Apparently, Hasbro isn’t watching a ton of Top Chef: Just Desserts, or they’d realize that the male to female pastry chef ratio is just as male-dominated as that of the savory chef world. And yet, girls still get the distinct privilege of playing with a pink and purple toy oven that miraculously bakes them cakes with a light bulb (although evidently they’ve evolved and the bulbs are no longer necessary).
And so, a 13-year-old girl is standing up for gender equality, making her own YouTube video and Change.org petition for Hasbro to begin gender-neutral marketing of the Easy Bake Oven. She began the petition in honor of her 4-year-old brother, who loves to bake, and asked for a dinosaur and an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas, but is concerned over why “there are no boys in the commercials.” Writes McKenna Pope in her petition:
“I want my brother to know that it’s not ‘wrong’ for him to want to be a chef, that it’s okay to go against what society believes to be appropriate. There are, as a matter of fact, a multitude of very talented and successful male culinary geniuses, i.e. Emeril, Gordon Ramsey, etc. Unfortunately, Hasbro has made going against the societal norm that girls are the ones in the kitchen even more difficult.”
Do precocious tweens uttering phrases like “is this really the message we want to send to our youth?” and “I thought that as a society we had far moved past that” and “we continue to force the stereotype” warm the cockles of your heart?
