Welp, it’s come to this. With both Seth Meyers and Bill Hader leaving Saturday Night Live, we finally had to say goodbye to both Meyers’ “Weekend Update” anchoring as well as Hader’s popular “Stefon” character. And boy did SNL send them both off with a bang.
Stefon entered the “Weekend Update” sketch to give his usual spiel as the City Correspondent, detailing ridiculous NYC hot-spots for those seeking some new thrills, but when he went to give one final goodbye to his beloved colleague in the anchor chair, he disappeared quickly, leaving a conflicted Meyers in tears. Guest co-anchor Amy Poehler demanded Meyers follow his heart and finally give in to Stefon’s advances.
And thus came a cinematic tale of how Meyers and Stefon came to become one. The “Weekend Update” anchor ran through the streets of New York, eventually crashing a wedding between Stefon and… Anderson Cooper.
Having fought off the CNN anchor and a crowd of Stefon’s rag-tag clubbing friends, Meyers and his true love returned to 30 Rockefeller Plaza. It was then that they were met with a shower of confetti from the SNL cast, celebrating the fictional wedding of the two characters… as well as the end of a real-life partnership that had become a staple of the show’s last few seasons.
