Ron Paul: Obama ‘Brings The Modern Presidency Dangerously Close To An Elective Dictatorship’

VIDEO
» 90 comments

Texas Rep. Ron Paul went on Power and Money late Tuesday night and discussed a wide range of topics with host David Asman, including a clarification on his comments from Nov. 7 where he said President Obama‘s use of Executive Orders to enact parts of his jobs bill in a piecemeal manner, “brings the modern presidency dangerously close to an elective dictatorship.”

When pressed by Asman on the comments, Dr. Paul, who, according to Real Clear Politics, is currently polling at around 8.3% but won the latest Iowa straw poll, didn’t shy away. “[President Obama] was very bold about it,” he said, of Obama circumventing Congress. “That is arrogant. It is flaunting the Constitution and the whole principle of how we’re supposed to operate. The idea they can just do this and take over the legislative function and brag about it — and Congress does nothing and the courts do nothing — [it's] very, very bad.”

After Asman asked Paul about his use of the “dictatorial” language in his remarks on Monday, Paul explained that it’s not such a far-fetched accusation. “If he writes these laws and he doesn’t do it the right way, he’s certainly verging in that direction. He’s dictatorial, is what he is. But this is what our government is all about. Everybody’s telling the people what to do.”

    Poor Ron Paul, he’s not accustomed to being the least crazy person in an election.

    He could almost get my vote if he would only call for the repeal of the 17th Amendment.

  • Valkyie101

    Seems like Congressman Paul, a member of Congress, has a lot of nerve blaming Obama for the lack of progresss with respect to any law making action since the House is fully disfunctional and is doing absolutely nothing. At least Obama is not satisfied with Republican caused gridlock.

  • Anonymous

    Just because congress has the ability to make laws, doesn’t mean it should. This is no justification for the Obama administration to attempt to circumvent the separation of powers.

    Just what has your precious Senate been up to?  Where is all the legislation from Harry’s side of the branch?

  • Someone

    The house is not dysfunctional. It is a matter of fact that Obama does not propose anything appealing to both sides. Instead he uses his executive orders to enforce things that many Americans disagree upon.

    That is very perceptive. must be terribly disconcerting to him.

    What scares me the most is what happens if we continue to have a divided nonfunctional polarized government that refuses to do what is best for the American people even if it means continued suffering.what happens if messages from the voting booth are not enough?

    What happens if as the years go by things stay bad or get worse,our standing in the world continues to fall,our standard of living continues to fall,more and more are in poverty with a government that can’t afford to help them?

    Executive orders are an end run around a dysfunctional congress but that should not be a justification for them,what it should be is a wake up call to our elected representatives that they must change their ways and how they perceive government to function,what it is there for,and not for their own benefit versus benefiting the American people.

    What happens if the American people decide that executive orders are an acceptable way to govern,a justifiable action by the president?

    It is not too far of a comparison to look at Germany after World War One.Absent real change,real action,real improvement in this country,what will happen?What will people be willing to accept say ten maybe fifteen years from now if those years have been like that last several?

  • Anonymous

    “Just because congress has the ability to make laws, doesn’t mean it should. ”

    That in a nutshell describes the Republican approach to government and explains why things are so badly f—ed up. That one party — which controls one of our legislative bodies and has virtual veto power in the other — finds governing an expendable function of its duties is simply a disgrace.

    No, you are wrong. Obama has a duty to utilize whatever Constitutional means he has at his disposal to help the situation because a majority of our Constitutionally elected congress is dabbling in sedition.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NWVKX2P2QBPQ6FHQHCHVIC2ALQ Fedup in Florida

    It also means that you are wetting your pants with joy, if you look at the results from all over the country I would suggest to you that they are mixed with victories coming to both sides…  The only real victory that your side clearly won yesterday was in the union legislation repeal in Ohio while at the same time those same voters rejected the president’s healthcare plan.   The pro-life bill in Mississippi was so poorly written that even pro-lifers could not support it.. beyond that for the so called voter’s rights victory in Maine you side got your clocks cleaned in Mississippi, In Arizona a republican was replaced with another republican, republicans picked up substantial gains in seats in the legislators of Mississippi and Virginia while only giving up one seat in New Jersey…  Hardly an evening worth soiling your pants over… but, I guess you did not read all of the results, just those that MM is crowing about.

