Food stories aren’t all about rarified kitchens, pedigreed chefs, and expensive ingredients. Food stories can, in fact, be a prism into the lives of the people we never talk about — on this site and elsewhere — which is why this profile of a Mexican immigrant named Marciala completely grabbed our interest. Marciala sells tamales out of her car in Chicago’s Logan Square to support her extended family, and in this video, she tells the story of why she came to America, what’s happened to her since she arrived, and why, even though she struggles each day to sell tamales and dodge the police, she’ll still give away her products to drunk people for free.
