Ron Paul Explains ‘Dodge’ To Factor Producer: ‘Bill O’Reilly’s Not Really A Journalist’

video

While the GOP debate raged on another channel last night, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly was having some fun with persistent contender Ron Paul, in particular Paul’s assertion that he’s been ignored by the media. While it’s true that Paul has received far less coverage than other candidates (particularly relative to his poll numbers), it’s also fair to say that Paul hasn’t exactly accepted every invite, or so claims by O’Reilly. Producer Jesse Watters caught up with Paul to ask him why he is “dodging” The Factor.

Longtime viewers of O’Reilly know that he has offered an invite to Paul to come on his show for some time now, which makes it odd that Paul hasn’t taken him up on it. The Texas congressman seemed confused by the question, claiming that he wasn’t exactly sure he’d ever been formally invited, which doesn’t really add up, since O’Reilly has proclaimed it on his show repeatedly. The claim that “O’Reilly’s not really a journalist,” doesn’t really hold up, either, considering how often Paul has appeared on a variety of other opinion media programs. He participated in a debate with a Barack Obama impersonator, which isn’t necessarily following accepted journalistic standards either.

The truth is, a Ron Paul and Bill O’Reilly discussion would be delightfully entertaining to watch. While they have somewhat similar politics (though O’Reilly self-defines as a “traditionalist”), they each consistently avoid canned talking points, choosing instead to call it as they see it. Regardless of your political beliefs, the off-the-cuff candor is refreshing in this day and age.

We’ve long been proponents for politicians and elected officials appearing on The O’Reilly Factor, and here’s hoping that after this back and forth, we can expect to see Ron Paul with Bill O’Reilly soon. I will be jiffily popping the corn.

O’reilly avoids canned talking points????? Really?

Ron Paul is getting all of the upside from this. Bill’O is so desperate to try to shut him down he sent one of his producers and in the process looked like an even bigger idiot.

    You tell em’ Ron..

Why should Paul go on the O’Reilly show and get shouted down?  Paul’s answers need time and intelligent thought to understand – this is way too much for O’Reilly to handle.  It is a lose-lose situation for Paul.

Elements on the right see Paul as a threat.

Definitely agree.  O’Reilly is a jackass, and will just be rude and condescending to Paul.  There’s nothing to gain from appearing on the show.  He WAS getting little to no attention, but that has changed, some, since the first week after Ames.  I say Paul has better things to do with his time now.

  • http://twitter.com/usernamenuse sailing

I hardly think Ron Paul handles all of his own calendar, and understand he had a previous NH engagement when OReilly asked him the first time.  Now that Ron was blindsided by this, and pointed out that OReilly isn’t really a journalist, the campaign is more likely to NOT have Ron on in the future, although previously they had said he’d be happy to go another time.

O’Reilly talks over people and cuts their micraphones.  Someone who isn’t rude and blustering is at a decided disadvantage to be able to get out their own side of the conversation.  So why bother?

But if O’Reilly promises not to speak over Ron and not to cut his mic, I bet Ron would go.

Ron Paul is right. O’Reilly is no journalist. He is a bumptious, bilious, buffoonish bag of butane.

  • Anonymous

Off course Ron Paul is right, Billo the Clown is not a Journalist, he is a joke.

  • Anonymous

I’m not a huge fan of Bill, but I think this is a big mistake for RP. He’d reach more people in one night than he normally does in a month of appearances elsewhere.

  • Guest

How in the world could anyone with a brain cell think that the two have similar points of view? What a laughable assertion.

  • BR

I like Oreilly.  He can be a bit of a blowhard  at times but he is man enough to air that video.  In all honesty I think most people would have just not aired the story.

  • Mikelunz

“We dont need a history lesson!” (Line from O’reilly during a previous Paul interview, when Paul begins lecturing the audience as to why Iran hates our policies, as opposed to our “freedom.”) “Last time he was on the show, he started talking about Lawrance of Arabia or something..” (Line from Bill Oreilly last night.) Its simple, Oreilly is not concerned with facts, but rather entertainment.

  • Really?

Shut him down? Ron Paul whined about not getting media attention. Bill O’Reilly has the most watched cable news program. He invited him to appear on it how is that shutting him down? Ron Paul fans might be the blindest bunch of supporters I’ve seen. Hell I don’t even watch O’Reilly but know that Ron Paul comes away looking like a fool with this comment.

