Rep. Steve Cohen Compares Republican Rhetoric On Healthcare To Nazi Propaganda

Video

Rep. Steve Cohen, Democrat from Tennessee, has heard enough about Republicans complaining of a “government takeover” of healthcare and took to the House floor to express his frustration. Only somehow his speech got a little too heated, suggesting Republicans are using propaganda efforts similar to the Nazis.

Cohen’s comments:

“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels. You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing the Germans said enough about the Jews and the people believed it – and you had the Holocaust. . . . And we’ve heard it on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact . . . said the biggest lie of 2010 was government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover.”

While many Democrats are expressing frustration with the claim that government now controls healthcare, when in fact, a “public option” was sacrificed by the Democrats to secure passage, no Democrat was as extreme as Cohen with their rhetoric. For a more effective, and less offensive Republican rebuke, see Rep. Anthony Weiner and his passionate remarks.

I am pleased that you have covered this, Matt, if for no other reason than it robs Michelle-in-Utah of another shrill whine.

    As for Cohen, despicable.

  • Gasket

I agree with you King. A politician never wins any arguments by invoking Goodwin’s law. It’s despicable and I do like Cohen. This was a stupid statement to make. Let the wingnuts use their socialist/marxist/communist invectives. Stay out of the cess pool.

But don’t let that stop the poutrage on both sides.

We don’t really have direct comparisons in the US, do we? The Republicans were like Nazis in some ways, and the Democrats in some ways, but neither can be called Nazi. The Democrats were like the Soviet Communists in some ways, and the Republicans in some ways, but neither can be called Communist. I think it would be better if we called the Republicans Crackers and the Democrats Ladies and Gentlemen, but some might disagree with that characterization. Maybe we should just call one another Americans.

Make no bones about it King there are plenty of progressives in the Rubuic party. Bush, Chaney. Two that come to mind. …The Demacraps are so much better at the propaganda department though. and the fact that Rep. Steve Cohen goes completely on the offense on this. I am extremely pleased to see that ObamaCare is called (now and forever) ‘ObamaCare.’ The blood for the destruction it causes will, happily, be on Obama’s hands. Hospitals will stop being built and doctors will exit the profession, leading to HIGHER costs and angrier patients. Thank you, Obama, for naming this abortion after yourself.

Rightwingnuts are being purposely obtuse. A communications/propaganda principle, the “Big Lie,” labeled by Goebbels, is used daily by the Fox Network (I’ve stopped calling it Fox News), right wing AM radio, by Andrew Breitbart whose name has become a verb, by Regnery Press, by Limbaugh – and if you’re into drinking games, take a shot every time one of them lies and it won’t take long to get drunk.

If the government can fine you for not buying their insurance, then it is definitely a government take over of health care. The public would know this if the media wasn’t so busy trying to spin for Democrats.

Goebbels would be proud. But hey, if you’re gonna go for the big lie tell everyone that 1.4 million people die a year for lack of health care. Who cares, it’s both BS anyway…

As for Cohen, it’s awesome when Jews throw around Nazi references so casually. Nice.

Insightful Bob Somerby has documented the use of the term “blood libel” on his blog The Daily Howler:

    http://dailyhowler.com/dh011311.shtml

Dan Savage, MSNBC, 10/12/10. (A group of Hasidic Jews had directed a “blood libel” against gay and lesbian citizens.)

Gene Robinson, MSNBC, 10/24/08. (A bogus accusation had revived “the blood libel against black men concerning the defilement of the flower of Caucasian womanhood.”)

Mike Pesca, NPR, 1/19/08. (A Woody Allen film had directed a “blood libel” against Manhattan pigeon proponents. Pesca spoke whimsically, with Scott Simon.)

Frank Rich, New York Times, 10/15/06. (Bush administration allies had spread a “blood libel” against gays.)

Mike Barnicle, MSNBC, 10/31/06. (The Swift Boat people had directed a “blood libel” at John Kerry.)

Alex Beam, Boston Globe, 1/14/05. (The claim that two Globe executives had used and tolerated use of the N-word “amounted to ‘blood libel’ against” the execs.)

