Sen. Mark Udall Wants Mixed-Party Seating At The State Of The Union

Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall has a hope-y change-y idea for toning down the discord in Washington: he wants to seat Republicans and Democrats together at this year’s State of the Union speech.

In keeping with tradition, Democrats and Republicans sit on opposite sides during the SOTU, making for wonderful television moments where one side stands and cheers as the other side sits on their hands and remain stone-faced. Udall seems intent on messing that up:

“Instead of sitting in our usual partisan divide, let us agree to have Democrats and Republicans sitting side by side,” Udall wrote in a letter to colleagues. “The choreographed standing and clapping of one side of the room — while the other side sits — is unbecoming of a serious institution.”

Is it a serious suggestion, or–as Rachel Weiner asks in the Washington Post–is it a stunt

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) released a statement of support, saying he hopes “this new tradition can remind us that, no matter what our differences, we all come to Congress with the nation’s best interests at heart.”

The White House told ABC the idea’s not being given any “serious thought.”

Isn’t partisan sitting in Congress a hold over from the British parliament?

If we didn’t keep the powdered wigs, lead-based face powder, or knickerbockers, why should we continue this charade? Might keep the Joe Wilson’s of Congress from making an ass of themselves in front of the nation.

This is more from the (D) to get back up to the line . They fell so far in NOV. They want to get past that ballot box that said “We don’t like your policy ” They’re have lost a huge amount of trust . And are crawling back up to the line anyway they can .

This is a decent idea in concept, but I think I have a better one. The way it is currently run is like watching 2 high schools in the same gym watching a basketball game. One side stands and claps while the others stay silent. Then 3 minutes later the reverse. My stomach aches watching this childish behavior from the leaders of the greatest country on earth. Our leaders should act accordingly. Here is a simple solution. Everybody in the room, sit on your ass and shut up the entire time the president gives the state of the union address and then when he is finished and leaving the podium, everybody quietly go the fck home. This is serious business and the circus atmosphere needs to stop.

Yes it does. But barring your suggestion, I’ll take Udall’s.

    I think it should be boy-girl boy-girl.

If there aren’t enough girls they can hire some strippers.

If the State of the Union weren’t such a consitent, wanton act of bloviating BS I would agree. Frankly, the more yelling at each other they do in honest outrage, the better off we will all be. The smiling, bi-partisan, go-along-get-along, sell out the taxpayer ane we all get paid is what got us into this mess. The angrier and nastier it gets, the more chance we have theat they will call BS on each other.

That could be dangerous. Imagine a joker next to you screamed out, “You lie”.. There would be temptation to shut him up with any mean necessary.

But will it prevent the president from insulting the Supreme Court? Aren’t several justices planning to stay away this year?

I guess if Udall and the rest of socialistdems have mixed party seating maybe they think they can try and fool us as to just how outnumbered the left wing is. When you have over three hundred people on one side of the house floor not jumping up every ten seconds could be very embrassing to the dem myrmidons.

I have no clue what you are talking about. At the State of the Union Address, no back and forth conversations take place. It’s simply a televised speech by the president to the nation. No debates or questions.

Ever the entrepreneur, I rather like the idea of seeing Democrats being made to sit with Republicans IF the state of the union can be made into a pay-per-view event. The fight that would break out would make the lies told and the partisan inuendo in the speech easier to bear, as well. I’d give $$ to see Barney Frank try to scratch Issa’s eyes out and see John Boehner bonk Nancy Pelosi with his gavel.

I think you’ve hit on the motive.
