One of the speakers at the upcoming Republican National Convention is currently under an ethics investigation for accepting a campaign donation from Donald Trump‘s charity.
Among the speakers announced Thursday is Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. Bondi is an enthusiastic Trump supporter, endorsing him in March and saying “Donald and I have been friends for many years.” But it’s precisely that friendship that’s raised eyebrows in the past.
In 2013, Bondi’s office announced that it received two dozen consumer complaints about Trump University, and was considering joining the New York Attorney General’s lawsuit against the company. Four days later, Bondi’s Super PAC received $25,000 from the Donald Trump Foundation, despite it being against the law to accept cash from a charity. Her office eventually declined to bring charges.
In June 2016, Bondi was hit with ethics and Florida Bar complaints. Bondi, for her part, insists that she returned the donation when pointed out and made her decision impartially. “These attacks are without merit and I am confident it will be shown they have no basis in fact,” she said.
