2011′s List Of Banished Words Includes Palinisms

Fox News Channel this morning went over a list of words and phrases that one is not to use in the new year lest one wishes to die a long and horrible death. Released today, Lake Superior State University’s 36th annual “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness” is compiled using the public’s own input regarding words and phrases that they find “so over” (BANNED). Among the phrases is modern-day bard Sarah Palin‘s infamous creation of the word “refudiate” – a portmanteau combining “refuse” and “repudiate.” Another one of Palin’s go-to phrases – “Mama Grizzlies” – also managed to make the list.

Other banned words and phrases include “viral”, “epic”, “fail” (and, thus, we suppose, the phrase “EPIC FAIL”), and “I’m just sayin’” – basically, all terms often used online by people who fail to properly socialize offline. Using “Facebook” and “Google” as verbs were also deemed much too obnoxious, even though both sound so much nicer than “stalk” or “aggressively avoid work.”

Our vote goes to the use of “namaste” by people who have just discovered Mommy ‘n Me Yoga as well as “you look tired.”

How about the overused ” awesome ” ?

  • TangledThorns

Hope and change should be added too.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

They left off socialist, muslim, anti-christ, Ozero, Hitler, Glenn Beck, 2012, Libs (as a derogatory term), Olby, Olbermann, November, death panel, spin (because apparently anytime you beat a right-winger in debate it’s spin), gotcha, journolist, communist, tax cuts, will of the American people and I want my country back.

No, the missing word is “snarky,” which is basically the fashionably excuse used by snot-nosed brats to rationalize their obnoxious commentary. I get the uncontrollable urge to break something tasteful every time I see or hear that word.

It would be put to better use on a jar of Vaseline!

  • Thelonious Funk

I’d get rid of the words, ‘tiny’ and ‘penis’.

I’m tired of constantly hearing them, especially when used in the same sentence.

One the opposite side of the coin, the words I want used the most are “arrogant asses who think they have some sort of divine authority to tell people what words they should or shouldn’t use when they speak should pound sand”.

Viral isn’t overused, it’s misused. “Viral” has become the new “ironic”. I doubt anyone will ever use the term correctly ever again.

I think pretty much every one of these words and phrases are shortcuts to speaking, writingl what I’m thinking one should do is NOT rely on any catch phrase but instead express themselves as much as possible with words that they thought of, not some cliched catchphrase.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leah-Ma/1391341060 Leah Ma

I agree with Lynda. People keep labeling others and since they either don’t know the true definition of the word they’re using (Socialist for example) or they’re using the word where it doesn’t apply (Hitler) I too would like to see them just use proper descriptive terms.
Do you think that’s beyond their writing ability? Frankly, I think it is. I don’t think they could write about people they don’t like without using stupid, inappropriate descriptive names. Every time I hear someone call Obama a Socialist I want to break a vase over their heads–not because I’m feeling sorry for Obama but because I’m feeling sorry for all the true Socialists that have just been so badly insulted! If Obama’s a Socialist, then I’m a Woodpecker!
