Romney To Hannity: ‘I Misspoke’ About Not Being Concerned About The Very Poor

video

In an interview Thursday night with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Mitt Romney expressed regret for telling CNN’s Soledad O’Brien that he was “not concerned about the very poor.” “I misspoke,” Romney acknowledged. “I wish I wouldn’t have said it that way. I made the same thought part of my speeches over the last year or two, which is that I’m really concerned about middle-income Americans. I want to help middle-income Americans. I want to get people out of poverty, into the middle-income category.”

“But I’m concerned and worried about all Americans,” Romney added. “And I want to make sure our safety net is appropriately able to care for our poor. I’m concerned about all citizens, but now and then you misspeak. You have to acknowledge it — it was something I did not intend to say in the way it was said but I recognize that’s part of the political process.”

Hannity lambasted the media for running with a quote that was “obviously taken out of context.” “This is what you will deal with,” the Fox News host said.

Mitt will soon say that he mis-embraced birtherism and racism in accepting the endorsement of his new pal Trump the Liar.

    Yawn, the race card.

But don’t play all your race cards now.  You need to stock up on them.  A hundred million people will vote against Obama in November, and you will need race cards to play against all of them.

  • Anonymous

Yes, and he also “misspoke” when he signed into law, the Affordable Health Care law for Massachusetts.

  • Anonymous

Romney admitted to, right wing radio host, Laura Ingram that the economy is getting better. He also admitted that the POTUS inherited this economy. So why in hell would I vote for his tax plan which would raise mine and lower his???

  • Anonymous

What a whimp – he should have lambasted the media for taking his words out of context and just showing a snippit rather than the whole statement.  He needs to learn from newt and go for the throat of the liberal lying mainstream lefty limosine lovin  liberal media.

If he misspoke, why did he repeat his misstatement when given ample chance to clarify? And why do Republicans think the second half of the sentence–”because they have a safety net”–somehow makes it sound better? The poor in this country have one of the worst “safety nets” in the developed world.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QUGVMSBBEAOYINQ5UOKMV36IQA Sanchia

The words are in context he has said the same comments more than once. Stop blaming the media for his poor choice of words.

  • Anonymous

The anchor even game him a chance to clarify and he just repeated it.

  • Anonymous

Funny how the top three people in the race–Romney, Gingrich and Obama–have all supported the health care reform law at some point. Gingrich proposed it in the 1990s as an alternative to “Hillarycare.” Romney implemented it in MA (where people like it, by the way). And Obama got it passed nationally.

And yet the Republican voters still think that it’s a “Socialist” takeover. Their top guys were for it before Obama was.

  • ganmerlad

The Daily Beast did a really good piece about what the safety net is like now-a-days.

Prior to Obama’s inauguration, Rusty the Chickenhawk stated he hoped “Obama failed”. When the AHCA was introduced, Charles Grassley initially supported the individual mandate because he had supported it in 1993. Several weeks later, he got the memo from the top that the GOP was answering to Rusty. From that point on, the GOP never supported another bill Obama supported.

More jobs lost under Obama than any modern President.

More debt run up under Obama than any President.

Bigger expansion of food stamps under Obama than under any President

No budget passed during the entire Obama administration – even when the Democrats controlled both House and Senate.

Downgrade of US Treasury debt — first time in history under Obama.

    Etc. etc. etc.

    Need more reasons?

    1) Wrong, Obama has 1.4M more jobs created net than Bush

    2) Wrong. Bush’s major policies increased the debt by more than $5 trillion during his presidency. Obama has increased the debt by less than $1 trillion.
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/adding-to-the-deficit-bush-vs-obama/2012/01/31/gIQAQ0kFgQ_graphic.html

Im bothered by this man in so many ways I cant even articulate it. He is a friendly gordon gecko. He is an android. He is a flip flopper. He cant keep a position to save his life and it will only get worse once the general comes around. He has five military age sons and none has even conceived a military career  and neither did he. He gives the majority of his charity money to a church who doesn’t have to disclose records on what they do with this money. He has money in foreign bank accounts for unknown reasons and acts like its not his responsibility to know this. He was for the Iraq war but now says if we knew what we know now he would be against it. He was for tax payer funded health care but now says he is not. He was for a women right to choose, even though his faith was against it but now is against this right. He feels the poor are well taken care of but now he does not. And he pays less of a percentage in taxes than I do. But what really really annoys me is that he had an opportunity to release his long term tax returns but chose to only release one year, with one other year estimate. He is hiding so much its not even funny.

Maybe he could have phrased it a little differently, but if you listen to the whole statement that he made, he put emphasis on the part where he was talking about the middle class, thereby inferring that this was the subject matter at hand, and the point he was trying to make. The reporter is the one who flipped it around and put the emphasis on the first part of his statement thereby making it the story. Once she did that, that was the focus of his comments and the media pounced.

Thanks for your comments – just to clarify:

1a) The primary source is the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (research.stlouisfed.org) where you can double check the data interactively. If you do so please let me know what you find out and how.

1b) My statement simply reflects the data which I assume to be correct (again it is a federal reserve bank).

If you still think I lied please respond to the points above in more detail.

2a) My source was the Washington Post, actually a more right-leaning newspaper. The data is found in the Business part of the newspaper. The primary source of the data is the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (http://www.cbpp.org/).

2b) My statement was a rehash from the article (first paragraph) which simply explains the data.

Again, please respond in detail where you think I am lying.

    3) The math required here is simple – as is the reading of the article. I simply reported the numbers the factcheck team from usatoday found. Their primary source was the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition.