LOL Ron Paul is right.  Bill O’Reilly has no journalistic credibility whatsoever.  If Ron Paul goes on his show, O’Reilly won’t even let the guy talk and make up stuff to make it seem that Ron Paul is wrong.  Then the next day he’ll select the emails that side with him and have Bernie Goldberg and Dennis Miller kiss his ass so it seems like O’Reilly won the debate.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JUT2TATEV3OHGQ7HZRYN472XVM Felix

Fact: Ron being on TV too much would end his outside shot at people taking him serious.

  • http://twitter.com/Big_Taters Big Taters

    1. O’Reilly isn’t a journalist. Paul’s answer wasn’t “I only go on journalist programming”. He was making a factual statement.

    2. O’Reilly may have invited him via his show, but thats only effective if Ron Paul watches the show, which I am sure he doesn’t. So, to say a blanket invitation on his show is a formal invitation is silly.

    3. That twit that was interviewing Paul had a childish grin on his face the whole time. That, to me, would be telling enough that O’Reilly plans to do nothing but belittle Paul.

I don’t think many of you watch “The Factor” on a regular basis. Yes Bill has had his moments of talking over people and cutting their mics and he became notorious for that, but he more often than not gives people a fair chance to share their thoughts.
Paul can’t complain that he is ignored if he’s skipping an opportunity to speak to 3 million + people just because he doesn’t like the host’s style.

Paul is right.  O’Reilly’s quick format where you get your 3 answers in 10 second clips is pointless.

Agreed.    While I’m not fan of O’Reilly his interviewing style has improved in the past few years.   Paul should see this is an opportunity.

Paul is too independent to put up with O’Reilly’s obnouxous ‘ pappa knows best ‘ attitude, as are most thinking, or themselves, people.

He’s been on Bill O’Reilly before and Bill yelled loudly and belligerently about how he doesn’t care or want to hear about the history of US intervention in Iran.  If a person is not interested in tracing the steps back from where we came from, he probably shouldn’t have a job earning money as political and news analyst.  How much can a person really analyze with that kind of attitude?

  • http://www.facebook.com/danielpaulrules Daniel Paul

If America had more critical citizens, O’Reilly would be lucky to have a job at the National Inquirer.  Since so many here are dominated by fear, he gets to tell his ridiculous stories of how a country which hasn’t attacked another nation in over 100 years, Iran, is going to pepper the US and Israel with nuclear bombs on a show that lots of people watch.  This shows popularity is one of the many strong examples of the sad state of affairs we’re in.

  • Anonymous

Let me give you a couple of things to think about.
O’Reilly is documented as the most popular cable news guy out there.
Ron Paul needs O’Reilly. O’Reilly doesn’t need Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is insulting a whole lot of people’s opinion of a very popular media figure. Is that wise for a Presidential candidate.?
I like a lot of what Ron Paul is about, but things like this damage my opinion of him.

  • Anonymous

If O’Reilly isn’t a journalist, he’s about as close as you can get for a news commentator. That’s what I don’t get about “O’Reilly isn’t a journalist” or why Ron Paul would avoid him.

Look up Bill O’Reilly’s bio. Apparently you don’t know anything at all about him.

It has been amusing going through the comments here. They want to beat O’Reilly down, but they really don’t have any idea why. It’s the hate first, ask questions later crowd.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, it’s not the smartest thing in Ron Paul’s position.

  • Anonymous

He didn’t whine. He said the media establishment is afraid of him. So Bill O’ sends his producer and Ron got to answer the Iran Nuke question and the Gold question without being interrupted. He shut him down because he got his exposure on his terms.

  • Michael Ketelaars

I don’t think Paul sees a point in it. O’Reilly makes no effort to try and understand Paul’s gold argument (or any argument – he just wants to mock the man) but, he keeps asking about gold with no intent to listen. It’s the most simple concept but, they laugh at the idea. What good would it do Paul to go talk with him? It would be a waste of time. His viewers must be just as idiotic. That’s why they listen.

