We love it when chefs stop by the CNN Newsroom to discuss THE ISSUES. Marcus Samuelsson made an appearance this afternoon, to talk about Yes, Chef for the tenth time, yes, but also to chat about the difference he’s hoping his restaurant Red Rooster can make in the Harlem community in the wake of Sylvia Woods’ death. His resto is located just down the block from Sylvia’s and 80% of Red Rooster’s staffers come from Harlem, while Marcus himself lives there. The Ethopian-born chef is currently juggling preserving Harlem’s food traditions while making it palatable to a mainstream audience and balancing the soul food diet in an obesity-plagued community.
In an attempt to revitalize Harlem, he’s also hoping to draw attention to the fact that it’s in dire need of affordable, healthy food options. Check out the clip below for more on how Samuelsson is preaching “eating with a spiritual compass.”