Once more, please detail where I am incorrect.

    Thank you

Really, we have two that could win – Gingrich, who’s been there, done that and got things done with the democrats or Romney who turned failing companies around.

Obama sat and drank coffee or tea as a community organizer and voted “present” for the short time he was in the senate.  So, the choice we have is to somehow think someone who’s proven he can’t govern is suddenly going to learn how? or either one of the two who’ve been there, done that.  we’ve seen the unknown and it wasn’t pretty.

You all sound pathetic, uneducated and childlike in your verbal ‘high five’ dumb responses to each other.

Yes, so you figure if the government declares bankruptcy and can re-negotiate all the overpriced union contracts we’ll be fine?

Hmmm wonder if government can go into chapter 11? lol

Don’t know what he’s going to cut.  Do know that just his election will give the private sector the confidence to create jobs.  Right now the private sector is just waiting for the other shoe to drop – and they are frozen.  A very unhealthy and fearful time for small/large business.

The left doesn’t seem to be able to accept that business is fearful of the government overstepping – controlling.  When business is fearful it does not bode well for the populace.  Obama can’t change who/what he and his agenda is and the majority of people are uncomfortable with the path he seems to be seeking.  He’s tone deaf and that’s why he must go.  Clinton saw the writing on the wall and was bright enough to change course.

Actually Obama gave away 14.2% of his income to charity. Not to bad considering he makes about 1 5th of what Romney makes. And none of it went to a church who keep their records secret. I make more than 7.25 and hour and have seen my stocks almost double since Obama was in office. I have more money now than three years ago. And if you were intelligent, and would have invested when Obama got into office you would to.  And last but not least you are living in a fantasy land if you think Romney is going to be the next president of the united states.

He actually said two things.  One he meant to, and the other he let slip.  He ham-handedly trued to woo middle class voters and in so doing made it clear that the very poors don’t concern him.  (to him, I am sure he sees them simply as a drag on the bottom line.  Unfortunately, he can’t just fire them.)

The reporter didn’t do anything that made this story big, though she did give him a chance to dig himself in deeper.  Even if she had let it pass, it still would have hit the headlines.  Remember “Corporations are people, my friend” and “I am also unemployed”?   As long as he is going to say things that show how out of touch he is with people who make less than a million a year, statements like this will make the news because they give insight into how Mitt Romney ticks.

Your absolutely correct no one should express any opposition to you or anyone like you, it is shameful that their are people who express any non-conservative opinions what-so-ever what do those people think that we live in America? they need to wake up and recognize that in Conservalandia there is no freedom of thought or expression.

maybe they are doing something about it AT their keyboards.

And of course….like good little right wingers, you Fox viewers believe this crap.  Romney did not mispeak.  He and his kind always hide behind a veil of false religion and fake jingoistic patriotism while hiding even further behind a facade of false conservatism.  That is the Republican way.

Obviously, if you don’t like a candidate, you are not going to like their statements either, which inevitably leads to a critique of their comments with the same old talking points we hear over and over — “shows how out of touch he is” — “in doing so made it clear” and my personal favorite “they give insight into how he ticks”.

I really don’t know what the fuss was about his statement about corporations, I always wondered what would have happened had he said “Corporations are cats and dogs, my friend” or how about “Corporations are cheeseburgers and fries, my friend”, of course we know that isn’t true because “Corporations are chili dogs and onion rings, my friend”.

My comment was completely non-partisan!  From my view, your country’s political and economic system is absolutely corrupt, and the only ones who have any chance of fixing it are you guys!  That’s my point.  Wake up, quit fighting each other, and fix your country!  And you’re basically correct, there soon will be no freedom of thought or expression in America!  Maybe Canada too!

    Take Care

Great advice man, I just donated a million dollars to various SuperPACs so I could make a difference. I don’t see why everyone in America doesn’t follow my example.

Translation: “I f*cked up! I went off script and expressed how I truly felt about the plight of the poor in this country.”

What happened to all the commenters here who were crying that Mitten’s statement was taken out of context!!

He just threw you under the bus by admitting his statement was never taken out of context in the first place!!

Your future Republican nominee just made you all look like fools… lol!!

Romney is on a mea culpa tour telling anyone who will listen that he was wrong and misspoke, yet republicans and conservatives and anyone against President Obama are still defending him by saying the media took what he said out of context. Defending a guy’s point who admits the point was wrong. I know Hannity has a big audience but how does anyone understand the man while he obviously performs fellatio on anyone saying anything bad about President Obama

Good, intelligent way to choose a president – “Anyone but him!”

Thanks for pointing that out. I get tired of typing it over and over.

You have to be really poor to qualify for the “safety net.”  People who earn $30,000/yr are not considered poor, but are having a real hard time of it. Romney doesn’t have enough money to buy a clue! He has NEVER struggled.

Gingrich-kicked out by his own guys and is by no means a fiscal conservative.  See: moon mission.

Romney: The center right to Obama’s center left, minus four years experience on the job.

    It’s common sense.

Me thinks he protesteth to much. Look at his tax plan and the lie explains his awkward stance. According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, Mr. Romney’s tax plan would actually raise taxes on many lower-income Americans, while sharply cutting taxes at the top end. More than 80 percent of the tax cuts would go to people making more than $200,000 a year, almost half to those making more than $1 million a year, with the average member of the million-plus club getting a $145,000 tax break. And these big tax breaks would create a big budget hole, increasing the deficit by $180 billion a year — and making those draconian cuts in safety-net programs necessary.

It’s all about numbers not words with Mr. Mitrawmoney…………..
