Wait, What? Family Ties Mom Slams Mrs. Garrett From Facts Of Life At TV Land Awards

At the TV Land Awards, actress Charlotte Rae, perhaps better known as “Mrs. Garrett,” gave a heartfelt speech about how she proud she was of her fellow Facts of Life castmembers, whom she repeatedly referred to as “her girls.” Awww, etc. At one point, Rae expressed her delight at how everyone on the show turned out “Straight. Straight!” Feels quite a bit like Thanksgiving dinner with the extended family, doesn’t it?

Later on in the ceremony, Meredith Baxter (“Elyse Keaton” from Family Ties, mother of TV’s most beloved Republican) cracked a joke about how she’s proud of her own castmates, even though not all of them turned out as “straight” as the Facts of Life Gang. Baxter recently came out as being lesbian

Now, we’re not sure whether there was any bitterness behind Baxter’s joke, but we (like prominent gay site Towleroad) are inclined to believe she meant straight as in “straight and narrow” rather than “breeder.”

It’s possible Miss Rae was simply happy non of her girls went on to be law breakers or liberals, you know ‘ the straight & narrow ‘ , not that she meant they weren’t gay.

Haha I was flipping through TV last night and saw this was on. Of course, I changed the channel, but you have to laugh at someone who’s sensitivity knows no bounds. Why should I care what a Family Ties star has to say about their life? And if I do care to know about a Family Ties star, it would be Michael J. Fox.

Some entertainment show had an interview with the cast of Facts of Life right after they taped the awards and when asked about her comments, Charlotte Rae said she meant straight and narrow, and she didn’t even realize her comments could have been interpreted differently. When the others explained how they could have been taken, she was embarrassed as all get out.

I agree with Alex on this one. I don’t think it was some attack. She just meant straight and narrow.

I remember waaaay back in the mid ’80′s David Letterman used to do a bit called “Dave’s Book Mobile” (with that gruff but luvable Gus, the bookmobile driver). At any rate, in the bit Dave would introduce a series of fake books. I remember a couple in particular (one: “1001 Euphemisms to Describe Merryl Streep’s Face Before Admitting that She’s Really Quite Plain Looking”). Another–and the one relevant to this post–was a joke at the expense of the girls from the Facts of Life collective weight issue: “The Facts of Life Diet” with a cover featuring all four of the girls from the show in their latter porkier incarnations. I couldn’t imagine Letterman (or any of the late-night comics making a joke like that today).

MEREDITH BB has said some other rather defensive things since coming out, so suffice it to say that she just naturally jumps the gun a bit. But she really needs to think twice before reacting.
