Watch: American Hikers Freed By Iran Run Off Plane To Freedom In Oman
After more than twenty-six months of imprisonment, and then several more weeks of uncertainty, the two American hikers being held as spies in Iran have been released today. Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, were immediately flown to Oman where freedom and their families waited. The two arrived just before midnight local time, exiting the plane in a near run, before being ushered of without making statements to reporters. According to MSNBC , the two ”appeared thin, but in good health.”
The men’s release marks the end of several weeks of diplomatic discussions made difficult by Iran’s larger political ambitions. A $1 million bail-for-freedom was ultimately struck with the help of Switzerland and then Oman, and the men were let go as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prepared to face global leaders at the U.N.’s annual gathering this week.
“Today can only be described as the best day of our lives. We have waited for nearly 26 months for this moment, and the joy and relief we feel at Shane and Josh’s long awaited freedom knows no bounds,” said the Bauer and Fattal families in a statement. “We all want nothing more than to wrap Shane and Josh in our arms, catch up on two lost years, and make a new beginning for them all and all of us. ” And for making that possible, they were sure to thank the Sultan of Oman, his envoy and their lawyers.