  • nunyabizness71

    You can’t answer the question so you call me a retard?  And then dismiss me out of spite?  Wow.  Talk about a five year old.

  • Valkyie101

    Well, yes, the national consensus is, in fact, that our Congress is dysfunctional and is the primary problem, not Obama. He has been substantially powerless on domestic matters since the mid-terms, while Congress wants to discuss important topics like defunding big bird and blaming the unemployed for the lack of reasonable paying jobs. And just a couple months ago the republican caucus, all apparently in an attempt to make Obama look bad, tried to put our nation into default. No way that flies.

  • Valkyie101

    You are not being too objective if your position is that the republican controlled house has been on the ball. They have the lowest approval rating in history, for good reason. And, again, just a couple months ago the republican caucus tried to put our nation into default for the first time in our nation’s history. And you and Paul, a member of that dysfunctional legislative body, want to blame Obama? Sure.

  • Valkyie101

    The polls are pretty clearly showing the blame falling mostly on the republicans in congress who would rather sink our economy than allow Obama a second term.

  • Anonymous

    Calling Executive Orders unconstitutional based on enumerated powers shows a basic lack of understanding of American History and basic civics. It shows the absolutism that is endemic of a Ron Paul supporter, and the lack of intellectual curiosity of a libertarian.

    Grow up, read up on the Supreme Court, take a look at the 200+ years between the Constitution and today. Ron Paul is an idiot.

  • THINK

    The democrats had total control and were too afraid to do anything with it. You can toss around big words if you feel it makes you feel better but the truth of the matter is the Democrats in power now are shameful cowards. I have to admit its a shame. I used to be a democrat until I saw all the bogus Chicago style deals going on. I woke up….maybe its time you do too!

  • CarmanK

    Ron Paul is a dangerous old fool who ought to retire before he shames himself. He sat back while Rick Perry turned TX into the go to state  for corruption and political favors. Perry appointed 921 of his campaign contribtuors to GOVT JOBS worth nearly 69mn tax payer dollars. He awarded regencies to 200 political buds who in turn get FREE TUITION at state universities for their kids. He sat silent as Perry turned over a whole govt agency to a political ally who happened to be a real estate developer. the agency deals with Real Estate abuse of consumers i.e. homes that are poorly contructed. Obama is an EXECUTIVE, he has the power over the administration of the govt. He is acting within his authority to get grants out there, authorized by law, which will help create jobs. He is negotiating with the private sector to create jobs. It is his job to RUN the govt agencies. Ron Paul sits silent while the repugs in MI ( true fascists) are taking away the constitutional rights of people. EMERG FINAn managers are the water carriers for the GROVER NORQUIST GANG that want to TAX WITHOut representation.

  • Jamiedirette

    Wow, what a display of superior intellect you and your like are showing. You have no real argument against what Ron Paul is saying so I guess this is what we get. Even the few people who try to act halfway intelligent with a left wing or for that matter right wing talking point fail miserably. Congrats to all! None of you have a clue what Ron Paul stands for except what some talking head told you. I guarantee none of you have done more then 10 minutes worth of research on this man to find out what and why he believes this country is failing at so many levels. I suggest you try and learn something before making an uninformed comment.

    We’re already in default.  We sell our treasuries and bonds to the Fed so we can cut checks for Social Security and foriegn wars.  We sell ourselves our own junk bonds?  Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama are all guilty of this.

