In remarks to reporters on Capitol Hill, Republican Arizona Senator Jeff Flake said that Donald Trump‘s comments about Mexican-American judge Gonzalo Curiel could spark a “convention challenge” to his presidency.
For the past week, Trump has insisted that Curiel, a Mexican-American born in Indiana, should not be allowed to oversee the Trump University trial because of his heritage. “Let’s face it: meet the old Trump, just like the new Trump,” Flake said, according to the Associated Press. “We’ve got what we’ve got. That’s not somebody who can win the White House.”
“Where there’s no talk of a convention challenge or anything else, this might spur it,” he concluded.
Flake’s comments come the day after he was highly critical of Trump during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “His statements this week on the judge, that’s a new level,” he said. “It’s not just ill-informed, ignorant statements, but they suggest that when he’s president after November that perhaps he ought to go after that judge.”
