On last night’s Treme, Chef Janette Desautel (Kim Dickens) continued to enjoy the perks of culinary fame, which is to say: she ends the episode sad and alone, watching TV in a robe and drinking whiskey and eating crackers. The bloggers have descended and Chowhound has designated Desautel’s On The Avenue’s crawfish ravioli the best new dish in New Orleans. What does that mean exactly? It means 40+ orders of it going out a night. As Janette correctly notes, “No one can put it out right at this rate.”
The next night, they break their previous evening’s order record for the dish, and, as one line cook cashes in on a bet he made to that effect, Janette loses it. No room for clowns in her kitchen, and we finally see the typically good-natured chef crack down on her brigade.
Based on the preview for next week’s episode, it looks like Janette might walk out on her over-the-top restaurant but, alas, her restaurateur partner owns her name. What’s a chef to do? Stay tuned to find out.