Andrew Sullivan, The Advocate, 2/2/02. (The claim that gays can’t be trusted around children is “the oldest blood-libel against us.”)

Rep. Peter Deutsch, D-FL, CNN, 11/20/00. (“The accusation that Vice President Gore tried to stop military ballots…literally rises to the level of blood libel.”)

Thomas Oliphant, Boston Globe, 11/18/97. (Seymour Hersh had directed a “blood libel” against Kenneth O’Donnell, the former Kennedy aide.)

Beck and the teas, told him it was ok to say Nazi! Cohen, was waiting until now because he thought the teas had a copyright on the word!

Somerby is a very prescient guy, and one who bemoans the tribalism so rampant in our country.

He said this two days before Eric Fuller issued a threat at a town hall meeting:

    “One last gruesome point:

In her taped self-defense, Palin said that blame-assigning of the type that has occurred “serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that [her critics] purport to condemn.” We hate to tell you, but in that claim she is semi-right. This conduct has certainly stirred up hatred; in time, it could even lead to violence on the part of some highly suggestible Palin-hater. Do we liberals really think that only The Others can be driven to violence? That no one on Our Side can be so foolish, so disturbed or so fallen as to succumb to this vice?

If an assault should ever come from our side, will we recall these pleasing Nights of Rage? These many nights of fake, self-defeating rage—the simple-minded nights of rage that are still being widely stirred in the wake of the killings in Tucson?”

Throughout the 90′s, every time we heard a Democrat accuse a Republican of corruption, you could bet that same Democrat would soon be indicted for that exact crime. Democrats have ALWAYS accused Republicans of doing whatever they themselves have been doing, just as Cohen does now. DemoCrits even accuse Republicans of this “turn-around” tactic they’ve been using for 20 years.

Again (and to be re-stated as many times as becomes necessary), , the Nazi SOCIALIST Party was HItler’s vehicle to apply FACIST enforcement of socialism Germany’s Progressives decreed the superior system to individual liberty. Today, the Anti-American Left does the same thing, according to those who wrote history from the perspective of witnessing first-hand how the Nazi’s grew and abused their strength, and the parallels to todays Anti-American Left. Cohen tries here to suggest that opposing Commie-Care is somehow Nazi-like, when Commie-Care itself is fascist enforcement of the elimination of personal choice.

If I were wrong about this, Harry Reid would welcome the opportunity to convince America of the “superiority” of CommieCare through debate in the Senate, in American style representative government. But to prove I’m right, Reid and the Democrats will disallow any further opposition to the matter, and use fascist enforcement of CommieCare against an unwilling populace……………………….NAZI-STYLE.

Nice try, Cohen. But the only ones who are impressed with your pathetic attempt at “turn-around” are your trained DIMS who are already brain-dead from the hate genned-up by your Party over the past 20 years.

You say its wrong for Cohen to use the term Nazi, then you use the term Commiecare and Nazi, ok, thats about right for a tea! Would Reid … not…. bring this to a vote, because it has already passed, because the teas showed him how to say NO, because its bad for the people to NOT obtain this help! The teas have pitched the lie of killing jobs, (the teas love that word) nothing supports the same, but a tea liar saying it! The teas lie about the cost and they hope the uninformed don’t find out! The teas say the country doesn’t want healthcare, but look at the polls they do, even “Fox” shows the numbers going up! This” repeal “was only to honor the simple minds that got them back in office! They knew this wouldn’t work, now the right will tell them to go sit in the back of the bus!

    “All-American Nazis.”

The rhetoric of the absurd accusation is not at issue here, it is the absurdity of this bill that is the issue. I would venture to say that Cohen never read this bill that he supported, nor was he briefed on the entireity of its impact on our economy. What I believe everyone knows by now is that ten years of increased taxation to pay for the bill only covers six years of anticipated expenditures. This is going in the hole 40% per decade, and that is just plain stupid.

Which lies would it be about healthcare? The “job killing”, your right that’s a lie! The death panels, your right Palin lied!
