South by Southwest is either the best time to be in Austin, or the worst, depending on how you look at it. On the one hand, it’s a huge festival of film, media, and music, all coming together in different permutations for one week in one of the greatest cities in the United States with awesome food and music, smart people, and great conferences. On the other hand, the traffic.
South by Southwest has 72,000 registrants and artists, and an estimated 250,000 people who show up to hang out and go to parties and events. This year, that’s all amplified because President Barack Obama is giving a keynote. That means tons of traffic and people watching his every move. Today, he stopped his motorcade to go to Torchy’s Tacos, a popular Austin chain. He ordered three tacos: Democrat (barbacoa), Republican (jalapeño sausage) and Independent (mushrooms) because how could he not, and bought tacos for his staff and Austin mayor Steve Adler.
Remember what happened when the president went to see Hamilton? Yeah. Torchy’s Tacos was already doing great, but now they certainly have nothing to worry about. Probably for a very long time.