  • THINK

    You need to check your facts. BOTH Republicans and Democrats almost caused the default. No one party is any more guilty of that than the other. About polls be careful to quote those. You can skew and play with the numbers to make it look any way you want. I am sure I can write a poll that says 100% of America thinks big bird would be the next best candidate. Look at the atrocities that have been committed in the name of global warming. All the studies that were performed and the data that did not support the goal of the study was labeled as erroneous and bad data. Sure it comes out in time, but the damage is done.

  • THINK

    Blame Blame Blame its never MY president that does anything wrong…..you need to learn the meaning of the word accountability!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TSZG5WWQ225QOA2TKKXXAGJLQ4 AdamH

    If adhering to the Constitution, getting out of foriegn wars, and balancing the budget are crazy, consider me nuts

  • Valkyie101

    Fillibuster? The dems never got the super majority in the Senate that the republicans claimed they needed, even with Obama’s big win, to constitute a mandate. You can not re-write the republicans 3 year history of scorched earth Obama opposition. Thus, a record number of fillibusters, record number of delayed or denied appointments, and a stated republican goal of blocking everything Obama.

  • THINK

    Wow you sound scared of someone who represents thought and sanity. Sad….Sad!

  • Valkyie101

    Don’t be naive. It is the stated goal of republicans to bring Obama (and apparently our nation) to ”Waterloo”. Fortunately, most Americans do not go for that.

    well, aren’t most third world countries run by dictators?  that’s what obama is doing to the usa.  i think he should just declare marshall law and he could stay in power for decades.

  • Valkyie101

    Usually default is associated with failure to pay what is due. Are you suggesting the US does not do that?

  • Valkyie101

    Its not about “blame” but “fault”, and “justice”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-P-Ivy/1570621089 Michael P. Ivy

    As Paul has forcefully argued and many times, The FED’s purchase of US Treasuries already constitutes default and by any measure this is why the debt was downgraded.  And if the way out is to continue executing the Ponzi without consequence and ignore austerity, then another downgrade is almost certain.  IMO we ought to get past the dysfunctionality of blame and recognize the infinitely more important monetary crisis and the debt problem arriving from too much government spending which everybody knows the tax payer will never be able to honor, given 9% unemployment and 2% growth.  Ascertaining blame is not going to rectify a debt to GDP ratio greater than 1, or, address the reality that the government, all else equal, is essentially insolvent.  Ron Paul has been explaining this for decades.  How much longer can we afford to ignore him?

  • Anonymous

    I am not being objective because the approval rating is low? The approval rating is for both houses Val. I don’t approve either but it is because the senate blocks everything the house sends over. Yes approval rating is deserved. Worst senate ever. As for the default we have been heading there for a while and due to both houses but mostly cause by liberal spending. Then we got Obama and he put it into overdrive, so yes I most certainly do blame Obama.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IC7HRBJRXKA7IKTTZS5W3UIECQ Agent of Truth

    And George Bush Jr, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove didn’t????  Even now, Rove and the GOP are working to get back to having an elective dictatorship like they had during the years of dubya.

    Surely you have heard the words conference committee..  put something out of the senate, stop just saying that because we can’t have every inch of our way we will just sit back and do nothing…  Harry needs to get to work doing the business of the people, he will have to find compromise that will gain republican support in the Senate and then be worked out in the committee! Period!

    “Sorry America we don’t have a super majority so we will just sit back and watch the country go to hell!”-Harry Reid.

  • LarryB

    You are blaming Ron Paul for what exactly? How was he supposed to stop Perry’s many blunders? Paul has been very outspoken against Perry’s performance during the debates. There are only so many battles one person can fight, and I think Paul has had his hands full trying to bring about some real positive change- bringing home our troops, cutting the ridiculous amounts of money spent on our unconstitutional approach to defense, getting more transparency from the FED, protecting our civil liberties, downsizing government. Of course, as an Obama apologist, you obviously disagree with those stances since Ron Paul’s position is the opposite of Obama’s (not to mention many of the Neo-Cons…how’s that for irony?). If you believe those positions make Dr. Paul a “dangerous old fool,” then you are obviously interested in protecting the status quo, a big government that tells you how to think and what to think and has no interest in upholding the Constitution of the United States. If that is the case, it is obvious who is the fool.