Gold/Silver are physical things. Today’s currency is paper that can be printed or a number that can be made bigger by adding zeros into a computer. When this happens it makes all the US money floating around the world less valuable (more money to represent the same end value… it’s like making the pieces in a pie smaller – same amount of pie – less pie for each). Gold/Silver, since they are real – cannot be made. It’s a set amount – and because of that it creates monetary stability and keeps value constant and real. The Fed has made a mess out of the monetary system but, are all to blind to see.

With a gold standard – you can still have paper money if you wish but, each note has to represent a value in gold. Gold that is sitting in the bank in which the note came from. That way a can of coke doesn’t cost 100x the amount 60 years later. It would cost the same. Stability. It’s important. America will wake up eventually… when it’s too late.

I wouldn’t go on that damned show either.  Nor Rachel’s.  Nor Chris Matthews.  Nor Lawrence O’Donnell.  It’s all a planned attack, like a sleazy lawyer would do.  Ed Shultz would do it, too, if he were smart enough.  Hannity tries, but just comes off like a smarmy little bastid.

  • Anonymous

Heck, I don’t want to beat him down.  I enjoy his show from time to time and it can be entertaining.  Nobody’s perfect, sometimes being on TV has a way of shining a light on a persons less admirable aspects.  O’Reilly never would have survived so long without a few positives, as well.

  • banh

NonElite, Ron Paul is the most intelligent and well-informed candidate on EITHER side of the 2012 race. However, the explanations for his positions do not match up with a Bill O’Reilly hatchet-job interview. RP knows exactly how O’Reilly operates, and he chooses to not play this game with a NeoCon like O’Reilly.

I fully support Ron Paul’s choice. Maybe O’Reilly is most popular because he turns his interviews into a debate, and most viewers like that kind of excitement, like a journalistic duel, bullfight or gladiators . You know, like the brawls on Jerry Springer.. (-:  Ron Paul also knows that O’Reilly will fight dirty, like he usually does. NeoCONS don’t like Ron Paul.. O’Reilly’s one of the attack dogs.

  • Roy Rogers

Billy Oreilly is an elitist Ivy Leage punk who obviously does not understand History or economics 101. For your information slime bag the Federal Reserve Act was in 1913. It was created after the scare or 1909 caused by the same bankers who through back door secretive deals managed to gain control of the strings of our money supply. Congress is the only one that the Constitution allows to print our money. In the 1930′s the Fed began a process to try to take the dollar off the gold standard. Up until this time for every dollar the Fed had they had to have gold to back that dollar up. This kept them in line and gave a little more accountability then what ponsi scheme they have going on today. Now they can create as much money as they want. For every dollar they print the private bankers at the Fed get interest payments from the United States treasury. We pay them 5% to print our money. They take something of no value and call it legal tender with nothing to back it. I wish this was the end of the story but it is not. The fed now recently has a new scam up their sleeves called quantitative easing We have been graced with two of these scams thus far and it looks like Benjamin Franklin Bernaky plans a 3rd one. Under this scam they lend money directly to banks like Goldman Sachs but with no interest charged to them and then Goldmans sells that money to the US  treasury but at a huge cost. And along comes a spider because Goldmans stock goes up and then they invest in the stock market keeping it artificially going up. The only problem is the US is broke and the money we now borrow is paying just the interest on the money that the fed has thieved us with.

O’Reilly is a joke.    His show is one of the worse shows on TV.     I am ashamed that there was a time when I actually watched it.   Going on 7 years sober!

He pretends to be intellicutal, but then he gets people on his show and he just basically talks over them, and just wants to lecture them.    Always saying – well we don’t have much time, to keep people from making points.

    It’s a disgraceful TV show.

  • R. Braaten

It reminds me of the time Ron Paul went on “the view” back in ’07, They all attacked him right off the bat about his pro-life views.  He could barely get a word in. What the hell does the pro-life deal have to do with the future of our country?  They only had him on the show to get all the women viewers to get pissed off and have a bad opinion of him because of one of his many views. That’s why he may be a little cautious about going on a show like O’Reily’s. I believe RP is doing things perfectly this time around.

  • trisailer

Ron Paul is not a racist. He has said many times that two of his personal hero’s are Dr. King and Rosa Parks. Other than the written comment in a newsletter that he didn’t write there is absolutely no shred of evidence that RP is a racist.

They don’t like O’Reilly because he tells bold faced lies to the American people. He said he read the Constitution and there is no reference gold and silver. Then says Paul misinterprets Article 1 sec. 10 referencing gold AND silver. Watters states Article 1 sec. 8 verbatim, then skims over section 10.

