whether you don’t like palin or not, why does this so easily translate into an attack on religion/god as a whole from the left? i generally consider myself to be a liberal as far as government is concerned but whenever the attacks on religion start, the abject hatred from the ‘left’ puts me smack in a position where i am disgusted w/the people i have on most other issues, sided with.

Benjamin Franklin was a Deist, Thomas Paine was an atheist, George Washington may have been a Deist and it’s believed that John Adams may have been an atheist.

You’ll find that not all or even the majority of the founding fathers weren’t Christians but that the most widely and influential known were the least religious or most outspoken against organized religion.

The nation has some obligation to keep churches from acting in such a fashion as to prevent them from denyng others the free exercise.

Actually, I think most of us do, Michelle. The Constitution grants power and protection to people by limiting the government. In this case, it means not allowing the government to make an established order of religion, for example the Church of England, as it once was. A corollary to no establishment is free exercise of belief. The problem with rightists is that they fail to draw a proper line between belief and practice. Polygamy is a very good example of that. Another would be laws prohibiting the wholesale slaughter of “gentiles” to honor good. Mountain Meadow is a good example of that.

You couldn’t be more right. It’s like the immigration bill, they twist it to support their template and just expect the rest of us to accept it’s correct. Maybe their mindless minions will, but those of us with a brain won’t

I think a lot of liberals are clinging to their “seperation of church and state” talking points, and they don’t even understand what that really means.
