Nothing to jumpstart your Tuesday morning like a chipper Jay Rayner, reading aloud from his book A Greedy Man In A Hungry World. In this clip, he regales us with tales of his childhood, like that time a patient carved his “cock” out of wood and sent it to Jay’s mother. He reads: “One morning, my mother opened the post at the breakfast table to reveal a life-size wooden carving of an erect cock; the glands painted a delicate shade of purple over the wood’s natural grain.”
The nut of this chapter (the book is out May 23) is discovering what is natural. Rayner remembers learning about sexual and medical problems right out in the open as a child, many of which he calls “heartbreaking”. It’s apparent that his upbringing was not only loving, but that embracing one’s unique habits and thoughts was totally encouraged. His home was one in which nothing was too weird to share with the family, and there were no secrets — a great clip to release right on the heels of Mother’s Day, as it sounds like Rayner’s, while potentially a bit kooky, was a great one.
