anyone who has an answer.

  • dummy123

So Piers 2nd show was down 40 percent in total viewers from his opening show with Oprah??
Sad that Howard didn’t deliver huge ratings for Morgan.
Piers/Stern was number 3 behind Hannity and Madcow???

  • OxyCon

Uh, Piers’ show sure looks like a tabloid talk show, while Hannity’s is about politics. Apples and oranges.
So if CNN wants to go the tabloid route because they fail at news, that’s on them.

That’s the question I’m trying to get to but not doing a good job.

I guess what I’m asking is is the premium over the base ad rate for the demo enough to make Pier’s show in this discussion more valuable than Hannity’s show last night where he killed Piers in the Total?

    Ah, the good old days…

Am I the only one old enough to remember the way Fox News viewers were always taking swings at Brian Stelter for highlighting the demo numbers in lieu of total viewers? Of course, back then, he was being accused of using them to pump MSNBC & Olbermann, but the underlying arguments are still the same.

Piers Morgan has a repugnant history as first a reporter for and then the editor of three notorious British tabloids. I don’t think he’ll EVER be able to wash the stink off himself–nor should he–from being mentored by Rupert Murdoch and Kelvin Mackenzie, both repulsive yellow journalists. Morgan calls himself a serious journalist, yet he spent over a decade lying, exaggerating and printing salacious rumors about the rich and famous at The Sun (1989–94); News of the World (1994–95); and the Daily Mirror (1995–04). Now he’s trotting himself out as a quality but “dangerous” mainstream interviewer when nothing could be farther from the truth. Buh-bye, Morgan. I’ll watch anything but your hideous mug.

Thanks to anyone who has an answer.

Considerably, for two (2) primary reasons:

People in the Demo purchase more consumables and more high end goods. They acquire and procure at a much, much higher rate. Remember when you were putting together houses and wardrobes, going out regularly. And, with the high tech age, the acquisition/procurement rate differential is even higher.

Effective advertising is for the immediate sales, for branding and building customer loyalty. Branding and building customer loyalty in someone 25 years old is much more valuable than for someone 75 years old. A 25 year old is likely to buy 8-10 more cars in his or her lifetime. A 75 year old may never buy another new car.

    I watched the Stern interview.
It is clear that after comparing the sizes of their respective penises they didn’t have a lot to talk about.
For the record….Howard is a 6….and Piers claims to be larger.
Now that I know the interview was prerecorded and thus edited. It is clear that CNN has thrown out the rule book…which is fine by me. There is too much censorship in cable news as it is….let it all hang out….although I could have probably lived the rest of my life not knowing that Piers Morgan seems to be very proud of his penis.

Which is exactly what I told you, Janet. It’s weighted in favor of the demo, although in a variable amount by product. Car OEM’s and dealers and electronics manufacturers may do 4,5 or even 6:1, while a cruise company may do 3:1 and a food company 2:1. By contrast, AARP and Viagra may be 1:3. Hallmark may be 1:2.

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

The Stern audience are the people in the demo. Duh. Those people won’t be there when he isn’t. Tomorrow they will be gone. Oprah didn’t get them.
He still LOST the overall ratings.

  • http://gordonbloyershow.com gordonbloyershow

People tune in to watch Hannity not his guests. Morgan’s rating as did King’s depend on HIS GUEST. Not a good way to get consistant ratings.

Interesting Marceaux, I mean Blower, but I disagree. I think the relative handful of people who watch O’Hannity do so because they have lonely, desperate lives and PBS programming confuses them.

Actually for the second day in a row, Morgan came in second in total viewers and the headline is that he won in the demo.

Oh, and since I’m back in this thread…

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again today: I think the secondary headline should be that Morgan found new viewers because it doesn’t appear that he took significantly from either Hannity or Rachel. Those that exceeded Larry King’s numbers were new to the primetime line-up.

PS) I’m sure some diehard Howard Stern viewrs may have been attracted to the program, perhaps as many or more as the older, non-Stern viewers who turned it off. And, it should also be noted that stern often guests on Letterman and he’s done either a Kimmel or a Conan, but none of those appearances propelled the program to the top of the ratings.

  • Michael_T

My message to Piers is, “Enjoy ‘em (key demo lead) while you got ‘em.”

My expectation is that with the possible exception of his interview with Ricky Gervais I don’t see Mr. Morgan sustaining his lead over Sean Hannity in the key demo.

In fact, by next week I suspect his numbers will look a lot more like Rachel Maddow’s – who will then becomes his main rival as Sean Hannity separates himself (once again) from CNN and MSNBC … and I don’t even like Hannity.

  • mlong

Hannity isn’t losing any sleep..of course the new guy going to do well..but the key to whether he’ll keep those numbers is if he can keep them with less high profile guest…….it’s all on him and in the long run I don’t see him keeping those numbers too long.

  • TobyTucker

There’s a limited supply of really big name guests. Once he runs the table with those and loses that “new kid on the block” luster, I don’t think he’ll have much to crow about.