  • Anonymous

    You might want to reassess how many bills that Mr. Harry Reid has sitting in his office.

    It’s not the Congress that hasn’t passed a budget in more than 350 days. That would be the Obama administration.

  • Anonymous

    If Ohio’s law is anything like WI’s all it means is that local governments are going to have: a) less funds to work with or b) will have to increase taxes.

    Pro-life groups in MS didn’t even like the amendment legislation so there is no victory for abortion rights. I’m sure the bill will be re-worked and then passed, to figure a way the IVF situation as even doctors didn’t like that.

    Not exactly an evening to brag about.

    Democrats have this false notion that the more bills and laws we pass, the more we’re “getting done.”

    That’s absolutely stupid in my mind.

    I bet some of you wish the Patriot Act would not have gotten passed.

    I bet some of you wish the authorization for force in Iraq had not been passed.

    Somehow in a Democrats mob-rule mind, the Republicans finally saying no to something is obstructionism.

    Last I heard I can elect people to congress to vote no and I do and I have an I will continue too.

    Deal with it you morally corrupt tyrants.

    Everything you believe in and stand for requires government force.

    Wish you’d at least study a few things.
    During Carter’s term in office the percentage of the National Debt as part of GDP went down by 3.3%
    During Clinton’s first term it went down by .7%
    During Clinton’s second term it went down 9.0%

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    As for Reagan it went up 11.3% during his first term.
    Reagan’s second term it went up 9.3%
    During Bush Sr’s term it went up 13.0%
    During Dumbya’s first term it went up 7.1%
    During his second term it went up 20.7%
    Please note with the GDP going down that means that they were cutting the deficits.
    When they went up, it meant running up the deficits even higher. The last time a Republican actually had a reduction in the deficit was during Nixon’s first term.3%
    Before that Eisenhower’s first term we had a 11% Reduction.
    During JFK’s & Johnson’s terms the Democrats reduced the deficits by 8.3% each term.
    So when you babble about the “Tax & Spend” Liberals you might be correct.We are actually fiscal conservatives.
    But we have fun when we have the “Tax Cut & Spend Even More” Republican’s that “Claim” that they are fiscal conservatives. But as you can tell increasing the debt as a percentage of GDP from 7.1% all the way up to 20.1% tells most people that you/the GOP is nothing but a fiscal conservative.
  • Mari2JJ
    Actually, go to any Republican precinct and you will probably hear that our main agenda is the failure of Obama’s presidency, never mind if it drags our country into oblivion.  What a sad day for Republican values when we care less about our country and are totally focused on the defeat of this “black dude.  In fact, even expressing in precinct meetings that his failure is the top priority of our party.  Sad values our  party is demonstrating and totally racist.  It is like we have traded places with the Dixiecrats in our disgusting racist swill.
    Is ‘THINK’ an ironic name? Republicans couldn’t even get out of their own way, when it came to the debt limit. Bachmann wanted to default end of story, there were a few congressmen like Mike Pence leading cheers for a Tea Party gathering of 30 people (sad really) chanting, ‘cut it or shut it’. 4 days before the deadline Boehner was fighting tooth and nail to get some right wing bill, the 217 votes needed to pass a plan that was already rejected by 55 senators. So who was playing politics?!?
    The intent of having the state legislatures select the US Senator for their state was to provide another ‘balance’ between the good of the states and the whim of the people. Why is it so difficult to understand the compromises made in 1787 when the Constitution was written and ratified? Americans are enanomored by democracy when democray was never the intention nor is it a system that will last over time. The Republic with it checks and balances might but it has been subverted by democracy and now socialism spearheaded by do-gooders wishing to guarentee results regardless of effort of ability.