As stated above repeatedly, there could never, ever, be a debate between O’Reilly and anyone else.  It is rare that O’Reilly even engages an individual with contrary opinion in what could be described as “civil discourse”.  (BTW … O’Reilly may have many viewers, but he is not “top-tier” mainstream media.

There’s no reason for Dr. Paul to continue to subject himself to O’Reilly’s mistreatment on his show.  If O’Reilly wants to actually debate Dr. Paul, he should do so in some other environment where O’Reilly can’t just interrupt Paul and yell over the top of him whenever he feels like it.  O’Reilly has already proven in the past that he just isn’t level-headed enough to listen to Paul, and O’Reilly has explicitly said he isn’t willing to give Ron Paul enough time to express the intricacies of his opinions.

  • Dferreira1975

Bill O’Reilly is a fool though.  Come on.. Kenisian?  What?  The man accused Ron Paul of not understanding the Constitution.  That’s something NO ONE had ever dared to say, because they know that he’d school them in the Constitution and then get someone to change their huggies after they soil them.

Bill Doesn’t know anything about economics and certainly has no chance of understanding what Dr Paul is talking about.
Besides. Bill O’Reilly isn’t even a journalist.  He’s an opinion show host.  In other words, he’t not required to provide those pesky little facts or anything.  He’s just required to give you your opinion..  I mean.. give his opinion.

I agree. I didn’t like how Billo used this form of journalism to get his last little insult in at the end of the clip, so I did a little hunting. The second comment on this link explains the concept Paul is defending in the Constitution fairly well. Please read if you would like to learn!

I’ve seen Paul on the O’Reilly show before and he has been repeatedly interrupted and talked over.  It wasn’t an interrogation per se, but one could argue it was similar to that.  Also, O’Reilly began going out of his way to invite Paul onto the show only after the Ames straw poll and statements about the lack of media attention.  I think people are smart enough to look back a little and see this is really more of a defensive ploy to try and illegitimize the observations of Paul receiving a lack of media attention.

I am a Ron Paul supporter just so everyone knows.  One thing I don’t understand is how some people exhibit such hatred towards Paul.  Having a disagreement over policy is one thing that is pretty acceptable to me (everyone has a right to their own thoughts and beliefs), but he is such a nice guy and consistent in his worldview that I cannot grasp the hatred some people exhibit towards him.

Bill already did an interview with Ron Paul and Bill acted like the rude jackass and would not let him finish his view point.. Bill has an agenda against Ron Paul…

So Bill O’Reilly is whining and crying that Ron Paul didn’t accept his invite.  Grow up Bill.  Get over yourself.

Yeah, NonElite. Facts are sure pesky things when they go against your idealogy.
I see objective reality (including an understanding of history) is rather distasteful to you.
There are real long term consequences when the US flippantly involves itself in the internal affairs of other countries.  And bombing and invasion are not the follow up remedies, it only makes things worse.

Then why is Bill O’Reilly making so much hay over this?   Let’s cut through the fog here, this is as much about O’Reilly’s ego now as it is about an invitation wasn’t accepted.
If a person doesn”t get a guest on their show, don’t start smearing the person.  How many other talk shows do that to guests?

You come across looking like a moron when paul wasn’t the one “complaining” about media coverage.  It’s so freakin obvious and disrespectful us “tiny fraction” of supporters bombarded the news agencies with this showing facts and how biased they are.  Let ron paul speak the good message that needs to be spoken and let us handle the trenches and the dirty work because that is how much we care.  So no Ron Paul is not complaining about the media and their coverage Ron Paul supporters and America is waking up to the medias lies and propoganda.

Ron Paul doesn’t like you, because you’re a liar and have no manners. If Dr. Paul is the “gold standard” of people, surely O’Reilly is the rat-semen-mixed-with-pus-cow-farts-poison-and-radioactive-subtances standard of person.

Hrmmm although Fox reported correct on the Constitution that Congress shall have the power to coin money and regulate the value thereof etc…it almost seems like the Federal Reserve Bank is regulating our currency not Congress, and the Reserve is a private entity that, well… isn’t being regulated.
Anybody says they are being regulated, I would love to see an audit report. Thanks.
